Hey all— my sweet friend Iris (who you may know as @punishedyke) recently lost her home. Things are just really precarious for her right now, and it would be good for her to have an emergency fund and money to afford a few small comforts. If you have anything to spare please send it her way.
UPDATE: her Venmo got flagged (🙃) but her ko-fi works!!!

Predictions for Dungeons & Dragons under Hasbro's management in the coming years:
Uma Musume style horsegirls introduced to the Forgotten Realms; setting's lore revised so that they've always been there.
Advancement rules now stipulate per-session XP bonus based on lifetime D&D Beyond purchase history.
Compendium of exclusive feat trees for specific gender and sexual identities. Bisexuality receives no feats of its own, being mechanically implemented as "half gay"; the resulting synergies are disgusting.
Editorial error in revised Dungeon Master's Guide accidentally refers to Dungeon Masters as Hasbro's employees.
"Noble savage" coding of barbarian class walked back, refocused on European folkloric touchstones such as the Ulster Cycle; all barbarian characters become Irish stereotypes.
AI-based DM service trained exclusively on work of Ed Greenwood launched; withdrawn a week later citing "guiderail issues".
Expanded discussion of navigating player expectations frames "not showing up at all" as a valid playstyle.
Dragon-blooded sorcerer subclass revised to state that one of the character's ancestors was "very good friends" with a dragon.
One thing that makes me kinda sad is seeing people who feel like TTRPGs just aren't for them because they bounced off of some element that is clearly just a symptom of them trying out D&D5e. Like people who have had a hard time with learning the rules would probably do well with any system where the rule formatting and play culture around learning them aren't a mess. One friend of mine didn't like waiting a long time for turns to come up in combat, not even knowing that many games don't even use a turn-based structure.
A lot of D&D5e defenders on here like to claim that asking someone to learn a new system is "gatekeeping" somehow, but I'd argue that acting like one game is emblematic of the entire medium to the exclusion of people who don't click with that one game is way more meaningfully a form of gatekeeping, even if it's fully unintentional.
I strongly believe that not all RPGs are gonna appeal to everyone, but there is an RPG out there for everyone, and I just hope that people who haven't clicked with the most common option to be introduced to can find something that works for them.
You're right and you should say it.
Hasbro is fucking lying.
Their game does one very specific thing in an extremely specific way, and are exploiting unpaid game designers to sell the illusion otherwise.
There are other games. Hasbro is just gatekeeping the entire medium.
What are some better systems? I only know D&D5E but I’m wide open to learn. Is Pathfinder better? What else is out there?
So I'd say that my answer to that question is gonna depend on a few things. There are a lot of TTRPGs out there, and I'd personally say that I like quite a lot of them better than d&d5e, but the games that appeal to you might be completely different.
Overall, what are the things about d&d5e as written that you'd say that you like, and the things that you dislike or often find yourself changing? And what are some general genres of story you'd like to try playing out at the table?
So I just like the role play honestly. I like being in a fantasy world and doing fantasy things. I enjoy a fantasy plot setting, questing across some improbable universe for whatever macguffin we’re chasing.
I would say that I find a lot of the deep rules aggravating. I would rather narrate combat organically than calculate movements and actions and such. Rules are necessary for sure but I think there is a point where there are far too many rules to manage. In the D&D games I’ve been involved in we usually ignore half of the rules anyway.
In terms of story arc, I like a lot of the classic tropes: hunting for a lost magical item, chasing the Big Bad Guy down, dealing with cults or warlords, and so on. I’m not into TTRPG romances or royalty-oriented stories in general. I sort of like the small group on the improbable quest.
I have some experience with VTM as well, but I didn’t quite enjoy that one as much because the group I was with sort of crossed from TTRPG to LARPing which I am not personally into.
So that's not a field of games that I'm an expert in, but what you're describing sounds a bit like it could fit with Critical Role's Daggerheart system! It's got a general focus on tools for narrative construction and combat that's relatively seamless with the rest of the story.
Dungeon World is a spin on the classic fantasy adventure setting that uses the popular rules-lite Powered by the Apocalypse game engine. A different system that uses DW as a base, Stonetop, has been getting some attention lately for it's unique and interesting spin on the fantasy genre.
Spire the City Must Fall is a pretty cool, subversive take on a lot of the usual fantasy setting political dynamics and it's sister game Heart: The City Beneath presents a very cool narratively-constructed spin on the concept of a doomed dungeon crawl journey.
Finally, I will note that if you aren't enjoying d&d combat, that might be because you don't like ttrpg combat in general, but it also might be because you don't enjoy d&d's specific approach to combat. Pathfinder does have a pretty crunchy combat system that a lot of people do find more satisfying than d&d's, but I'm personally more partial to Draw Steel's approach to tactical fantasy combat that moves fast and lets every turn feel a bit more impactful and varied.
Other people do probably know the genre better than I do here, so if anyone has suggestions please feel free to add them on!
Embarrassed myself a few days ago and since then I've been periodically going like this

Gundam fans will be like “Bandai we need an MG of this Mobile Suit!!” and the suit will be called “Pēnits Kùmmer” and have appeared in one panel of a side manga that’s never been translated from Japanese. Then you look up Pēnits Kùmmer and it’s like the sickest fucking mecha design you’ve ever seen

I write this post with a heart filled with both pain and hope. I live in the Gaza Strip, where the simple details of daily life have turned into a real battle for survival.
The situation here has become unbearable: Food crisis: We are suffering from a severe shortage of food and clean water. Food contamination: Due to displacement and destruction, rodents and insects attack what little food we have left, rendering it contaminated and unfit for human consumption, but we sometimes find ourselves with no other options. Health situation: The lack of hygiene and the spread of pests threaten us with diseases and epidemics every day. Insecurity: We live in constant fear and lack the most basic necessities of human life.
I desperately need your support to provide clean food and water for my family. Any donation, no matter how small, will make a huge difference in saving my life and the lives of my family. Please share this post so it reaches as many kind hearts as possible. Please don't let me down. All I ask of you is to get food for my family. Donate 💔😭

No one has donated to me yet. We need 200 euros so I can buy food for my family. All I'm asking for is food. I swear, just food to survive. Please don't let me down. Please donate. I don't want us to die of hunger. Please donate so we can buy food for my family today. 💔😭
Why are you letting us down? I've only received $10, I still need $190. Are you waiting for us to starve to death? 😭😭🥺 I haven't eaten anything but a piece of bread since this morning. My stomach is aching from hunger.
Please donate.
Bolivians are 4 weeks into a general strike which has seen them shut down highways across the country, with union members manning the barricades. And now workers have seized control of an oil field in Santa Cruz, shutting down production. if you're wondering why 24 hour strikes and week long consumer boycotts don't achieve anything, it's because they don't put any actual pressure on capital. the Bolivians are showing us how to inflict sustained losses on business. it's still a long way from taking political control out of the hands of capitalists and putting into the workers, but it's how you actually operate if you want to win concessions. in fact, their state has already offered concessions but the workers and peasants are demanding more
