you know that trope where it’s princess + knight, but they’ve both been captured by the bad guys and the princess is now gripped by the jaw by the villain, receiving a thin cut to her cheek while remaining completely still with a defiant look in her eyes even as a droplet of blood begins to trickle out of the wound, all while 3 people AT THE VERY LEAST need to have their hands locked on the knight because he’s thrashing around like a wild animal, trying so so so desperately, violently, to get to her?
yeah, that’s porn to me.

hello jack aubrey enjoyers
a series of 2ha side character's portraits! (ft. young chu wanning and zombie taxian-jun)
What seemed to enrage a former inmate most was the mutual consent of the men he lived with.
Well wonderful tumblr ate my associated text explaining why this article is so interesting. This article describes a letter from a former prisoner of a Prison Hulk from 1842, which not only reports about life on board but also about same-sex marriages. That there were homosexual acts, but also about a social construct that already existed with the pirates, namely the matelotage.
A structure similar to marriage, which at its core is only about caring for each other and is not accompanied by the physical act. Whereby the one does not exclude the other. It seems that at that time, at least on board this hulk, it was normal and apparently accepted. The only question is to what extent it was accepted.
Because that would shed a whole new light on the social coexistence within close-knit same-sex structures such as on ships and would certainly shed new light on some of the court rulings regarding homosexuality on board. For not all the accused have always been sentenced to death.

I finished Warships of the Great Lakes 1754-1834 by Robert Malcomson tonight, and it has to be one of the most difficult books I've read—I mean it was physically difficult to read it, as a larger hardcover book with reflective glossy pages that were dreadful to read with a booklight.
That aside, it was so-so. It's chock full of ship drafts, which have always been my least favorite thing to find in the NMM online collection when I want a cool ship picture, not boat blueprints. Malcomson is a Canadian naval historian and the War of 1812 is the meat of the book, but it's light on human interest stories and anecdotes (they might get in the way of boat stats). Oddly, he admires Isaac Chauncey and perceives him as efficient and competent—definitely not the opinion of a few other historians I've read.
Modern-day Lake freighters are renowned for their long lifespans, preserved from the corrosive effects of saltwater, so it was a bizarre twist to read about fresh water having the opposite effect on wooden vessels. Salt inhibits fungus and mold, and wooden ships on the Lakes disintegrated within a decade. Many vessels were packed with salt within their frames in an attempt to preserve them; literally pickling a ship.
I was also surprised by the loosey-goosey renaming of multiple ships that changed hands, through new owners or as prizes of war. Did everyone decide to forgo the traditional taboos about renaming ships, due to being on a lake (or whatever)?? I suppose when your ship decays at top speed in fresh water you worry a lot less about angering Poseidon.
my predicament
I just want to go to the market or see a local band perform,
are all of you rich river boat owning fucks now????
people don't usually have a private train
the nearest bus stop is 3 miles away as the crow flys, next to a costco and a hospital
The number of people who just can't comprehend the reality of travel in rural America is... kind of staggering.
I grew up in The Woods. There was absolutely no form of public transportation aside from the literal school bus. If you wanted to go anywhere besides school (10 miles from my house), you had to drive a car or ride your bike on unpaved, bumpy dirt roads. The center of town (a 2 mile walk) held the library, some churches, town hall, the village store, and the beach for the local lake. And I must've clocked thousands of biking miles just to go to the library, the village store for a snack, and the beach as a kid. Because I could go literally nowhere else.
The closest City Where Stuff Happens was 15 miles away. It might as well have been on the moon before I got a driver's license and begged to borrow my brother's car.
Trust me: people who live in places like this are aware of every single option for traveling. Car ownership is expensive (and unattainable for some), but it's one of the few escapes from these metaphorical desert islands across rural America.
It doesn't even have to be that rural. I lived in a town 15 miles outside the state capital and had no way to get there until i got a car. It was all highways and we had no intercity public transit.
America is not built for people its built for cars
They. They forgor
They were opened in AUGUST 2001. Oh my god. That's both hilarious and tragic.

i don't think i'll ever forget when the boys' PE teacher so casually prompted me to join the other lads. there were no bells and whistles or some big grand gesture making a massive deal. he tret me like he would any other young lad. school was rough for me (like with most queer kids), so moments like these really shine. cheers, sir 🫡
