Can you explain how med school and residency work in the UK? I'm a Family Medicine resident in the US, and the terminology is a bit different. I'm guessing F1 is the same as our PGY-1 (post-grad year 1). Also do you guys go straight to med school after high school? Is it longer than ours as a result?
Our med school is a bit longer, but really what is much longer is our training after we graduate.
Our med schools are undergrad courses (straight form school). The standard course length for medicine is 5 years, but it can be 6 if you choose to do an intercalated degree, in which you take a year to do something else. That’s quite popular; some med schols make all their students do it, whilst others allow opting in/out. There are a few graduate entry courses that squish the first 2 years into 1, and teach medicine in 4 years, but they are pretty intense.
1) FY1 = first year after med school graduation. You’re provisionally registered with the GMC. A real doctor but a baby doctor. You can’t discharge patients yourself without a grownup doctor saying you can.
2) FY2. You’re stil a ‘foundation doctor’ but you get a bit more independence. after this point you apply for specialty training and it all gets kind of …squiggly.
3) Most hospital medical specialties require you to do two years of core medical training. You would be a CMT1, then CMT2. If you need more time to complete your competencies you might even be a CMT3. THIS is currently changing, and in a couple of years time, CMT might be 3 years for everyone. Emergency medicine and ITU trainees get 3 years of training called ACCS.
4) Most hospital surgical specialties require you to do two years of core medical training after FY2. Yuo would be a CST1, then CST2. If you need more time to complete your competencies you might even be a CST3.
5) For other specialties like psych, O&G, paeds, you go into specialty training in that specialty only, straight off the bat. You’ll still be an SHO (junior resident in your terms) for the first 2-3 years of that, but you’ll just be an ST 1, ST2, ST3 (specialty trainee)
6) after those years yo becoe a registrar, a middle grade doctor (senior resident) starting at training year ST3 or ST4. This stands for specialty trainee, because even if you were taking a general path, you pick your specialty at this point. Different specialties have different lengths of training; it’s not unheard of to have ST7, ST8, even ST9. ST7 is the most common. That means becoming a consultnat 9 years after leaving medical school.
7) A GP would do 3 years of training after FY2 before completing all training. For hospital specialties it’s quite bit longer as mentioned above.
