Hot Takes: Black Panther 1 Edition
About Me: I am a Black American Woman who was born in Nigerian before my family immigrated who has written 60+ fanfic for BP and has an entire worldbuilding document: here. I unfortunately take this shit too seriously.
Now lets get started:
Making Xhosa a stand-in for Wakandan was lazy world building especially considering the inconsistencies in the canon about Wakandaās location.
Why I think that: A supposed isolated country which has been isolated for centuries and especially prides itself from being set apart from the world WOULD NOT speak legible Xhosa. Language drift etc. Also everybody's Xhosa was terrible. ALSO their "AFRICAN" ACCENTS.
There would also be more dialects amongst the population.
(And before you say anything I know why Coogler did that)
At the very least just let them speak in english and add subtitles to indicate when they *are* speaking in english and when viewer should know that they aren't (Cause why would an African nation isolated since chattel slavery have many ppl who spoke english????????)
TāChalla interrupting Nakiaās mission the way he did was mad disrespectful and the canon kind of dismisses her politic of having a responsibility to marginalized people.
I didnāt consider her situation with TāChalla particularly romantic either. Smelled like condescension which canonically Nakia probably got a lot of from her non war dog peers.
Shuriās connection/knowledge of Black American jokes/isms is a bit weird for an African character who allegedly doesnāt live in a country that would prioritize America.
Sheās also supposed to be a ridiculously Op scientist who is dedicated to her craft and in theory wouldnāt have that much time to troll the WESTERN internet like that. Not saying itās impossible just saying it makes Shuri weird.
I know Donald Glover thought those jokes were funny but I was a little puzzled. They could have used common African jokes or something... but then BP 1 doesn't really give a fuck about it's African audience..........
For a movie about fictional Africans it sure didnāt let many Africans have important rolesā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ (and no i don't count black brits)
TāChallaās first fight with Killmonger was incredibly underwhelming and inconsistent with his fighting style we see in Civil War.
Especially since we saw him given every white man and woman the business.
Him having trouble with Lord MāBaku makes sense if we take Wakandan and Jabariās longstanding martial nature seriously.
We could also say he never actually beat Killmonger in a fair fight. Particularly interesting because TāChalla had the heart shaped herb for years and Killmonger had that shit for 30 seconds and no time to learn all the tricks.
MBJ was not a good Killmonger (See here)
Killmonger should have lived and it was particularly telling that the canon makes it explicit that revolutionaries and black radicals have no place in building a better future for black ppl.
At the very least throw him in a stasis pod or something to unfreeze some day lmao. Or is that only reserved for Ross and Bucky?
The movie acts like Killmonger isnāt African. The canon implies from the first words of the film that NāJobu imparted his son with knowledge of his roots, a Wakandan name, and reinforced his identity as a Wakandan.
The fact that TāChaka or T'Challa didnāt respect that doesnāt change this.
Fuck Zuri even he didn't care for N'Jobu he should had some compassion for his son.
Similarly the movie positions Killmonger as this outsider without a legitimate claim.
Particularly amusing since Wakanda apparently thinks deciding your monarch through martial prowess is the best and most traditional way to do things.
Also funny because TāChalla and the Dora and Nakia and Shuri did a coup at the end. The reason no one cares is is
1. They hate Killmonger 2. Plot armor made Killmonger not slit TāChallaās throat or have someone get the body.
(Which IS VERY ODD FOR A MAN WHO HAS KILLED A TON OF PPL AS HIS PROFESSION) Confirm the kill lol. And burn the body too if thatās what you want.
The canon implies he just didn't want them to have a body to bury the way they disrespected N'Jobu but with most of Wakanda respecting his claim it shouldn't have been that hard to desecrate T'Challa's dead body.
Lastly Coogler fans that can't take critique and non-blacks who can't name 5 Wakandans not in the MCU movie, Do Not Interact. Thank you
Finally, accurate depiction of Everett Ross.
I will never not love and care for NāJadaka. He is an African child. He has roots in Black american and Wakandan culture. You canāt divorce his identity as one or the other. The first lines of Black Panther is LITERALLY ābaba tell me a story of homeā (Brb while i sob)
