they meet after jeff stabs nina. nina went to liu, dripping in blood. she told him he cant call 911 because "youre the only person i could get to youre the only one i knew would be here youre the only one who can help me please jeff did this please you cant call 911 he'll get in trouble" nonsense. so liu called jane, who was familiar with the proxies via sally - so jane and liu bring nina to Jack to get stitched up w/o getting authorities involved.

toby shows up shortly after, worried for Nina. but toby is also really annoying, and the only person he doesnt know in that cabin would be liu -- so immediate interrogation there. "who the fuck are you, whyre you with nina, why the hell is she bleeding, why are your hands bloody, whats with those stupid scars" since they're, you know, the all-too-known smile.

liu is already frantic. the blood, weird environment, ninas unstable condition, and tobys freaky ass on his case would draw him towards a panic attack. someone, probably jane, would have to step in.

jane would be lightly scolding toby. liu goes out for a cigarette, needing to soothe his nerves.

once ninas condition is stable and toby gets a bit more clarification from jane and her, he'd settle down. maybe be the one to swing open the door and gesture for liu to come back in. he's not one to apologize, especially not to another man, but yk...

this is where i start diverging from my AUs canon for the sake of the ship LOL

but toby likes people who really care. he's drawn to passion, protection, strength. and liu makes it clear he cares for nina and would carry her bleeding out through a forest, getting his own hands dirty, just to save her life. ...lius not strong but tobys got an image of him in his head now, esp with the scars, lius height, stature, the blood all over him.

anyhow. now lius got tobys attention. and even after this whole situation is wrapped up, tobys inquiring abt liu. "nina wheres that guy at these days" "does he live in town or what" "how did you meet him anyway" "whys he know jane?" "is he your new boyfriend of the week, or.." etc etc.

i could see toby developing a curious crush, but instead of saying that to nina, he starts pestering HER about "so youre into him huh" . and ninas irritated by it. resulting in further "teasing" from toby.

eventually ninas like "dude shut the fuck up hes gay oh my god" and now tobys like Oh. GOD BLESS HOMOSEXUALITY

joking but that would just result in liu haunting him more LMAO... anyhow, eventually, his pestering eventually gets nina to invite liu out to a creepject hangout.

toby falls first, then - and harder. liu is very very very scared of romance after his fiance left him. their dynamic is very much toby pressing, liu being nervous, toby wanting to push buttons, liu stressing further, toby doing something genuinely good, liu starting to let his walls down, so on and so forth.
