I'd be really interested in a past DM reveal that isn't a confession from Armand, but is instead because Daniel goes investigative reporter mode on himself? After learning that Armand has always been there, it scratches something in his brain and he goes searching for his own proof in his own life. Looking for Armand in the background of photos, news reports of mysterious deaths near places he's lived. Finding these little scraps of this other person he never even knew was in his life, proof that Armand was telling the truth. And when he searches back far enough into the blackout days, the period of his life he himself knows the least about, among the old rent records and invoices and half remembered rehab stints he finds something else: a photo of a young couple, dancing without a care in the world in a Miami bar. And he has a complete breakdown realising the depths of what he doesn't know about his own life, and what Armand took from him

I have a question about Devil's Minion. I've seen quite a few people say that their relationship isn't romantic but purely toxic, and that because of that we shouldn't expect any real love between them in the show. (I've never read the books.) That's why i'm a bit confused, because on Tumblr i often see people saying the exact opposite. There are now two things i'm struggling to understand. First of all, Lestat and Louis aren't exactly in a healthy relationship either, yet everyone still talks about the love between them. And we're talking about vampires here, after all. It seems pretty obvious that toxic elements come with the territory. Maybe you can tell me what to expect
Hi Nonny, thanks for asking!
Book Devil’s Minion is very toxic AND very romantic. It's a peak gothic romance. To say it's only one of the two would be downright ridiculous (especially if it's being said to somehow pit DM against Loustat, which is also both).
I've written another post about the romance, toxicity and appeal of book DM recently. I suggest you read that first, because it contains a somewhat concise summary of their book timeline.
I'll put the super long answer to your ask and some excerpts from the DM chapter under the break, so beware of QotD book spoilers.
I want to start off by saying something you might already know, but the big difference between book DM and show DM is that there is no sexy vampire Bourdain version of Daniel in the book. Armand turns book!Daniel in 1985, when Daniel is in his thirties.
All of Armand and Daniel’s relationships in the Devil’s Minion chapter takes place between the one and only interview Daniel does with Louis, in 1973 and the present-day events of TVL and QotD, which take place in 1985.
I am a past DM truther, which means I think pretty much all of the DM chapter has already happened, but Daniel doesn’t remember because Armand erased their relationship from his mind.
What I expect from the show is Daniel regaining his memories of their time together (with LBF coming back for S4) and falling (back) in love with Armand in the present day (though not necessarily in that order).
I've also written a very long post about how this theory still survives after ep5, despite much dooming from the fandom.
Below I'm highlighting some of the most iconic and most romantic parts of the DM chapter, though the whole thing is a banger and many people will have different favourite parts.
The DM chapter is largely a self-contained little intermezzo in QotD, and I recommend reading it in its entirety. It will blow your mind. (Though the parts about the redheaded twins at the start will be confusing if you haven't read the rest of QotD.)
If you're interested in reading it, This may or may not be a pdf of the full book (DM starts on page 57, though they have more sections throughout the rest of the book).
I'm pulling these from the chapter in the order they appear in, but it's important to note that the chapter is told non-linearly, starting in the present day, then going back to their first meeting and back up to the present day.
I Am the Devil’s Minion
The name Devil’s Minion comes from Daniel himself. It's important to note that 'minion' is very much a misnomer. Daniel does zero minioning; he is the Devil’s Sugar Baby.
There Is Nothing For You Now, Except Me
At the start of the chapter, Daniel has been apart from Armand for months. He'll run off because he gets mad at Armand for not making him a vampire. Then he'll slowly lose his mind, stop taking care of himself, beg Armand to take him back, then yell at him for driving him mad.
Toxic AF, romantic AF.
Night Island
"What's this Night Island business?" you ask. "Wasn't AMC going to make a Night Island series? Yes, they were, and they've recently mentioned that it has not been scrapped and is possibly still coming. They were meant to start filming in 2023 but that just quietly fizzled out, potentially because they realised you can't do a Night Island show without Armand and Daniel, because they own it.
Technically it's in Daniel’s name, because Armand doesn't exist on paper, but Armand builds it for Daniel. My dear friend @hummingbee-o0o has likened it to a vampiric Taj Mahal (in one of their fics) in that Armand built it for his beloved.
I'm skipping ahead a little for the next quote.
After they get together, DM spend a lot of time travelling. Until Armand is ready to settle down, which leads to my favourite "old married couple moment" of theirs with Daniel acting like a put-upon sitcom husband (highlighted in green), immediately followed by another iconic fan-favourite quote (yellow).
But Armand doesn’t steal another car and be done with it. He very quickly acquires million and buys them an island filled with stores, restaurants and movie theaters that only open at night, which quickly becomes a very popular and exclusive holiday destination for humans (Armand and Daniel have their own favourite villa there).
Ordering the Entire Menu + Immortal Idiot
Back to DM's beginnings for a minute. After Daniel interviews Louis, Daniel - being every bit the fool that show!Daniel is in S2E5 - goes searching for Lestat hoping Lestat will turn him. He finds then unholy family's NOLA townhouse and in it...Armand. Armand keeps him locked up there for a while, as one does (this is S2E5 in the show), then tells him to run and that he won't kill Daniel as long as he stays interesting. Daniel, terrified, runs, and Armand immediately catches up with him again. So Daniel runs some more.
They keep this up for years, but the way they interact slowly changes.
Notice how Daniel isn't afraid of Armand anymore. He says "let's get out of here" - he wants to leave the restaurant but doesn't necessarily want Armand to leave. He is seduced by Armand’s laughter. He's *annoyed* at being woken up for a dumb phone demonstration, surprises Armand by pushing back, then immediately gives Armand what he asks for.
Also notice just how DENSE this chapter is. These - and especially the immortal idiot exchange - are scenes every book DM fan knows and loves, and they're described literally back-to-back.
You're Mine, Beautiful Boy OR The Least Subtle Blow Job Metaphor In Recent History
Eventually, Daniel even starts to miss Armand when he stays away too long. About four years into their chase, Daniel has been in Italy the entire summer and Armand hasn't shown up once. Which is fine, mostly.
So yeah, church wedding for show!Loustat, vampire blowjob for book!DM.
They get up to loads of fun shenanigans in the years between this scene and Daniel becoming a vampire, and say many more romantic things, but you'll have to read those for yourself because I've been working on this post for an hour and a half. 🤣
But, yeah...
Anyone who claims DM wasn't romantic in the books is absolutely full of shit.

armand was really like you’ve been calling me daddy an awful lot lately so anyway have you heard that lestat is fucking his mother. and that’s something vampires can do. I’m ready to teach you vampirism now btw. groomed squad fr…
I think it's funny how the marketing for tvl was like "the music is awesome! Rock star lestat" and then the first episode everyone, including lestat, is like "this shit is middling to bad"

When you start viewing Armand like a teenager (as Assad said we should) literally everything he’s ever done makes sense. That’s why his decisions are so bad and he’s so impulsive.
He’s 517, but physically he’s 27 (but he’s also possibly physically younger than that and doesn’t remember) but mentally, he’s still that teenager Marius bought from the brothel. Sometimes you look at him and how he’s acting and he’s just so Amadeo. That’s why he often looks like a kid playing dress up in his dad’s clothes and why his mood changes so quickly. The abuse froze him as a kid even after he entered adulthood and then vampirism froze all that trauma and trapped him there forever. He never really left Venice. He never really will.
