Spectacular news! I FINALLY got my hands on Killjoys National Anthem and I'm SO HYPED! I love Danger Days with all my soul and I have been wanting this comic for ages and finally had some extra time and cash to grab a copy. I'm not done reading it yet but can I just say, art style? Delicious. Coloring? Spectacular. Quality of the comic book itself? Wonderful. 10/10. There's no 'buts' here. Just go buy the comic. Its so good and I love it. Keep running Killjoys :D
Now for not spectacular news.
Did you know that ICE and The National Guard raided MacArthur park in Los Angeles on July 7th? Let me absolutely clear here, the US military raided a public park. Are we all just going to sit here and pretend that this is okay?
Because while I think ICE by themselves is already horrific in their actions, and that just them alone raiding a public park is a horrendous violation. That it is taking advantage of a place that has always throughout history and the world been a place of connection and a common area for children and families, some of the most vulnerable among us, to frequent. But lets ignore my opinions on ICE for a moment and look at the National Guard. Lets look at the facts.
The fact that there were 90 National Guard confirmed to be present at this ICE RAID
The fact that there was over a dozen military vehicles and soldiers on horseback
The fact that people were told to leave the park at gun point
The fact that apparently the military was there to protect ICE
I raise the questions, who were the military protecting the ICE officers from, and how were they planning on enacting this protection? Because from where I'm sitting all I can see is a bunch of military, in a non-military operation, supposedly protecting the ICE agents that from what we've seen are also often armed, from... civilians? Because who else could it be?
Sorry if it seems like I'm jumping to conclusions here but all of this is sounding like a perfect opportunity for the US military to fire on civilians.
I don't want to create senseless fear, but I think if we refuse to talk about the possibility we are doing ourselves a huge disservice.
We can't just ignore that the military raided a public park. We can't just ignore that people are hiding in their homes. We can't just ignore the implications, historical and otherwise.
Thank god that the park was virtually empty, but the reason that park was empty was because this sort of thing is becoming a normalized threat. People are avoiding public places because of this exact thing happening, so we can't stop talking about it. We have a responsibility to call this shit out. Because it's real. It's getting worse. And we need to understand both current and growing risks if we want a chance at stopping any of this.
