in my fantasy world turned sci-fi steampunk, advances in dungeoneering technology have enabled past portions of the population to specialise into jobs like senior sprocket analyst and zeppelin dynamics consultant and whatnot. everybody still pines for idealised halcyon days of pre-industrial dungeoneering where you could still get poisoned by a basilisk and die on floor 2. 95% of the actual dungeoneering still going on is just done by immigrant guys being paid minimum wage to spawncamp slimes
its so humiliating to like shapes sometimes. someone will say "what have you up to today." and i have no answer except sending images like this.
and then i have to explain that no actually, ive never dropped acid this is just how i am.
for the record:
row 1: ongoing experiment in analog procedural generation of street-map-like patterns based on tilings of kisrhombille polyforms
row 2: layout ideas for a hypothetical basketball card game inspired by the resonant orbits of the gallilean moons of jupiter
row 3: byproduct of failed attempt to design a 2d "print-and-play" net of a fair and balanced hypercubic die with 24 faces

A Brief Look at the Major (and Minor) Post-Crisis States of 2069
New Englanders: “We have successfully put aside our petty regional differences to unite against our common enemy: Mainers.”
Tidewater: “the continued existence of anyone who isn’t exactly like us is a never-ending indignity that we all must endure. Also, we’re not responsible for Philadelphia.”
Piedmont: “Yes, there was a race war. Yes, the white side lost. Yes, we live with the constant simmering fear that we’re going to glance over our shoulder and see tanks rolling over the hills for round two. But other than that things are pretty okay.”
Free New York: “Grunst the Rat-King is polling remarkably well among the 18 to 34 sewer-dwelling demographic. Also, we’re not responsible for Philadelphia.”
Great Lakes Republic: “The fact that we’re a large nation with porous borders and a dozen mid-sized cities rather than one really big city means that we’re kind of like America’s Germany, which is an awesome historical comparison with no unfortunate implications. Chicago? No, Chicago is its own thing.”
Chicago: “You must bow before the Lightfoot Daimyo before we will speak with you.”
Philadelphia: “You might be thinking ‘wow, look at this burning, toxic, post-industrial hellscape, the Polycrisis must have really hit this place hard’ but that’s just what Philly’s always looked like baybee! FUCK YOU!”
Front Range: “our desire to recolonize more land is hindered by how that land is, unfortunately, Wyoming.”
Greater Texas: “The oil wells may have dried up, global warming may have ruined our farms and ranches, but at times like this we need to remember what’s really important: Muslims have taken over the goldam moon.”
Philadelphia: *pelts you with batteries*
Cascadia: “maybe we could finally throw off the yoke of Californian oppression if we could go five minutes without puppygirls hacking our government servers.”
California: “Honestly we didn’t even need to join the Usonian Union, we’d be totally fine on our own, we just joined because we felt sorry for Sunny Roosevelt, we figured she ought to have someone who could class the place up and show her - don’t look under that sheet. It’s nothing, don’t worry about it, just - I SAID DON’T”
Part 2: The Ones that Aren’t in the Usonian Union
The Kingdom of Acadiana-Orleans: “if you’re surprised that Louisiana went full on neo-feudal at the first opportunity, you really haven’t been paying attention.”
Očhéthi Šakówiŋ: “so the Bureau of Indian Affairs is dead and nobody cares even a little bit what happens in the Dakotas? Well, don’t mind if we do! After all, nobody else is living here so we can just take whatever we want, right?”
Disneystadt: “After meditating for three days in the sacred Hall of Presidents, the oracle will emerge with predictions for the fall harvest. She will also take enough ketamine to drop a rhino during this process, though I feel like that was implied.”
The Appalachian Khanate: “Oh so we spent decades learning horse archery but now suddenly everyone wants to ‘go back to normal’ and ‘stop being the sworn enemy of all who dwell within walls.’ Foller yer own lights.”
Midwest Autonomous Region: “You might be thinking ‘wow, look at this desolate and god-forsaken landscape devoid of life, the Polycrisis must have hit this place really hard’ but that’s just what Nebraska’s always looked like.”
Addendum: The Southwest
Sun Corridor Federation: “Yeah, it sucks that the local sheriff has jus primae noctis over the whole neighborhood but sometimes that’s just the price you pay for a house with a pool.”
New Deseret: "We're doing great! Everything's great :) the Polycrisis was an opportunity in disguise, a chance for us to build the city on the hill and spread the glory of the true faith of Mormonism by creating a society of brotherly love and freedom from poverty. :) Have a fruit basket as a welcoming gift. :) Come, stay a while. At least stick around for the weekly public flogging of sinners. :) Would you like another fruit basket? :)”
Navajo Nation: "The future sucks man, skin-walkers are on LinkedIn now. I swear I just saw one shilling a new crypto scam.”
Las Vegas: (was annihilated in 205X when The Sphere gained sentience)
El Norte: "Podrías pensar 'Guau, no hay siñales de civilización y el clima intenta matarme por cada manera posible, el Polycrisis debe haber roto este lugar totalmente,’ pero siempre ha sido así."

The Glorious Empire of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints: “having finally purged all the unbelievers, gays, feminists, and coffee-drinkers opposed to the True Church from our great land, the duty the Lord has laid upon us now is to take up a New Crusade and recapture the Holy Land of Missouri.”
The Desert Palisades: “the main job opportunities are cattle rancher or cattle rustler, and the main form of entertainment is shootouts! Every ranch is a sovereign and highly armed nation unto itself! At last, true freedom!”
Greater Dinétah: “so the Bureau of Indian Affairs is dead and nobody cares even a little bit what happens in Arizona? Well, don’t mind if we do! After all, nobody else is living here so we can just take whatever we want, right?”
Hopitutskwa: “(war of secession from Greater Dinétah intensifies)”

The OSR movement may have its issues, but ultimately we've got to reckon with the fact that, to a large extent, it's merely reacting to the broader indie tabletop roleplaying sphere's tendency to lose sight of why many people take up the hobby in the first place: for a safe and budget-friendly way to satisfy the natural human impulse to put one's friends in some kind of fucked up labyrinth.
The existence of a very large number of massive carnivores in the setting is explained by the presence of a species of wild pigs with a reproductive rate comparable to rodents, having a litter of up to twenty piglets every month and being able to breed at six months old, ensuring that the population of megafaunal predators and fantasy monsters and giants and dragons and whatnot have no shortage of fresh meat, and in fact are essential to the balance of the world to avoid it being overwhelmed by hordes of hogs.

The Questing Beast is really just the tip of the iceberg. Arthurian Legend is very high fantasy when know where to look.
TTRPG fodder, surely.

I recently discovered that One Page Rules, the company that's making wargames that are heavily inspired by Warhammer/40k but legally distinct so people have a way to play games using their minis without using GW's rules, have also made "Quest" versions of their flagship products, Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy, which are sort of like RPGified skirmish wargames. Like, they still conform to the rules of their respective gamelines but the assumption is that each player only controls a single model and the players cooperate to put their party of heroes against AI-controlled guys (the game has simple rules for running non-player figures with a simple script).
Anyway it's pretty neat imo! Very much in that "approaching TTRPGs from the direction of wargames" vein like Bladestorm 2e.
In Prince's funky name, amen.
Millennial here. All the above and:
Please send me the training or tutorial in a written format with maybe some screenshots if necessary. I don't want a video tutorial. I don't want to waste time trying to scroll to the exact moment in the instructions that I need and then have to pause and replay it because I missed the .01 seconds of actually relevant information.
Please. Text. Maybe some images for clarification. I can read. I promise.
Skimmable, SEARCHABLE instructions. If they're long, there should be a hyperlinked table of contents.

If you really need to show a movement, embed a gif or 15-scond-or-less video in the text, like Jod intended.
Something I ran into during my time working at the university library. They wanted me to take over a particular task for the coming semester, and I needed to be trained on the software we used for it. This training was being done primarily by having Teams meetings with the software rep and other employees who had experience with the software. Early in the process, I asked for a copy of the manual.
There wasn’t one. The software rep swore up & down that there was no written documentation at all. They had “webinars”, which they thought were more than sufficient, and the rep insisted nobody had asked for a text version before. I asked them to double-check; okay, fine, your public-facing documentation has all pivoted to video, but surely a manual exists. Y’all made this software, someone must have written down how it worked at one point.
At our next meeting, they told me they’d looked into it & indeed no manual had ever been written. They insisted that all documentation on how to use the software had been recorded in video form & nowhere else.
Flabbergasted. Who decided software documentation & training should rely on the oral tradition? This company is clearly insane. And then this came up again with another piece of software from a different company. The art of the technical manual has apparently died a quiet death at some point with few people noticing, and now How To Use Computer is passed down from senior employee to junior employee like we’re apprentice blacksmiths in the 1600s.
At a previous university at which I worked, there was a major renovation on one floor and a tonne of stuff got junked. I, of course, like any broke grad student, dedicated an afternoon to dumpster diving through the tonnes of perfectly good office supplies they were throwing out in the name of 'modernizing'.
My favourite find from that particular afternoon was a big yellow three-ring binder that said 'Emergency Procedures' in big text on the front and spine. I of course took it to use for D&D statblocks and stuff.
But it occurs to me now that this implies the emergency procedures are no longer stored in a Large and Obvious Yellow Binder and instead (presumably) buried a few files deep in on a hard drive somewhere. And in an actual emergency situation, I don't think that would be better.
