It's been just over a year since Deltarune chapters 3 & 4 released! I did the 3D work, which mostly means Tenna πΊ I figured it's been long enough to share some "behind the scenes" stuff, starting with a look at the Maya file for his static poses...
I'd individually render the poses to get that early 3D shine β¨ Here's some of them at their original resolutions! I would work from text descriptions from Toby, and sometimes there'd be a Paint sketch to help out. Gigi drew the concept that I modeled from and some poses too!
I had a lot of fun pushing myself to match the dynamic poses Toby had in mind for Tenna - making him so crazy and expressive was something I couldn't have done without his prompts. He'd draw the faces on afterward too, which really brought Tenna to life!

There was a time when I was struggling to capture what he wanted for these specific Tenna poses⦠Until Toby acted them out himself, and I thought, "Ah, it's like that. I understand." and then I was able to make them just how he pictured them.
When looking through the renders and choosing what to share, I laughed at these two⦠Remember when Tenna had a gun? Remember when he bent over in a very specific way that might remind you of another, different image? No? Maybe you don't� Well. Don't worry about it.
These ones are cute⦠Tenna is pretty cute sometimes! Has anyone ever thought this? Actually, before people knew he was going to be a strange 3D sprite the Whole Time, I was worried people wouldn't like the style and it'd sour people's views on him. I'm glad that didn't happen.
Toby thought it would be funny to have Tenna do some really smooth, mocapped animations sometimes - specifically free to use ones that often pop up in other things. An extra funny part to me is how many frames these take up in the game, and how his tails are stuck to his legsβ¦
Speaking of mocap, Toby wanted Tenna to use custom mocap animations as far back as 2016 - Ten(na) years ago! I got an Xbox Kinect at the time and learnt how to set this up, but then never used it. Here's a look at messing with mocaped stuff again in 2022. So Normal.
Don't bother trying to help him here, he's just being dramatic π
I particularly like these poses - I think I improvised most of these just based off the context they get used in⦠I always liked posing his tie and coat tails as if they were also parts of his body he could move. Which I guess they are?
After I rendered out the individual poses in high quality, I'd force the color palette to be limited to just a few shades and then I'd shrink the result down to pixel sized sprites. Like these! I'd tidy them up a little, but they'd really get improved on at the pixel scale by Clairvoire.
As well as Tenna's sprites, I also worked on his intro "movie"β¦! Seeing people be completely overloaded by this on first playthroughs would always make me laugh. In game, there's a ton of extra editing done by Everdraed, but my unedited cut looks like this β¬οΈ
This was the entire storyboard I had to work from, and I'm realizing now that there's the note "put him in car etc" that I never did and actually don't know what it would mean exactly. Working on this had me listen to the accompanying audio many times, but it's good so it's okay.

For the 3D Ralsei clip from the intro, Toby really wanted it to look a certain way, and drew more sketches for guiding me with this part than any other. They genuinely helped.
Remember how Toby's original storyboard has the note "covered in slime and shrinks"? That meant I had to learn how to make 3D slime. You can see my tech advancing here.
I'm really happy with how the final Tenna animation at the end of the intro movie turned out! It wouldn't look as good if it wasn't for some 2D animation to reference from SmallBuStudio, so thank you to them for the help! Tenna is cute⦠Huh, I already said that�

I think if you understand TADC as a deeply personal and direct story centering on transness, emotional/self repression, the inner complexity of cruel people, ego, control, self-destructive tendencies, second chances, and what it means to live a meaningful life, all filtered through the core vision of one person, you'll find a raw expression of all those things, an experience being shared. You'll find a story that is consistent in its theme, subject matter, and quality throughout. Not something impossibly esoteric or flawlessly sophisticated, but a story that puts every piece it needs to into place. A story that completes itself, that says what it needs to and leaves a mark after it does.
Conversely, if you understand TADC as a story to take every single aspect, moment, outcome, and detail totally literally rather than in tandem with the thematic signficance it communicates. Or were looking for a more lore-driven story. Or were hoping for a more rounded exploration of its world and characters, a hollistic dive into the premise it sets up rather than a story barreling towards a specific end goal/a very pointed thematic stance. You're gonna end up disappointed with what you got.
And this is not a moral judgement, I don't think any expectation is at all more correct than another. I actually think my last point is probably even the most fair stance to have. Especially if you don't engage with any secondary material and just look at the show itself, since it doesn't totally establish Jax as a core focus until later in its run. Some storylines do feel very sidelined.
But if you view the show for what it was meant to be rather than what it was expected to be, I personally think it was rather beautiful. Not perfect, not the pinnacle of cinema, but as a trans woman, it was meaningful to me, dearly so. I feel like the standards its being held to aren't totally reasonable. I think it's a story that deserved to be told as it is, I think it's human.

Love your backrooms art ^^ What are your thoughts on Clark from the Backrooms? I would say heβs great NPD coded representation in my opinion, and I honestly felt bad for his character in the end. Clark is a nicely written character, but, opinions? >_<
Clark was my absolute favorite. he was such a good take on narcissistic tendencies and how they made the backrooms kinda reflect on how he thought was SO freaking cool.
he reminded me a lot of one of my other favorite nacissistic characters
In theory, the Eridian children have come to Grace and Simon's biodome to participate in a hands-on (clawtip-on?) physics experiment that doesn't translate well through a xenonite wall. In practice, its field trip day for the pebbles, and they are having an absolute blast exploring Grace and Simon's habitat in their teeny little xenonite envirosuits. They're picking up rocks, poking at the waves, and climbing every surface they can find. It's absolute chaos, and Grace is loving every second of it, but he's also a little bit anxious that some of the pebbles might hurt themselves. Thankfully he's not the only one keeping an eye on them. A couple of Eridian educators are there as well.
More importantly, however, Simon has apparently assigned himself as the pebbles' caretaker. He's following them around like a mother hen constantly watching over her chicks, nudging them out of the water before they can go too deep and helping them pick out the best rocks from the beach. Grace is enjoying watching Simon interact with his class; it's giving Simon a chance to unknowingly show off his gentler and more caring side.
He is surprisingly very good with the kids.
And then, one of the pebbles manages to climb too far up one of the cliff sides and starts to fall. Before anyone can panic, however, Simon rushes over and manages to catch them before they hit the ground, despite the fact that the pebble has to weigh well over a couple hundred pounds and Simon only has one arm. It's awkward and the pebble crashing against him knocks him on his ass, but Simon still sets them down gently, and makes sure the pebble is okay.
Suddenly Simon is swarmed by all of the pebbles, eager to climb all over him instead. He only has a moment to squeak in surprise, and then he's buried by a gaggle of overeager Eridian kids. Grace starts to rush over in concern, but then he hears something that completely stops him in his tracks.
Laughter.
Full-bellied laughter. Simon is lying there, laughing so hard he's got tears in the corners of his eyes, as the pebbles crawl all over him. Even though they're getting way up in his face, Simon is still being so, so gentle with them. He's letting them pet his hair and poke at his scars and the stump of his arm, their curious questions coming so quickly that there's no way that Simon is keeping up. But even still, he's smiling, and he's careful of their little bodies as he tries to sit up.
And seeing Simon sitting there, surrounded by his class, his kids, Grace just has a moment of growing awe...and dread.
Dread, because he knows those butterflies that just burst to life in his stomach. He knows these sweaty palms and dry mouth and shaky knees. His heart must have just done something weird because every Eridian within five feet of him just turned to him in alarm. Grace's face is feeling flushed, his head is spinning, and he kind of wants to throw up a little bit.
Mini comic based on a scene from bloodymary fic "where nothing bleeds" by intrstellarisms, really enjoyed it and wanted to draw one of my favorite scenes from it (link for the fic).
(i'll be honest, i also wanted to draw extra panel of Rocky putting his claw on the tombstone... maybe i should've included that...)

The funniest version of bloodymary, to me, is where Adrian finds Simon entirely separately and has to go through their own ordeal of bonding with a sad traumatized squishy wet human while wondering how their partner's going to react. And then when Rocky gets back theyre both nervously llike. Hey babe. So there's something I have to show u,,,,, also you're gonna have to get cool about a lot of things real fast. Meanwhile simon and Grace are sniffing at each other like two cats being introduced through a bathroom door
