Because realism, sharp detail and technical skill? Those are easy to judge. They don't really require thought or consideration. They can be quickly assessed aesthetically and ranked. You can call one artist a "better" artist than another because their technical skills are more advanced. Context, meaning, what you bring to the table, that's all easy to ignore.

And to the point about the quality of religious art? Maybe that was true, when the church had all the money and was suing art as a means of propaganda. But what did those artists do the moment that hegemony slipped just a little?

And without that money and hegemony, what does Christian art look like?
