Just finished the first chapter and it’s really good!! One thing I really love is the word choice used. It just hit in all the right places. Sentences that, without context, feel gentle and caring or like betrayal, but within the scene fits as just another thought. Some of my favorite sentences that I really loved:
“He had Jabber.”
“Zanka refused him.”
“Metal kissed briefly against his palm before the cloth covered it.”
I particularly like that last one because it personifies Mankira in a way that shows her affection for Zanka and how reluctant Zanka is to either accept or return such affections (or both).

Yknow the scene where Remlin admits to fucking with the spell and everyone seems to be expecting Zanka to blow up at them about it but he just. Starts laughing? And gives them a pass even though he nearly died? That scene is load bearing for my own personal Zanka characterization.
Kind of talked about in the notes but imma add my own thing about it. Not only is Zanka really hard on himself and not used to other people messing with him in the hellguard, i also think he just always holds himself to incredibly high standards. Especially considering he’s from a very well off family that, I have no doubt, holds their reputation as a top priority. He doesn’t care or even rely on the spell because that would mean he ‘isn’t good enough’ in his own mind.
I do also really appreciate that even though it’s a joke spell that arguably makes him look a little stupid you’d think he’d get peeved at being the butt of a joke. But no. He takes it with absolute grace. The only person he feels is responsible for his image and reputation is himself which i feel like comes from the pressure of needing to make the Nijikus look good. He doesn’t want to put that pressure on someone else. Especially a kid like Remlin who is, I think, about how old he was when he was at his lowest. So he’ll always just laugh it off like its no big deal so that he’s the only one who actually suffers.

Big Zanka rant bc I hate seeing people call him the potential man of Gachiakuta.
Zanka is already goated and I have proof. Has this rant been done before? Probably. Will I still write and post it? Absolutely. Prepare for the glaze.

First things first, it's been emphasized quite a bit right in the beginning that Zanka is the best person in the Cleaners when it comes to understanding and utilizing vital instruments. I think it stands to reason that understanding your own vital instrument is a given. It's a piece of your very soul, something that pretty much represents you as a whole. Not only is Zanka very well acquainted with his Lovely Assistaff (speaking to her every morning and whatnot), but he seems to have an easy time picking up on other's vital instruments as well. He helped Rudo figure out his own instrument, figured out Amo's whole show thing pretty quick, as well as catching onto that mud duo's shtick when we're first introduced to the raiders. Chalk it up to a strategic mind or a natural talent of his own, but that's something we haven't seen as much from other characters (whether bc it never became relevant in combat or something like that is irrelevant). This little skill of his, however, is just the tip of the iceberg that is Zanka's prowess.
Zanka is has incredible physical strength. Of course, we see him throwing and slamming things around like it's nobodies business but I want to get a little more analytical with it.
When we first are actually introduced to Jabber in the basement during that one trap mission, we get a pretty clear and indisputable display of strength from Jabber. Making a concrete wall completely shatter with his bare fucking hands. (Ch 14 in manga and ep 5 or 6 in anime). That's pretty insane if you ask me. Jabber has not just inhuman speed, but insane wall-destroying strength as well. And then we witness that fact that Zanka would win a straight fist fight against Jabber during the trash beast arc. Not only does Zanka catch those hands (literally) in his teeth. He manages to pry Jabber's hand away from his face. It's clear in the anime that the prying away of hands is an actual struggle between the two as Jabber is actively trying to stab through Zanka's skull, and Zanka is winning that fight.
So, it is pretty clear that if vital instruments were not a factor and they were just throwing hands, Zanka has the superior strength and strategic mind and would most likely win against Jabber.
(I'd also like to submit to the jury the fact that Zanka tore a massive boulder out of the ground and threw it Jabber like it was nothing during the trash beast arc and would've actually destroyed Jabber if not for the power up and invulnerability that comes natural with being wrapped all snug in one's vital instrument.)

Zanka has also shown the insane ability to dodge fucking bullets (idr manga chapter) thanks to his Hell Guard training. Not to mention all the other skills he's learned and likely mastered because of his time at the Hell Guard academy. He has a particular set of skills that give him a level of experience fighting against actual people, and not just trash beasts. He's been trained in focus, precision, and persistence that really contribute to how he performs in combat.
I'd also like to bring up the fact that Zanka has, since his cleaner trainee days, been able to single-handedly take down a massive trash beast in 3 blows or less (manga ch 125). That doesn't seem like 'potential man' shit to me gang.
Last, but not least, Zanka, during the doll festival arc, was the only person to show the initiative to still attempt an attack on Mymo after the Hell Guard bullets didn't do jack shit. Out of all the adults and professionals in the room, the 17 year old with a stick showed everyone how beating Mymo was possible with a single strike.
The only reason Zanka is a 'potential man' is because Rudo is the main character so he has to go up against terrorists, gods, and people with one hit KO type weapons.
You thought I was done? No.
If not for the very nature of Jabber's character and his weapon, Zanka would beat his ass, admittedly with some struggle because Jabber is also absolutely goated. Jabber is a masochist, meaning he likes getting his ass beat, meaning he likely gets hit often, meaning he probably has an incredibly high pain tolerance and durability for just about any type of damage. Jabber's weapon is a one and done deal. You get hit once, you lose. Zanka's weapon is primarily blunt force. The only advantage Zanka really get's from his weapon is the fact that it's a polearm and midrange. He's able to keep Jabber at a distance and perform a bunch of defensive moves to stay in the fight. The downside is that Zanka has to constantly choose between offense and defense moment to moment. He needs to keep hitting Jabber excessively, otherwise Zanka would probably get exhausted and get hit eventually anyway (again Jabber has hella pain endurance so Zanka would have to really hit him to win). Jabber legit only needs one crack and he wins. It's the type of match up that requires absolute perfection from Zanka in order for him to win. It's probably the least fair match up of the fucking century.
Overall, I refuse to believe Zanka 'ain't green enough' because my boy is actually hella smart and hella strong. His only flaw is that he's hella dramatic but that really only endears me to him more. (Throwing himself in the bottom of a well because people looked at him weird for picking up a stick is hilarious to me).
I feel so bad for him :,(. But my boy doesn't stay down for long!!
Big shout out to my girl Eishia too! We love character growth in this house! And Riyo is probably hella concerned for her adoptive brother but I also just have no clue how to read her in general. Very mysterious, that one.
I was very very happy to finally get some Zanka panels this chapter! I knew he'd be fine after Mymo but I missed him so much. I would not be surprised if Zanka started training super hard and throwing himself into a bunch of near-death experiences to try and get stronger.
I need my boy to start kicking hella ass soon and revoke the 'potential man' slander I see people throwing around.
