there was a pattern to the way yufan texted.

lower case letters, emojis, scattered pin yin with your limited chinese, and oddly enough strings of numbers.

strings of numbers when it was late at night, when you were swaddled in blankets, the light of your phone burning your eyes, and when words became apparently to much effort to type for him.

you never questioned it.

atleast, not until now.

you glance up at him, his eyes focused on his phone, one hand scrolling while the other rests on your legs thrown across his lap, tracing circles absentmindedly. you laugh.

"okay, spill, what are these numbers?"

you hold your phone up to his texts from last night.

"are they area codes?" he laughs at your question.

"god no shǎ guā,"

"don't call me silly," you compalin automatically. your voice quickly dissolves into giggles when he tugs you suddenly, tugging until you're pulled against his chest, legs straddling his lap, and his hands settled warmly on your waist.

"you really haven't known this whole time?" he grins, looking up at you.

"well i'm asking now, so come on. tell me,"

"520 sounds like wo ai ni,"

his fingers tap along your waist.

"i love you"

the room seems to warm.

"530 sounds like wo xiang ni. i miss you,"

"you spammed it five times,"

"i missed you five times,"

"five times?"

"i always miss you five times,"

". . .that's stupid," you mutter, face flushing, "so what the hell? you've been sending me secret romantic number codes this whole time?"

"yes," he laughs, "i have,"

it goes silent between the two of you, and you watch as he picks up his phone, typing something. your phone pings.

you look back at him, "that one's new,"

"mm"

"what's 1314?"

"yī shēng yī shì," he says quietly, "forever and ever"

you blink. he repeats it in mandarin one more time.

"i love you, forever and ever,"

by the time you arrive at jaehyun’s house with minju and eunchae, you can already here laughter and chatter inside.

woonhak opens the door as soon as you ring the bell, smile on his face. jaehyun appears next to him.

“hey! you guys made it,” he grins, “hurry up come in,”

music is blasting from a random jbl speaker in the middle of the kitchen island, cans of beer and red solo cups sitting on the table.

you’re met with familiar faces, everybody greeting you all. you smile, grabbing one of the cans.

your phone buzzes.

ʬʬ﹒STUPIDLY YOURS A.KH wrngs keonho being an idiot, based off the notebook

from the first day you met ahn keonho you should've known that he was all kinds of stupid.

always stupidly late. stupidly messy. stupidly boyish. stupidly good-looking in a way that irked you.

most importantly, though, was that he was stupidly everything you weren't. and as such, you should've expected him to do stupid things.

you just never expected he'd do them like this. or that he'd be this stupid.

"ahn keonho get down right now!"

your voice barely carries over the chatter of students surrounding you on the outdoor field, the festival music, and the shrill sound of feedback through the speakers. and even if he had heard your voice, he still wouldn't have listened. he wasn't listening now either.

of course he wasn't.

collective gasps and echoes of shock ripple throughout the school courtyard as people stop focusing on the festival and instead turn their heads upwards, fingers pointing, teachers shouting from somewhere behind you, ignored completely.

and there he is: boyish-smile and all.

like this was another ordinary day.

well, if ordinary involved sitting fully on the window ledge of the top floor of the school, only one arm supporting you.

your stomach churns.

"ahn keonho!" you try again, sharper than before, "if you don't get down right now I swear to every god out there-"

"hey!" his voice cuts through yours, clear and sharp. everyone seems to go silent. you watch as he leans even further out and how with his free hand, he cups his mouth.

"go out with me yn!"

heat floods to your face quickly—whether or not from being flustered or angry you couldn't tell.

you shake your head furiously, absolutely mortified. "are you clinically insane?! no! get down!"

"what was that?" he leans forward slightly, and even from your spot below you can see how his grip shifts. only his fingers hold him now. he gives you a look, one that says he can't hear you even though you know that he can.

“i said no!”

“what was that?”

a chorus of "ohs" and "ahs" fill the air.

your fists clench tightly as you watch him tilt his head, smiling as if he's won.

he seems to lean forward even more and then-

“fine!” you shout, voice cracking at the volume. “fine, i’ll go out with you!”

“what was that? come on, don't do me any favors. i don't want pity,” he calls again, laughing.

you take in a breath, letting go of yourself “I’LL GO OUT WITH YOU!”

"WHAT? SAY IT AGAIN FOR ME?" his voice echoes back.

"I'LL GO OUT WITH YOU DAMMIT, SO GET DOWN ALREADY!"

he goes silent, but you watch as he seems to shrink back inside the window. he laughs, chest shaking.

"okay okay, chill," he calls, brows raising, "i'll go out with you,"

📍cape walton beach

the moment eunchae pulls up in front of your house in her volkswagen eos, top off, and music blasting you know she’s plotting. “oh god,” you mutter, sliding into the passenger seat.

“what?” she grins, putting the car into drive, “let’s go pick minju up,”

you narrow your eyes at her suspiciously.

"okay maybe something," she shrugs, "but come on it'll be fun. relax,"

you snort, disbelieving. "i know it's got something to do with him,"

a coy smile erupts on her face at your words, but she says nothing in return. nothing but music fills the silence until the two of you finally stop in front of minju's house where she slips into the back seat easily, baby-pink stanley filled to the brim with ice water, in hand.

"hi hi," she smiles.

"helloooo!" eunchae exclaims, "are we ready to have so much fun today?"

"yep," "nope,"

minju laughs, "yn what's wrong?"

"eunchae's plotting something,"

"ooo i'm in,"

"you don't even know what it is!?"

"i trust her,"

"....how is that possible?"

the two only laugh, and you sigh.

though you came to the beach suspicious, as soon as eunchae pays for your poke bowl during lunch, you quickly forget about whatever she's plotting.

but it's when you let your guard down that an enemy strikes.

because just as the sun begins to set, and you're bending your ass backwards to get the photo of minju, eunchae calls.

"guys!"

and when you turn, you almost choke because behind her are three guys, and one particularly familiar. lifeguard boy. your eyes widen, shooting daggers at eunchae, who brushes you off with a tiny smile and wave.

you straighten up immediately, getting up from the sand. you smile at the three, but internally your heart beats out of your chest.

because life guard boy is standing right in front of you: hair slightly damp, wearing a loose tee, baggy shorts and birkenstock arizona's. and by the look on his face he seems surprised to see you to.

"it's getting late and i happened to pass by these three. we're all the same age, can you believe it?" eunchae grins, "i figured it'd be fun to hangout. more company never hurts,"

"...you what?"

"we were getting hungry anyways, it's dinner time," eunchae starts.

"e-"

"i'm minju," minju interrupts you before you can finish, smiling at the three.

these fucking traitors.

"i'm keonho," he grins, "this is donghyun and then this is seonghyeon,"

"and this is yn," eunchae says, pulling you forward. her and keonho seem to share a small smile, before eunchae is excitedly pushing minju and the others along to head to the boardwalk. just before she leaves, she whispers something into your ear.

this is your chance.

and then it's just you and him.

you watch as he stands there, running a hand through his hair awkwardly. "uh. hey," his voice cracks as he says it, and he immediately clamps his mouth shut.

you blink, before bursting into laughter. you give him a smile.

"let's catch up,"
