it's honestly kind of funny how the universe works, because a year ago, you were exhausted. james had gone off to college and in the process, seemingly forgotten he even had a girlfriend. he got busy, he got distracted, and you got tired of being a footnote in his new life. so you cut the cord. you cried, you moved on, you healed.
and then you ended up at the exact same university. same campus. same place. again.
at first, you actively avoided him. but campus is only big, not a whole country, and james is, well, james. once he realized you were here, he practically made it his part-time job to insert himself back into your orbit.
it started with shameless smirks across the quad, then escalated to random texts at 2 a.m. asking if you remembered that night when you two watched a spider-man marathon together. he takes every chance he gets to lean against doorframes when you exit a lecture, dropping casual, flirty remarks like you didn't break up a year ago.
you've gotten incredibly good at playing the indifferent ex. you reply to his texts when you want to pass the time, and leave him on read when you don't. it drives him crazy. you'd be lying if you said you didn't enjoy the power trip, but the truth is, the tension between you two has been simmering for months, thick enough to cut with a knife.
this afternoon, you're just trying to survive a sociology project.
you're sitting in the library with martin, a classmate who means well but tends to invade your personal bubble when he's focused.
"so if we rewrite this line and these...," martin murmurs, leaning in close to point at a line on your laptop screen. his shoulder presses against yours.
you look up, intending to stare at the wall to gather your thoughts, but your eyes catch on a familiar figure instead. james is walking right past the front of your table. his backpack is slung over one shoulder, but he isn't looking where he's going. his eyes are fixed entirely on you. that black sweater he always wore and those wired headphones always provoked a reaction in you, because that was your james, the boy who listened to music most of the time and wore the same thing until it vanished.
he doesn't smile. he just watches you, his dark gaze dropping for a fraction of a second to exactly how close martin is sitting to you. a muscle feathers in his jaw and he takes his phone to do something.
he keeps walking until he takes a seat a few tables away, dropping his bag onto the chair. james never breaks his line of sight.
buzz.
your phone lights up on the table. you pick it up, angling the screen away from martin.
do not reply: move away from him. you're sitting too close.
you suppress the traitorous flutter in your chest and look up. james is staring right back at you, phone in hand, an intense, unreadable expression on his face.
you type back with one hand, keeping your face completely blank.
you: lol no?
you watch him read it. his eyes darken slightly. his thumbs fly over his screen.
buzz.
do not reply: i'll see you behind the medical section. right now.
the medical section is tucked at the very back of the library. it's notoriously cramped, filled with heavy reference books, and almost always completely empty because the aisles are so narrow.
you watch as james stands up, grabs his bag, and walks away without looking back, disappearing into the maze of tall bookshelves.
you sigh softly, locking your phone. you turn to your partner. "uh, tin? i'll be right back."
martin blinks, looking up from the laptop, clearly a little confused by the abruptness. "oh, yeah. sure, take your time."
you stand up, smoothing down your clothes, and walk in the direction james took.
c'mon, y/n, you're just going to tell him to knock it off..., you tell to yourself, but your heart is beating a little too fast against your ribs. that's james' effect.
the lighting gets dimmer as you reach the back of the library. the air smells like old paper and dust. you turn the corner into the last aisle, the one pressed right against the back brick wall.
there he is waiting for you.
james leaning against the metal shelving, arms crossed over his chest. the moment you step into the narrow space, the air instantly feels heavier. there's barely enough room for the two of you to stand without brushing against each other.
"so," you start, keeping your voice in a low, even whisper. you lean against the opposite shelf, crossing your arms to mirror him. "what's the emergency?"
"he was practically breathing down your neck," james says, his voice a low, raspy murmur that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
"we were reading a shared document."
"he has his own eyes. he could've read it from his side of the table." james pushes off the shelf, taking a half-step closer. the proximity is immediate. you have to tilt your head up slightly to hold his gaze.
"why do you care?" you ask, raising an eyebrow. "you don't get to dictate who i sit next to, james."
"i know i don't," he admits freely, which catches you off guard. there's no arrogance in his tone now, just that heavy, quiet sincerity he's been weaponizing against you for months. "doesn't mean i have to like seeing some random guy invading your space."
"martin is my project partner."
"martin," james repeats, the name sounding like a curse word in his mouth. "does martin know you hate when people read over your shoulder?"
shit, you bite the inside of your cheek. he remembers. of course he does.
"you didn't call me back here to talk about martin," you point out, your voice dropping a fraction softer. james takes another step closer. the tips of his sneakers nudge yours. you don't step back. "no. i didn't."
he reaches out, his fingers lightly wrapping around your wrist to gently pull your arms uncrossed. you let him. his thumb traces the inside of your wrist, sending a dangerous, familiar warmth straight up your arm.
"i missed you today," he murmurs, dropping his gaze to your lips before snapping it back up to your eyes. "you ignored my texts this morning."
"i was in class."
"you were pretending i don't exist," he counters smoothly, a faint, lopsided smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. "you're getting really good at it, by the way. almost had me fooled."
"I'm not pretending anything," you whisper, though the way your breath hitches slightly betrays the lie.
"you're a liar, y/n," he whispers, leaning in just enough that his lips brush the shell of your ear, sending a shiver down your spine. "but i'll let you get back to martin. for now."
james leans in, his face inches from yours. you can smell his cologne, that familiar mix of cedar and something entirely him that makes your head spin. "yeah? then why did you come find me?"
"to tell you to leave me alone so i can finish my work."
he hums, a low vibration deep in his chest. he shifts his weight, boxing you in slightly against the books, his hand sliding from your wrist to rest on the shelf right beside your head. "you could've texted me that."
you swallow hard, staring up into his dark eyes, refusing to be the first one to look away. "i prefer to deliver bad news in person."
james smiles. it's a genuine, soft thing that makes your stupid heart do a complete flip.
he pulls back, giving you one last lingering look, his eyes burning into yours with a promise you both silently understand. then, with a maddeningly casual wink, he turns and slips out of the aisle, leaving you alone in the dim light, trying to remember how to breathe.
“I’ll carry the milkshake.” Juhoon announced as they exited the car.
“Fine by me.”
The pair exited the car and began walking up the path to Martins door, until Juhoon paused suddenly.
“Did you forget something in the car?” Y/n questioned.
“No, just… c’mere.” He breathed out, opening his arms.
“What’s this about?” Y/n chuckled, wrapping her arms around his torso.
“Just want you to know I got you. Whatever you choose to do, whatever happens, or whatever you feel, I got you. Always.”
“Thank you, Ju,” Y/n said, leading her head on Junoon's.
Juhoon sighed, placing a kiss on the side of her head, pulling away afterward and planting his hands on her shoulders. “Lock in though.”
Y/n rolled her eyes in response, earning a laugh out of Juhoon as they resumed their way to the front door. Only to be met with Keonho, Seonghyeon, and James launching themselves out the door towards them, excitedly greeting them with yells and jumps while Martin watched from the door.
“Hi Mar.” Y/n beamed at him, walking over to give him a hug. “Your boyfriend has your shake and fries.”
“Ooh yes,” Martin clapped his hands together and pointed at Juhoon, “give me.”
Juhoon chuckled, handing Martin the crumpled bag and cup.
The group entered the home, finding a coffee table full of snacks and the TV playing Spider-Man Homecoming.
“We got snacks and we can order some food later.” Martin announced as everyone found their place in the living room.
“Is your mom included on the snack list?” James said, fighting back a laugh as he grabbed a chip off the table.
“Get out of my house.”
“What is your guys’ problem.” Y/n laughed plopping down next to Juhoon. “First Ju with my mom, now you with Martins.”
“Just because the wrappers wrinkled doesn't mean the candy isn't sweet.” James shrugged, hiding behind the couch from Martin.
“Understandable.”
It was seven thirty now. The living room was filled with shouts as James and Keonho were playing Mario Kart. Martin, on the other hand, was standing in the kitchen, putting away the rest of the birthday cake his mother had bought, failing to notice Y/n standing at the doorway.
“Ya know, I don't think I’ve ever heard them yell at each other that much. Especially about drifting.” Y/n commented, planting her hands on the kitchen counter.
“It's the only time they can yell at each other about drifting, none of them can drive. Other than Juhoon but I don't think he would drift if you paid him to.”
“Yeah, but you know what, that's good cause our moms trust him.”
“That's true.” Martin nodded along, placing the cake into the refrigerator and taking out a bottle of water.
Y/n watched as he drank, appearing as though nothing was bothering or eating him alive. A striking contrast to her own feelings as she pulled his birthday letter out of her back pocket, fiddling with the parchment. Unbeknownst to her, Martin was going the same to his bottle.
“So, what were you and Juhoon doing at five guys.”
“What?”
“You said you were bribed to be there. What was that about.”
“Nothing uhm, he wanted to talk to me about something. It not important though.” She muttered, finally letting go of the envelope and allowing it to fall onto the counter.
“Right.” Martin nodded along once more, while his hand found the back of his neck. “You two are really close.”
“Me and Ju? Well yeah, I mean I'm close to all of you guys.”
“Yeah, it's just, I don't know I just realized it. You’re closer with him compared to the rest of us.” He stated, leaning against the countertop, “I mean, you guys have your little secrets or whatever.”
Y/n’s head cocked to the side, “Where is this coming from?”
“I’m just pointing it out.”
“But why are you being weird about it?”
“I'm not being weird about anything.” Martin scoffed, plopping his water bottle down.
“The tone in your voice is saying the opposite Mar.”
“What is there for me to be weird about?”
“I don't know. That's why I'm asking.” She scanned his eyes, “If something is bothering you then tell me.”
“Nothing is bothering me.”
“Why are you lying to me right now.”
“I’m not lying.”
“Yes, you are. Why does it matter to you how close I am Juhoon? Him and I have always been close. Just like me and you.”
Martin stared at her, the silence stretching uncomfortably before nodding his head. “Yeah.”
“Yeah what? What does that mean?”
“It means you’re right, okay? Are we done?”
Y/n glared at him, “What is your problem.”
“I don’t have one.”
“Right, ‘cause nothing screams ‘I don't have a problem’ more than ‘It means you’re right, okay? Are we done?’” She studied him, glancing back and forth between his eyes; waiting for him to crack. But he wouldn’t. All he did was stare back, his arms crossed over his chest. “Okay, you know what. Sort whatever the fuck this is out and then talk to me because you're treating me like I’m an idiot.”
“I never said you were an idiot.”
“And I never said that you did. But you’re treating me like I don't know you. Like I don't know when you're lying. We’re supposed to be close Martin!”
“We are close!”
“You’re not fucking acting like it!”
“Yo,” Juhoon interrupted from the hallway, concern plastered all over his face. “What is going on?”
Y/n’s eyes never left Martin. She was hoping he would answer Juhoons question, but all she got was an eye roll. “Can you give me a ride home?”
Juhoon’s brows furrowed, “Right now?”
“Yes.”
“Uh yeah, I guess.” He hesitated, his focus bouncing between the two.
“Thank you.” She breathed, rushing past Juhoon and out of the kitchen.
Juhoon’s gaze found its way back to Martin, “What just happened man.”
“Nothing.”
“That didn’t seem like nothing.”
“Oh well you two are on a roll today huh.”
“Yeah okay.” Juhoon blinked at him, before turning back around to follow Y/n
“What happened?” James questioned from the edge of the couch; Super Mario now paused on the tv screen. “Y/n just grabbed her bag and said she had to leave.”
“Uh, I don't know. I’m giving her a ride though, so I’ll talk to you guys later.” Juhoon responded, wasting no time in getting to the door. And it didn’t take long to spot Y/n standing beside the car.
“Hey, what happened in there?”
“Can we just get in the car?”
“Yeah” He nodded, unlocking the vehicle and opening her door before finding his way to the driver seat. “Are you okay?”
“Can you just take me home.”
Juhoon knew not to push any further, so he started the car and began driving away. On a usual car ride, his focus would be solely on the road. But this was not a usual car ride. One of his best friends that he considered family was upset in his passenger seat; because of his other best friend. And it was eating at him.
“This isn’t the way to my house.” Y/n spoke, finally peeling her eyes away from her window.
“I know.”
“Where are we going?”
“The beach.”
“Why?”
“You look like you need it.”
She couldn’t argue with that.
It didn’t take long for the pair to arrive at the beach and find themselves sitting in the sand in uncomfortable silence.
“Do you think we’re too close or something?” Y/n asked, her focus remaining on the ocean in front of her.
“To people who don’t know us, probably. Why?”
“Martin was going on about how you and I are closer than the others and how we ‘have our secrets, or whatever.’ Whatever that’s supposed to mean.” She shook her head, planting it in her palms out of frustration.
Juhoon scrunched his brow, “He was frustrated because he thought we’re too close?”
“Yes! He was asking about what we were doing earlier because I said I was being bribed, and he got weird because I told him that our conversation wasn’t anything important. And then he started with his whole ‘you two are really close’ thing.”
“Hm.”
“What does hm mean?”
“I just think he sounds a little jealous.”
“Can you be serious for two seconds.”
“I am. I think he sounds jealous because, all of a sudden two of his friends are in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, supposedly eating and chatting in the car supposedly about nothing.”
“Juhoon.”
“I'm being serious.” He insisted. “I know you’re mad at him, and I don't like the way he went about any of this either. But the both of you are more alike than you think. You don't know how to process having romantic feelings for someone, and I think if the both of you were in the same place where two of your friends, especially a specific friend, were a lot closer than you thought; you’d be a little grumpy too.”
“He made me really mad. He made me feel like an idiot, like he thought I was an idiot that didn’t know or care enough to know him properly.”
“I know.” Juhoon brought Y/n closer, wrapping an arm around her shoulder allowing her to rest her head against his.
⋆˚꩜。 warnings/info! slight smau, fluff, some use of y/n, downbad martin, crack, mentions of newjeans, strangers to lovers

⋆˚꩜。 📝: ok so this is kinda based off a tt I saw on my fyp 🥹 & I thought that it had potential for a lil story so uhh creds to the person I got the idea from and I hope u enjoy reading !! 🤗🤞🤞
part 1, part 2
You had spent your whole morning at the thrift store, trying to upgrade your new closet for the new season, you did have a lot of good finds but none of them were really catching your eye.
You were pushing your cart isle after isle, then you saw it.
It was the most perfect leather jacket you had ever seen. You’ve seen so many jackets just like this all over pinterest, who knew you could actually acquire something like this at the thrift store? You quickly reached your hand for it until..
snatch!
You don’t think you’ve ever felt any more jealousy apart from this moment.
You looked at the man who was holding your jacket, he was some tall, blonde, scrawny teenage boy who definitely looked like he had also been spending his whole morning at the thrift store. Based on his cart he had somewhat decent style, but that jacket was supposed to be yours whether he liked it or not.
you gave him the biggest glare of your life, all you wanted to do was wipe off his awful smirk from his face.
He rubbed the back of his neck feeling slightly embarrassed.
Well what were you really expecting him to do, give it to you? It was the thrift store after all.
He slightly opened his mouth, it looked like he was about to say something, but before he could speak you turned on your heel and walked yourself to the checkout with the cart that didn’t have the leather jacket inside of it.
“that was supposed to be my jacket, I already had the outfits planned for it!” You mumbled to yourself as you walked off.
but the blonde boy? His cheeks were flushed and he just stood there, watching you storm down to the checkout. He did feel some sort of guilt for grabbing the jacket you were eyeing down.. But oh well it was his now.

MARTINS POV:

╰┈➤𝒮eonghyeon
The dim, warm light from the desk lamp made Seonghyeon’s room feel incredibly cozy, filled with the comforting scent of fabric softener and wood. He was sitting cross-legged on the bed, his acoustic guitar almost forgotten by his side, his chest rising and falling at an accelerated pace. You had just finished laughing softly at a terrible joke he made, but the laughter faded away as he leaned in, closing the distance between the two of you.
With a slightly trembling hand, Seonghyeon reached out to brush a strand of hair behind your ear. The tips of his fingers were cold from pure nervousness, creating a sweet contrast against your warm skin. He held his breath, slowly dropping his gaze to your lips before leaning in inch by inch, his eyes fluttering shut just a millisecond before your lips could finally touch.
The bedroom door slammed open with a loud thud.
"MAN, MARTIN STOLE MY NUGGET!" Keonho burst in, protesting with the utmost indignity, pointing toward the hallway where Martin followed right behind, chewing with the most shameless look on his face.
Seonghyeon jumped back so violently that the back of his head hit the wooden headboard with a dull crack.
"Ow, crap!" he groaned, curling up and clutching his forehead while his whole face flushed a bright crimson. He grabbed his guitar at lightning speed, pretending to be deeply focused on tuning a string that wasn't even out of tune.
Martin stopped at the door, looked at Seonghyeon’s completely frozen posture, then at you flushed and curled up at the corner of the bed, and that teasing, playful smirk of his spread from ear to ear.
"Ooh… did we interrupt a moment, lovebirds?" Martin teased, nudging Keonho in the ribs, who only then processed the scene and widened his eyes, completely jaw-dropped.
╰┈➤𝒦eonho
The two of you were hiding out in the empty practice room around ten at night, sitting on the cold floor with your backs against the huge mirror. The faint smell of cleaning supplies and the low hum of the air conditioner were the only background noise. Keonho looked like a total volcano of shyness about to erupt, but he gathered every last drop of courage in his body. He turned his body toward you, nervously pulling at the sleeve of the oversized gray hoodie that covered half his hands.
"You… look really cute when you have that tired little face," he whispered softly, his voice cracking timidly on the last word.
He closed his eyes and slowly leaned in, his hands trembling slightly as they reached for your face, his lips almost touching yours in a sweet, hesitant peck.
The sliding door smoothly glided open.
Juhoon appeared in the doorway, holding two empty water jugs and wearing comfortable cloth slippers. He stopped, stared at the two of you frozen exactly an inch apart, and blinked slowly. Just blinked.
An agonizing, awkward silence filled the room for three agonizing seconds.
"Forgot my bottle," Juhoon said, in his usual completely monotone, peaceful voice. He walked slowly to the corner, picked up his bottle from the floor, and turned back around, closing the door with the exact same care he opened it with.
Keonho covered his face with both hands and let himself fall flat on his back onto the linoleum floor, letting out a loud, desperate laugh full of embarrassment.
"I hate Juhoon. I swear to everything sacred I hate that guy," he laughed in pure panic, looking at you through his fingers.

Backstage at the studio, Martin had taken advantage of a five-minute break to pull you into the wardrobe room, hiding you right between two racks overflowing with long coats. He loved the thrill of risking getting caught. With his microphone cable still hanging around his neck and his performance makeup untouched, he pressed you gently against the clothes hangers, one firm, warm hand on your waist and the other tilting your chin with precision, kissing you with a hunger that pulled a muffled gasp from your throat.
The mood was heating up and the kiss was deepening when a hand pulled the rack curtain open all at once.
"Martin, the producer wants you back to re-record the chorus," Seonghyeon announced on autopilot, holding a cup of coffee, completely oblivious to what was happening inside.
Martin didn't even move right away. He just slowly broke the kiss, resting his forehead against yours and letting out a low curse against your lips. When he turned his head to reply, Seonghyeon finally processed where Martin's hand was placed and his eyes went wide.
"Ah… Oh my God! Oh my God, sorry!" Seonghyeon took three quick steps back in a panic, almost spilling his coffee. "Didn't see anything! I mean, I did, but… five minutes in the studio, okay?!"
Martin let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. He turned back to you, pressing a long, sweet kiss to the tip of your nose, and whispered in your ear:
"Saved by Seonghyeon's complete lack of awareness. But we're finishing this in the van."
╰┈➤𝓙uhoon
Juhoon wasn't one for many words or big jokes, but when he decided to show affection, it was completely overwhelming. You were sprawling on the living room couch at the dorm late at night, the muted TV casting blue shadows across the dark wall. He had his large hand intertwined with yours, using his thumb to trace your lower lip with unbelievable slowness. Without any rush, he leaned in, holding your chin gently and sealing his lips against yours in a deep, calm, warm kiss.
Suddenly, the main ceiling light flickered on with a loud click, blinding both of you instantly.
James was standing near the light switch in a tank top, his hair a complete bedhead mess, holding an empty juice pitcher. He blinked a few times trying to adjust his vision and stumbled right upon the two of you glued together on the couch.
"Juhoon? At this hour?" James asked, his voice low and raspy from sleep. He walked over to the fridge looking like a zombie. "Turn off the light when you're done."
Juhoon let out a slow sigh through his nose, never losing his calm, centered composure, but he squeezed your hand just a little tighter on the couch.
"James. Turn off the light. Now," Juhoon requested, with a serene yet dangerous firmness that made James pause in his tracks, flick the light back off, and wander away in the dark, grumbling to himself.
╰┈➤𝓙ames
James had just gotten back from an exhausting schedule of practice and recordings. You ran into each other in the dorm kitchen while he was trying to grab a glass of water, but the longing hit him too hard. Unable to hold back, he set the glass in the sink, pulled you by the waist, and effortlessly lifted you onto the kitchen counter, fitting himself perfectly between your legs. His kiss was hungry, warm, holding the back of your neck firmly as he pulled you closer.
Neither of you heard the sound of laughter and footsteps coming up the stairs.
"AYO, JAMES! THE PIZZA IS HER—"
Keonho and Martin froze in the kitchen doorway holding pizza boxes. Seonghyeon was right behind them excited and almost ran into both of them. Juhoon simply appeared behind everyone like a silent shadow.
James slowly broke the kiss, but he didn't let go of you for even a second. He kept his hands firmly on your waist, slowly turning his head to glare at the audience of four guys standing at the door.
"Do you guys not have rooms or something?" James asked, his voice low, deep, and dangerously calm.
"The kitchen is a public space!" Martin yelled, already reaching over to grab a slice of pizza.

╰┈➤ 𝒮eonghyeon
"CARA, O MARTIN ROUBOU MEU NUGGET!"

"James. Apaga a luz.

A PIZZA CHEG—"
