Ex-Oklahoma City cop Daniel Holtzclaw found guilty of multiple on-duty rapes
In the trial of serial rapist ex-cop Daniel Holtzclawâa man who took an extraordinarily evil bet on Americaâs disenfranchisement of poor black women, to the point of regularly pulling them over and raping them on the streetâsome took note of the fact that he was facing an all-white jury and had an attorney who suggested his victims had an âagenda,â and concluded that we might as well prepare for the worst.
Then, last night, On Holtzclaws 29th birthday,and after over 45 hours of jury deliberations, the judge read the Holtzclaw announcement on a live stream: Facing a total of 36 counts, Holtzclaw was found guilty of 18 of them â including four separate counts of first-degree rape.
the all-white jury convicted Holtzclaw of charges related to eight of his 13 accusers, the Associated Press reported, with a total recommended sentence of more than 260 years.
After the verdict was read, sobbing Daniel Holtzclaw seems to mouth âHow could you do this to me?â to the all-white jury that convicted him.
The AP reported that the mother of one of Holtzclawâs accusers clapped as the verdicts were read.
According to the Oklahoman, some who had gathered at the courthouse sang âHappy Birthdayâ after the verdict was read. The newspaper reported:
Outside the courtroom, a prayer circle formed. âThank you for justice, Heavenly Father,â one woman said.
After the prayer circle, two women began singing the âHappy Birthdayâ song.
âHappy birthday, dear Daniel. Happy birthday, to you!â they sang.
His verdict is a triumph for poor women, especially women of color, who, until now, might have fundamentally and truly expected that if a cop raped them, they wouldnât be believed.
