another moment in the Untamed i love is right after Wei Wuxian chases Lan Wangji off after his return from the Burial Mound, where he's all like "i hate you Lassie! go away!"
and Lassie is all 😭 but stoic
and obediently leaves without a word only for Wei Wuxian to look after him wistfully while Wen Chao says "forgive me" twice off-screen
and it's such a lovely moment of associative editing!
we know that, within the diegisis (i.e. world of the story), it makes sense that Wen Chao would be begging for forgiveness etc etc, but this moment was edited such that his disembodied words are heard just as Wei Wuxian drops the facade of the uncaring Yiling Laozu for a second while Lan Wangji's back is turned, thus inviting the audience to make the association between these words and his internal state. so even though Wei Wuxian isn't saying anything, there's a suggestion that he is silently asking Lan Wangji for forgiveness, because he understands the moral complexity of what he is doing and also how he is hurting my baby boy. which is significant because he pretty much speedruns the entire Yiling Laozu arc without ever giving voice to his internal struggle regarding what he has become.
