Like yes he does eventually become chief cultivator according to MXTX
For the show canon, I can see it as Lan Zhan getting bored and wanting to retire so he passes it off

I do find it interesting how in the show, the change it so that JGY knows Qin Su is his sister before they get married, whereas in the books (im pretty sure at least) he finds out after the fact
Dont get me wrong, the whole story of Qin Su and JGS being a piece of shit is incredibly tragic, and then how fucked up to find out the person you fell in love with is actually your sibling???? like gross and so fucked up
