can they please stop putting him in troubling situations. he's like a cousin i worry about
its interesting that the people who were chasing in the rc look nervous about rakta showing up. raktas men have surrounded them as well; and rakta himself stands on the side of the furin group and the kid. i think that might be purposeful placement. he starts with addressing the furin group specifically. his words "let's hear what you have to say", are spoken in japanese, so it seems like he wants to hear furin's group out. i feel optimistic about rakta finding them actually lesgoo
In honour of what’s to come
I also love that Hiragi is clarifying that this is Not A Kidnapping/Raid and instead just a rather forceful reconnaissance measure to find out what's up with Suo. they don't want to cause trouble with the RC, they just want to know why their friend and fellow found family member suddenly decided to ghost them irl and tried to force them to move on faster with the most suffering open on his face that he's ever shown them (Nirei)

rakta showing up right before they have a chance to escalate w/ the mystery guys and not only being like "ok im gonna hear you guys out real quickly" but also translating for The Gangs sake oh i know thats so right. thats exactly how i thought he'd act. no immediate violence, opening a dialogue,,, IF a fight happens istg it will not be raktas fault
i'm really liking all the little moments we're getting of non-1st year characters talking about how suo means something to them too. we all know how much he means to the main gang + class 1-1 by extension, but with the rest of the cast, we majorly see them in relation to sakura and have a good grasp of the dynamic they share with him. which makes sense cos he's the main character.
so seeing hiiragi and now tsubaki name the space that suo occupies in their life—it's another reminder that these characters have an internal mindscape beyond what canon can show us. and also that, for a guy who presumably always meant to leave, suo sure couldn't help taking root in people's hearts. it's almost like human beings are meant for connection and actively seek to love and find meaning in each other, you idiot 🤣🫵
anyway, there's really something to be said about how the furin seniors—but especially ume's batch—take community so sincerely to heart. they feel locked into this whole found family business at a whole nother level and it warms my heart to imagine sakura and co catching up to them over time.
but for this two-faced bitch there are twice as many stars as usual
fair trade

Wind Breaker #223 thoughts: We knew that Endo has inside connections to Red Chanpuru, but did it ever occur to anyone that perhaps his "inside connection" isn't some low-level grunt he paid off to do the spying for him, but that he could actually have direct access to the powers that be in Red Chanpuru because he's engaged in "business dealings" with someone on the inside? And by business dealings, I mean dealings of the questionable sort, like perhaps, kidnapping a certain singer from a certain town in the earlier chapters?
We never did find out who the "old man" was, so what if this incident is actually related in some way??
We know Endo isn't exactly an upstanding citizen and he's got a boatload of money that has to come from somewhere, so it's not an overreach to speculate that he's likely a muscle for hire running dirty errands on behalf of powerful clients who pay him handsomely. It would explain why he knows his way around the city in such detail (because he's been in and out of it enough times to know) and has heard of the "stinky rumors" floating around town. And if the Red Chanpuru has indeed been corrupted by a very powerful individual, could Suo have caught wind of it and is trying to purge the evil on his own? Oh I am so seated for this development!
It bothered me so much that we never find out anymore info about who hired Endo for the kidnapping in the first place, so I hope does come back around in some fashion during this arc or in a later one, instead of being left dangling. Because why include chekov’s gun if it won’t later be fired? Ya know what I mean? 👀
Maybe it will come up in this one or maybe we will get another Endo centric arc later…

Now that we were given a person in Bankoku-Gai/Red Chanpuru called "Liu-san" who's probably Endo's guy and informer from the inside, I do want to make a guess on which Chinese surname it is and give my food for thought. (I will be taking about "Liu" only since I'm pretty sure "-san" is just a Japanese honorific.)
As a disclaimer: please take this post with a huge grain of salt. This is all for the fun of theorising as a Chinese fan myself and not to be taken seriously.
The most likely and probable surname being used for "Liu", like 90% likely, is 刘/劉. It is one of the top five most common surnames in China and among top ten most common Chinese surnames outside of China. Famous people like Andy Lau have this surname, as well as the historical figure Liu Bang who was the first and founding Emperor of the Han Dynasty (his history is really interesting if you like to look into it). The original meaning of 刘 used to be "a type of battle axe" but now it's just used as a common surname. (You may add this as a tiny anecdote/evidence to @grey-spark's Blades of Extinction theory [1, 2].)
The second most likely surname for "Liu-san" is 柳. It's a much less popular surname amongst the Chinese population (in the top 100-150 range), though it ranks in the top 20-25 in Koreans as "Yoo" or "Ryu". The Japanese variant is "Yanagi", and it's the same kanji used for one of Hiragi's vice captain's names, Yanagida Jien. The meaning of 柳 is "willow" and it is associated with ghosts in Japanese culture. In Chinese culture, willow branches are used during Tomb Sweeping/Qingming Festival to help ward off evil spirits.
The third most likely surname for our "Liu-san" guy is 廖. In Mandarin, it's actually pronounced as "Liao", but "Liu" is one of the Cantonese pronunciations/romanisations of it. It's the number 61 most common surname in China and most commonly found in Taiwan and Southern China. 廖's ancient meaning include "spacious", "empty" or "vast", though in the current day its use is relegated into a surname only like our first surname 刘.
The fourth and last likely surname for "Liu" is 留. This surname is even rarer than our second surname 柳, it didn't even break into the top 400, but this word is commonly used within daily conversations, and the meaning is "to stay (in a place)", "to stop/halt", "to remain", "to leave (an item, a message, etc)", and "to keep (something for someone)".
Thanks!!! It is really interesting, depending on how relevant this character ends up being, the name choice could be important, number 4 in particular has me thinking about it. I mean, a guy in RC or that works close enough and is leaking info to a guy that runs all type of shady business, it is suspicious, specially considering that RC keeps out of the public eye and remain unknown outside of Bankoku-Gai, if he's giving info he's either getting paid for it and his loyalty to RC is questionable or he's getting favours done back. One also has to wonder what the shipments he gets regularly in those huge boxes are huh
I have a feeling this guy might also be spreading rumours about RC for personal gain... The theory of inner corruption or a faction disagreement in RC feels more feasible each day.
I relate to suo so much sometimes I'm reading a post and my first instinct is nooo let him keep his mask, let him keep his secrets, let him keep his lies. what's so bad about never trusting anyone and doing everything yourself??? those are his emotional support defensive mechanism. he needs those!!
and then I remember thats actually a very very bad thing
The nature of Bankoku-gai as a city could be extended to Suo as a character.
When the gang first arrived in the city, everyone (sans Nirei who had already researched about it, so he knew what to expect), was easily distracted by all the restaurants and attractions. Especially Sakura, who’s whisked away by how boisterous the outer circle of Bankoku-gai is, in turn detracting himself from their initial goal. He nearly falls for its façade of prosperity.
Sound familiar?
As for Sakura falling for and getting carried away by charades…
Sakura’s initial suspicion of Suo was bordering on curiosity, even. But after Suo had elected him as class captain and done so much to help Sakura succeed, Sakura was lulled into a false sense of security. He’s one of Suo’s closest friends; of course he knows everything about him! There's no need to question Suo’s nature further despite Sakura’s former doubts.
In a similar manner, Bankoku-gai’s exterior is very flashy. Packed with a multitude of restaurants, stores, and eye-catching decor whilst being surrounded by a river, it’s a great location to stop at if you’re a tourist. After all, its diversity offers so many new things to explore. And Kasai’s geographical nature as a river island only isolates it from the other districts and even parts of mainland Japan.
If you don’t actually probe deeper into the city, it seems like a very quaint area. The outer circle of Bankoku-gai is only 1.5 kilometers long, so its dazzling nature is merely skin deep. In a way, it’s almost illusory, lulling unsuspecting outsiders into a false sense of security even.
Isn’t this also reflective of how Suo acts on the surface? He’s described as always joking around with his friends (Sakura in particular being the butt of it). His fighting style could be considered flashy too; a rather foreign one considering that it’s aikido, an art that focuses on parrying attacks rather than direct hits (much unlike the way most of the Furin kids fight). Suo is incredibly intelligent too, with his insight reaping benefits for the parties involved. He is also a very hospitable and kind person to others. Much like how Bankoku-gai most likely relies on tourism for its economy, Suo lets his outward disposition shield his true vulnerabilities.
As for the inside of Bankoku-gai, every entrance is locked. And heavily guarded. Its true nature is barricaded from the rest of the world, despite the steel doors being plain as day between the multitude of colorful stores. Much like how Suo keeps his friends at a distance, offering them advice and letting them open up to him, yet not reciprocating that vulnerability.
It also compounds Nirei’s written information. He’s incredibly good at investigation, so he’s able to find and compile lots of information on a topic he’s interested in. Though Nirei researched the outer circle of Bankoku-gai well, he wasn’t able to find much about its inner circle due to how protected it is. Similar to how Nirei didn’t have much information on Suo’s feats, yet he’s able to accurately pinpoint one of Suo’s weaknesses (to which the latter didn’t take kindly).
When Sakura and co. do try to access the residential areas, they’re rejected. Multiple times. They don’t have the passes needed to access the inner circle, so Sakura has to resort to asking for Suo. And the further they try, the more frustrated Sakura gets, because there is a “no pass, no exception” policy instilled for Bankoku-gai. But he’s desperate to reach Suo and won’t give up despite this massive barrier.
So Sakura, alongside Nirei, Sugishita, and his upperclassmen try to breach the residential again in the most convoluted way possible: by deception. Since directly asking won’t work, they’ve resorted to underhanded tactics (thanks to Endo). And it worked!
When Sakura does observe the surroundings of the ‘real’ Bankoku-gai, he attributes it to Suo. He doesn’t even call it ‘Bankoku-gai’s inside’ or ‘The residential area’; he specifically calls it ‘Suo’s City’. A stark contrast to the beginning of Chapter 222, where Sakura does refer to the shiny outer circle as Bankoku-gai. Maybe he has an inkling about Suo’s true nature, given that Sakura witnessed his outburst in KEEL.
With its dilapidated buildings and worn, compacted infrastructure, the state of Bankoku-gai is… not very good. Perhaps it’s due to poor economic upturn or government corruption. Not to mention that this is the area where the Red Chanpurus holds its base. And to the non-Bankoku-gai residents and out of universe, the RC seems to be nothing but enigmatic and shady. If these rumors are even true in the first place.
But it’s also a place that Suo holds near and dear to his heart. He grew up and trained here. The people he cares about also live in this caged-off area, as well as the organization he works for. It’s fair to assume that Suo deeply loves inner Bankoku-gai and its people, despite all the problems it harbors. And he too wants to protect his hometown.
Though its run-down state could also reflect how complex and haphazard Suo’s inner self is. His own turmoil, adversaries, worries and the “things people are better off not knowing about” are all enshrined in this place. Away from the rest of the world. It also reflects the lack of introspective internal monologue Suo has despite being a pretty important deuteragonist.
All of this is guarded by steel gates that don’t let outsiders in. Because neither the Red Chanpurus nor Suo himself want any external persons to know of their issues, because they can handle it themselves. Their strength comes from the deep, pre-existing bonds they share after all. But despite their extravagant and modest exterior, they’re deteriorating from the inside.

I think we misinterpreted chapter 222
Hear me out.
We were all like "What is Rakta going to do the Furin guys?" (or I was, and those who showed up on my feed seemed to think so too, if you already realized what I might be about to say- good for you).
But what if he wasn't handling the Furin guys? Because it makes even less sense that we didn't see Rakta in chapter 223 if we thought he was. I was confused about this with how we went back and saw Umemiya and Hiragi and the others, because I was certain they were about to get beaten up (and I was scared too).
But you guys remember that panel where it was like "There they are!" with people on the roof? This one.
i like how the fandom was like “surely class 1-1 should have spoken to umemiya/hiragi/a senpai before going to bankoku-gai! the seniors will have a much more reliable plan” and then we cut to umemiya and hiragi straight up infiltrating the place. illegally
