I can explain (in the comments). [X]:
Disclaimer: I did not draw this art I merely embellished it with my mouse. Based on this panel.
Wouldn't it be funny if Nirei, the most timid of the class, is the only one among them who doesn't have some deep-rooted traumatic past and his timidity is just the result of him having come from an incredibly sheltered background (that and entering a delinquent school) 😭
Listen, much as I adore my wabi-sabi departures, the idea of Suo leaving Furin and it being a lesson in "letting go" just doesn't work for me, because it goes against the very message (and catharsis) this series has always tried to convey. Let me explain.

Am currently knee-deep in the Suo feels but I'm just gonna leave an old thought here.
Just saw one of those "Omake" clips where Sakura exclaims if Suo's "a foreigner" and Suo just waves it off and says "Nah, I'm Japanese." and it's very obviously a bold-faced lie (but also "bonus clips" usually fall under the "not actual canon to be taken seriously" canon), buuuuut I did have a moment where I entertained the thought of: What if Suo is Japanese by birth and then abandoned/orphaned and later brought into the Red Chanpuru fold, and adapted to the name "Sun Fei". Though ngl I definitely would much prefer Suo being the name that grew on him because it was the name Furin gave him that helped him to be "reborn again" and live as himself. Hush my feelings I am not ready to go there with you yet. Playing around with the idea of Suo always straddling between two worlds that are both him, and dealing with some low-key identity crisis and a sense of belonging.
Nobunaga Shimazaki, reviewing Wind Breaker chapter 217, probably: It's just like four different languages and maybe eight lines how hard can it be ---
Nii-sensei: *drops later chapters where Suo speaks fluent Thai and Burmese*
It's a bit lost in the English translations, but Suo and his vice-generals Rakta and Bacchus speak English and Japanese amongst themselves and I think that's really neat! :3
Mandarin AND Vietnamese (AND Hangul on the next page)?! In my Wind Breaker Chapter 217?! We're in for a treat!

::: screams into the void :::::
What do you MEAN Nirei found someone who knew something so intimate about Suo but could not remember who said that. What do you mean there's the possibility that Nirei could not remember who, because they were not a familiar face he'd seen around during their neighbourhood patrols? What do you mean that detail about hating natto seemed way too ~ childish ~ of a weakness that Suo couldn't possibly slip up and reveal about himself given he's too sly, but would absolutely be the type of weakness privy to someone who Suo might've been less guarded around - perhaps as a child - who he used to spend a lot of time with? What do you MEAN there could already be crumbs about Suo's background that goes all the way back to chapter 61.
lowkey kinda expected him to doordash suo back to sakura by force himself..
The fact that his name was "Sun Fei", but he accidentally becomes "Suo" when he enters Furin, and everyone just knows him as "Suo" and calls him "Suo", and the name sticks with the guy as the school days go by, starts to grow on him a little, even. Maybe. And when he goes back to Red Chanpuru and is "Sun Fei" again, now it is that name that feels distant but the name he needs to get used to being called again, because that is who he really is. He's gotten careless, too attached to that "fake" name. A name that is not real, he reminds himself. And when Sakura, Nirei and the others come charging into Red Chanpuru demanding "Suo" back, he stubbornly tells them he is "Sun Fei", siding with the other generals of Red Chanpuru, and then a brawl ensues.
"But you're Suo", Sakura or Nirei would inadvertently blurt out mid-fight, and the others from Furin would chime in with their whole chests, and that is when "Suo" finally realises how precious that name had already become to him. How "Suo" has always been real to the guys at Furin. And when the dust finally settles, he chooses the name "Suo", the same way "Sun Fei" is that part of him that shoulders the burdens and memories of his past, he can now face "Suo" honestly as a real part of himself: a student of Furin who now carries the memories of the new family he wants to protect and belong with.

Diving back to early chapters of Wind Breaker at 2am to dig for clues abt Suo and my current theory is that either this mirrors Suo's own backstory (where he could not ask for help/didn't know how to), or there's someone in the Red Chanpuru he's hesitated/ was unable to help in the past that led to some dire consequences, and he now feels beholden to return and stay with the clan (and by proxy by said person's side) out of guilt and obligation to make things right.
What if Suo's eyepatch hides an actual scar inflicted on him when he was with the Red Chanpuru aka with Avatar's Zuko/MhA's Todoroki, or is that too cliché of a tragic backstory. But it's not like Wind Breaker has ever been anything but a straightforward plotline. I think I might be more disappointed if it tried to subvert expectations 216 chapters in. 🤔
P.s: I would love for Suo's arc to be one where Suo is bound by some kind of "blood bond" to the Red Chanpuru clan, and the Bofurin family will come to claim him and prove that their bonds are stronger than blood ties (gimme my Found Family trope I NEED). Of course I will also be expecting a brawl, Sakura to face off Chanpuru's boss and best him, Chanpuru acknowledging Sakura's might and Suo returning to Bofurin, and Bofurin gaining yet another powerful new ally (that will eventually come to their aid when they encounter yet another new enemy), with Bofurin's reputation and influence spreading beyond their district. And of course, the Kumbaya after every arc reaches its closure.
