darling, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson aren't real and Sherlock the series is not based on true events. That means Ben does not decide Sherlock's sexuality and you are allowed to ship whoever you want, just as Ben is allowed to believe his character is straight. That's the wonderful thing about fiction: it can be whatever you want it to be Don't forget that.
First off, thanks for this ask, and you are absolutely right, everyone can think whatever they want to and until it is canonically written otherwise (which up to this point, Sherlock’s sexuality has never really been touched in canon outside of “I’m married to my work” and “I’m flattered by your interest” and “girlfriend’s aren’t my area”) then hey, whatever fanfic floats your boat is totally fine by me.
HOWEVER (and this is about to get long, and whoever you are I promise I am not mad at you or trying to start something, this is just what I have to get out after all the shit that’s hit the fan recently)
You’re probably referring to what Ben said in OUT, about Johnlock and the shipping thing. I’ve been thinking about the whole hullaballoo over the OUT article and really I’ve come to the conclusion that’s similar to this, that everyone can think what they want and really none of us, not even Martin and Ben, have a say over what happens in the next episodes of Sherlock. Only Moffat and Gatiss do.
The thing is, I think no matter what Ben says about Sherlock’s Sexuality/Personality/Johnlock/Attitude Towards Romance (other than being uncomfortable with the smut that surrounds Sherlock, because I can see why he is uncomfortable with it and why he wouldn’t want to talk about it in an interview that is supposed to be about The Imitation Game and the good work he did with that film and character) is complete and utter, predesigned, made to confuse, bullshit.
Here’s the thing: I literally CANNOT see how Ben can realistically believe that Sherlock is a machine. I cannot see how on earth he could come to that conclusion, when he as a conscious actor plays Sherlock, like THIS:

^^^^^ THAT RIGHT THERE IS THE ABSOLUTE INNERMOST SHERLOCK, THAT IS HIM IN HIS HEAD, and that does NOT look like a machine to me, or someone who doesn’t care, or only cares as a friend or at a superficial level.
To me, there is NO WAY that Ben could POSSIBLY BELIEVE all that stuff that he said in the article about Sherlock being an unfeeling monster. Is he a “lustful cock monster” as Ben was quoted as saying? NO, canonically he isn’t, but Ben is in no way playing Sherlock as a character without emotions. Unless he really strongly disagrees with Moftiss’s portrayal of Sherlock and is only doing this at their request, I just can’t accept that the believes what he’s saying. That’s really just where we’re at.
I am going to ship what I want. Ben can say what he wants. Moftiss can say what they want. Martin, Louise, Amanda, Andrew, ALL OF THEM, can say what they want. I, as a fan, will literally NEVER BELIEVE THEM, until the day that Sherlock airs for the confirmed very last time ever in this world, and the credits roll and Johnlock still isn’t canon. I will NEVER TRUST WHAT THEY SAY. They’ve told us lots and lots of lies before and then they pull this shit on us:

That they haven’t been leading up to this
THAT SHERLOCK DOESN’T FEEL ANYTHING
THAT JOHN AND MARY ARE DESPERATELY IN LOVE
We can all think what we want to but THE MATERIAL DOESN’T SUPPORT EVERY THEORY.
If Johnlock never happens, I as a fan will be upset at the missed opportunity but ultimately I will NEVER be embarrassed or tolerate being talked down to for thinking it could happen. The text supports it. It just does. This many people cannot all be having the same hallucination and seeing stuff that isn’t there.
Ben is doing EVERYTHING in Sherlock ON PURPOSE and it just doesn’t match what he said in Out. It doesn’t. So I don’t buy it.
