Hello! This is an obligatory pinned post about me. 

My name is Ashlee and I’m an artist and occasional writer, currently primarily for My Chemical Romance with some other fandoms sprinkled in from time to time! The blog is 90% SFW but no promises. Here are all the things I post most here on this blog, as well as things I’ve done in the past that I dedicated a lot of time to. Enjoy!

THE GILDED FREEFALL CHAPTER 38

Chapter Summary: Traversing the demon realm with three captives, Huntrix begins a grueling trek through the mountain range separating them from a daring rescue.

Chapter Blurb: The demons are just as exhausted as they are by the time they reach the other side of the mountain pass. It’s pretty obvious now that they’re here why other demons would flee into the ridge for cover; it’s jagged on every side of them, difficult to navigate, and the air feels thin and icy when there’s no sun to heat up the rock underfoot and underhand. Derpy does his best to help, but he can’t particularly carry six weary bodies on his back; he wouldn’t even be able to carry Dae-Jung alone. The girls take turns sitting on the tiger’s back instead — and even at one point, Jelly accepts a ride — until eventually they come to a complete stop at the slowly flowing river that cuts through the clearing.

There’s no moon, but it feels a little brighter than where fragile brambles and tree limbs swallow up the space overhead. If only there were thick brush and healthy branches full of leaves to shelter their presence…

Min-Jun rubs his eye sleepily before sliding off his friend’s tall body and making his way to the icy river to splash his face, and Dae-Jung starts palming water into his mouth, and Jelly… hesitates, because the three hunters are looking at her more intently.

“I won’t run,” she says. She can barely keep her eyes off the slow-moving current for more than a second. Her webbed hands wring together. “I w-won’t… You said if we led you through the mountains, you’d give us more food. I don’t have anything else to work towards anymore, so…”

Honestly, Rumi doesn’t like any of this. She hates that she’s worried about them running off and doing something, anything, to make Jinu’s rescue harder. She hates having to keep anyone captive — even demons — and she really hates the way her training whispers in her ear, telling her it would be an easier option to just cut them all down with her blade. What kind of nightmarish thought is that, to intrude into her mind? For the first time, she thinks maybe she could understand a little bit. The feeling of Gwi-Ma’s voice invading and implying and condemning. Zoey and Mira are looking to her now, though; they’re looking to her for what they should do next, because they’re just as unsure as she is.

Rumi didn’t earn Jinu’s trust through violence.

Added these to The Gilded Freefall...! I have the third act image done but we'll hold off on that spoilery act title for now. ;) I've got about 1/2 of the next chapter done, and since I have tomorrow and Monday off work, I'll be getting that to you very soon~!

Jinu had become a wheezing throne underneath Zoey after she'd sat all her weight on him, but her attempts to restrain him finally stop. Rumi can see the lights turn on behind both her and Mira's eyes; they glance between Jinu's flailing limbs and Rumi's own mortified expression, a little dazed by the reality of it. They're asleep — but not. Waking worlds and dreams aren't supposed to go hand in hand, yet here they are, gaining awareness that people don't usually get to discover in the trenches of REM sleep. In unison, Huntrix looks around and takes it all in. The rolling hills and rich forests around them look like they're pulled from a pretty painted picture, with the broader strokes ripped from Jinu's memory. Tree trunks are lined thick in impasto strokes, and flower petals twinkle like broken glass. It's a stark contrast to the dim and barren realm they'd fallen into. Mira gawks at this serene world around them as if it had gone from black and white to full color. "Wait... We’re in a dream? Your dreams?" Rumi understands the disorientation, because she'd had a hard time grounding herself during these sleep-walks too. She thinks about the incident in the bath house dream — how she'd smacked Jinu to near-death with a scrub brush to get him out of the tub — and turns a little red in the ears with the memory. (No, she thinks, don't think about that too much, or we'll all end up suddenly naked in a bath...) She breathes out and says, "Technically, I think we're in his dream right now." And it's more beautiful and calming than she even remembers. Better than the last place she'd visited in his mind... Bless his heart, Jinu is still fighting against his new occupation as a floor mat, squirming and trying to shove Zoey over. "Will you — get — off of me...!" Zoey leaps off him in an apologetic heartbeat. “Oh, jeez! Sorry! We’ve just been looking for you.” From the floor, he grumbles, “Well, you found me.”

"Rumi," he says in dim relief. "You're late. Sit down, meet my family. My sister, my mother-" He gestures to the other figures in the darkness. When she focuses more intently on them, the sight leaves her at a loss for words.

Two faceless dolls robed in intricate garments, stiff-limbed, lean against the lip of the table — built entirely with bound rice straw. Jinu reaches over to press a hand to the smallest figure's back and a few old coins nestled in its faceless head slip free with a clatter on the table. She can't help the dread that floods her when Jinu turns his pleasant stare back toward her. "We were just finishing dinner. No worrying about an empty stomach, don’t you think? There's plenty left for the king's most welcomed company. You're — pop star royalty, right?"

There are many plates situated on the table; one is decorated with painted stones in stacks, and another platter is lined with dark tree husks and decomposing lotus roots. Bowlfuls of mud sit untouched in front of his straw family, while Jinu selects a flat clay pancake from a pile in front of him. As he brings it to his lips, fingers scabbed with mud, Rumi recognizes the tray he had taken it from is already half empty.

Words from their previous conversation echo in her mind — intimate recollections of Jinu playing at the river's edge with his sister, creating make-believe meals from the unpalatable soil around them.

"Don't!" she cries out, then deftly smacks the molded mud from his hands. It falls and makes a wet, awful sound on the floor beside him. The look Jinu shoots her is both astonished and soured before he leans down and tries to salvage the splattered remains.

"What are you doing?" he hisses, "Wasting palace food like that—"

His breath is punched out of his body when she barrels into him, lips hushed by the soft curve of her shoulder as she presses him close.
