In Buddhism, the bud of the lotus symbolizes potential. The lotus flower represents an awakening, spiritual growth, and enlightenment. Just as the lotus flower emerges from the water clean, the lotus also represents purity of body, speech, and mind. The lotus could be thought of as an awakened mind, which grows naturally toward the warmth and light of truth, love and compassion. Kalma was the goddess of death and decay in Finnish mythology with her name meaning ‘The Stench of Corpses.’ Her favourite places to linger were graveyards and cemeteries; in fact, one Finnish word for graveyard is ‘kalmisto’ which is derived from her name. Some sources stated that she could move much like a puff of smoke. Kalma lived in the Finnish underworld called Tuonela, and was the daughter of Tuoni (king and god of the underworld) and Tuonetar (queen & goddess of death). She was accompanied and protected by Surma, a dog-like monster who guarded the gates of Tuonela. She also had four sisters: Loviatar (goddess of plagues), Kipu-tyttö (goddess of illness), Kivutar (goddess of suffering) and Vammatar (goddess of disease). The Three Witches, also known as the Weird Sisters or Wayward Sisters, are characters in Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The witches eventually lead Macbeth to his demise, and hold a striking resemblance to the Three Fates of classical mythology (The Moirai). Shakespeare’s witches are prophets who hail Macbeth early in the play, and predict his ascent to kingship. Upon killing the king and gaining the throne of Scotland, Macbeth hears them ambiguously predict his eventual downfall. The witches, and their ‘filthy’ trappings and supernatural activities, set an ominous tone for the play. The infamous ‘Double double toil and trouble, Fire burn and cauldron bubble‘ is a rhyming couplet chanted by the three witches.
