There’s a reason why I don’t tell people I’m a convert, especially online. Invariably, somebody has said or will say something shitty about converts and try to justify it with social justice jargon. Or they want me to divulge all sorts of personal information about how I decided to convert.

The people who know me and love me and care about me and accept me as a Jew without question or qualification (and doesn’t pull this separate-but-equal shit I see go on so much here) are the only ones who are permitted to know that about me. The rest of you haven’t earned my trust enough to tell you that yet.

As for “born Jews” (or the popular born-and-thus-more-Jewish term “ethnic Jews”) vs. “Jews by choice” (or the popular totally-have-nothing-against-converts version called “religious Jews”) …

Muthafucka, I would not even begin to know in any concrete way whether or not I had Jewish ancestors. I hope I did, but the fact of the matter is a little thing called chattel slavery makes that knowledge virtually impossible to find. I know that the Sunday school version of chattel slavery makes it look like all that happened was white people making Black people work really hard, but the systematic dehumanization of African peoples (and I use plural deliberately) meant destroying our ability to pass on our languages, our histories, our religious traditions, even basic fucking literacy–things that have been central to the survival of the Jewish people in the diaspora.
