Final Goodbye
Its that time of the year again, the last day of Spring and the final day of April.
Xavier found himself at the beach again, sitting and staring at the serene ocean The waves lapped gently against the shore, coming and going in their timeless rhythm. The sun is just about to set, painting the sky in shades of warm red, orange and yellow.
Xavier soaked in the view in front of him as if he is seeing the view for the first time. Looking around with curious eyes, taking in the beautiful scenery unfold. Then came the soundâthe soft, familiar footsteps approaching from his right, slow but sure. The footsteps stopped just behind him.
âYou came here again? I thought you left already. Left meâŚâ Xavier said softly, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips, without looking who it was. He didnât need to see or turn around, he knew the person already.
âI was always here and I never left you Xavier.â Daphne said as she sat down beside him on the beach, her voice gentle, like the breeze that danced across the sand.
âHmm. But itâs⌠itâs been so long. âXavier turned to look at her. Her face, lit by the glow of the setting sun, looked just like it had the first day he saw herâsoft, warm, and achingly beautiful. He raised a hand to her cheek, brushing it tenderly. She leaned into his touch, placing her hand over his.
âYes, so what? Why does it matter how long has it been? Am I not allowed to stay any longer?â Daphne said in a playful manner but her words held weight.
Xavier hesitantly lowered his hand, curling it into a fist in his lap. He looked away, down at the waves that were now brushing against his feet.
âYou are,â he whispered. âYouâre allowed to do whatever you want. But⌠I canât hold you back anymore. Itâs time to let go.â he said looking up to the sky, tears brimming his eyes. Xavier heard a long sigh coming from Daphne. She looked at him and then faced the vast ocean in front of them, a smile still playing on her lips.
âSo, you are here to say goodbye. (Sighs) and here I thought you missed me enough to come spend time with meâ She let out a low chuckle.
âI do miss you, my star,â Xavier replied, voice breaking. âMore than youâll ever know. Iâm sorry it took me so long to come back. Forgive me, if you can.â
Silence stretched between them, only the crashing of waves and the chirping of the last of the birds could be heard.
âItâs alright. I forgave you a long time ago my love.â Daphne said with longing in her eyes. She stood up and dusted off the sand from her dress.
âI guess itâs a goodbye then Xavier.â
Xavier looks at her, he tries to say something but doesnât find the right words to express himself. He lets his eyes talk. Daphne stared back at him. Their eyes meet, Xavier stood up before her, towering over her slightly, reaching for her hands and giving them a gentle squeeze.
âI will always remember you Daphne⌠Forever and alwaysâ Xavier said with a sad but knowing smile.
âI know you will Xavier.â
She gave him one last smile, a single tear slipping down her cheek.
She leaned forward and pressed a kiss beside his lips, Xavier closed his eyes and leaned into that kiss before opening his eyes again.
A gust of wind swept across the beach, and Xavier instinctively shielded his face from the blowing sand. He looked up again, gone was the presence he once felt. Gone was the warm embrace of the person he thought he will live his forever with and the warmth replaced by the cold breeze of the sea.
She was gone.
The beach was empty. He was alone.
The sun had nearly disappeared into the horizon taking away the warmth and cherished colours, giving its way to the purples and deep blues as night fell. Xavier sat there in silence, knees pulled close to his chest, a single Polaroid cradled in his hand.
He kissed the photograph gently and laid it beside him in the sand.
Above, a single star twinkled a little brighter than the rest. A tear traced down Xavierâs face as he looked up, then back at the ocean stretching endlessly before him.
The Polaroid sat nestled beside himâan image frozen in time. It was a picture of him and Daphne, taken on her birthday years ago.
And as if whispering a secret meant only for her, Xavier spoke his final words to the wind.
âI love you.â
This was the concept art for the story - Xavier and Daphne on the beach before the nightfalls.
