harley watched with quiet amusement as the gecko's little head swiveled from side to side, taking in the crowd like he owned the place. " dunno. just know it was enough to annoy him, " he said, sounding almost proud of himself. “ my mom offered me fifty bucks to change it. little does she know somebody else gave me a hundred not to. ” he punctuated it with a shameless wink before coaxing the gecko back onto his shoulder, where it settled comfortably against the collar of his shirt. " nah, " harley said with a grin. “ i trained him well. ”
❝ was it your father? ❞ winter means the person who's paying counter to his mother. it could've been his sister, too. what she's gleaned of callie over the years is that she would enjoy giving her brothers some hell. ❝ how old is he? is that as big as he gets? ❞ there's no problem with reptiles, she's just not used to them as they don't have them on the farm and they're nowhere close to the bayou.
it's reactionary, something she can't control, the way her cheeks dust a little pink at the friendly wink. the corners of her mouth shift, a smile pushes them back for a second. ❝ i never would've thought they were all that trainable. ❞ winter moves a step closer. ❝ reptiles aren't exactly known for their evolved brains. ❞ maybe that was just crocodiles and the like. she shifts gears. ❝ how are you enjoying the break from hockey? are you going to any of the world cup games? ❞ there were a few games happening in dallas if memory serves her correctly.
rust let out a scoff the moment he caught sight of edie. not the irritated kind, but the one reserved for old friends who had earned the right to give him grief. a quiet chuckle followed as he shook his head. " what, you flirtin' with me now? " he drawled, one brow lifting. without another word, he hooked the toe of his boot beneath the stool beside him and pulled it out, tapping the worn vinyl seat with two fingers. it wasn't much, but for russell boone it was about as close to a warm welcome as anybody was liable to get. " careful, " he muttered. “ i might just take you up on that offer. ” his gaze wandered toward the wall of bottles lining the back bar, rows of bourbon and whiskey blurring together until every label looked the same. he squinted. “ fuckin' hell... ” he leaned forward, patting at the bar top before checking the pockets of his jacket with growing annoyance. “ where're my readers? ” he muttered the question mostly to himself, completely oblivious to the pair of reading glasses resting inches from his untouched glass of whiskey.
a short, dry laugh scratches in the back of her throat and edie shakes her head almost imperceptibly. ❝ flirting? ❞ incomprehension lifts her brow, as though she's lost the meaning of the word somewhere along the way. ❝ i don't think i know how to do that anymore. it's been so long. ❞ the bit of humor at herself comes as she settles onto the seat russell pulls for her, not before she tips her head in quiet gratitude. if she thinks about it, her husband's death was a few years ago and she can't recall a time since that she's even entertained the idea of someone else. even before his passing the romance had long been burnt out between them. so much of her life she's spent in service of others in one way or another, edie's enjoying the time to herself. ❝ if that's what it sounds like to you then so be it. ❞ edie turns to her friend who's weathered the time in this town just as she and she smiles a little at him. ❝ i could do worse than russell boone. ❞
❝ you don't need to caution me when i'm offering. ❞ as she finds amusement in his squinting at the labels lining the bar back, because she can relate too much, she turns her focus on them as well. ❝ you think they have cognac in this place? ❞ delicate hands pull her own glasses from her bag that she's placed in the seat beside hers, opposite of russell, and once she has them on her face she leans forward slightly to scan. all of his pats and shifts gather her attention and she turns to him with a smirk and reaches out for his hand, her touch light as she moves it over his readers right by his whiskey. ❝ if it were a snake it would've bit you. ❞ perhaps he wasn't feeling the same way, edie doesn't want to assume, it was nice to be in the company of someone who reminds her of her age, just more in the form of solidarity. ❝ my treat so don't hold back if you've been wanting to try that top shelf dalmore. ❞
fiadh had long since come to the realization that tiny sprouts was not, in fact, a store. it was a beautifully disguised temptation, a labyrinth of carefully arranged trinkets and charming little curiosities designed with the sole purpose of unraveling whatever fragile restraint she had managed to gather before stepping through its doors. a bag already hung at her side, carrying the evidence of her earlier surrender, while the third blind box of the day rested between her fingers. beneath the soft glow of the shop lights, the colorful packaging seemed impossible to resist, every tiny detail promising the possibility of finding exactly what she had been searching for.
" before you say anything, " fiadh began, lifting a finger in warning as she turned toward her companion, her expression carrying the practiced seriousness of someone about to make a very convincing argument. " i would like to remind you that i have been incredibly responsible. " the confidence behind the statement was almost impressive. almost. " besides, " she added, the slightest bit of hope betraying her composure, brightening her features despite her best efforts to remain reasonable. " it could be the rare pink one i've been looking for. "
❝ i wasn't gonna say anything. ❞ amusement brightens her eyes as she peers at fiadh, the hint of a smirk betrays that there might be lighthearted judgment behind her gaze. only the teasing kind. ❝ define responsible. ❞ the challenge set as her attention drops to the bag the other is carrying, saying so much without actually saying it. winter had also been working on her spending and so far her hands were empty, and not because it reflects the state of her wallet. if she truly wants, needs something she knows she could ask her father to send her a venmo. ❝ what if it isn't the pink one? ❞
while she lets that hang between them winter picks up a candle in a beautiful glass jar from the shelf, her kryptonite, and brings it close so she could inhale the scent. night blooming jasmine. a favorite of hers. winter's been doing so good so far while they'd been shopping around, simply browsing and telling herself she doesn't need anything. until now. ❝ ok... maybe we should just spoil ourselves. ❞ already coming up with an internal argument so that she doesn't have to tell herself no, winter continues to hold onto the candle. ❝ i mean... it's not that expensive, right? ❞

↳ 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 … the hideaway, world cup watch party.
an intense person. to put it lightly , at least. the hideaway had become a sea of jerseys and half-empty pint glasses, every table arguing over the match like they were on the payroll. jojo , naturally , was in the middle of it. " you literally don't know what the fuck you're yapping about , yeah ? " she fired back , beer in hand. “ you're blaming harry kane for dropping deep when england can't progress the ball through midfield. what's he supposed to do , stand up there and manifest a goal ? ” the guy across the bar scoffed. “ you're talking out of your ass. ” the bartender looked up from drying a glass , already grinning. " alright , " he called. “ if the commentators say she's right , first round's on me. ”
“ deal. ” seconds later , the broadcast analyst echoed jojo's exact point. the entire bar erupted. the bartender groaned dramatically before reaching for a row of pint glasses. “ god damn it. ” jojo smirked , “ man of your word , ” she reminded him with a satisfied smile. he slid two fresh drinks across the counter. jojo scooped them up before turning back toward her company , one glass extended in their direction. " there you go , " she said with an unapologetically smug grin. " you're welcome. "
the scene was amusing to edie. in no way would she sit there and pretend she knew the ins and outs of football, the worldly kind, not american, she'd gleaned enough over the years to understand the basics however. the younger woman's passion and her spitfire nature was something edie admired, especially when it came to the way she argued with men who always assumed they knew better than a woman.
❝ thank you. ❞ the corners of her mouth pull a smile and her fingers press around the cold pint glass. edie leans back further into her chair, her attention shifting from the screens to jojo. ❝ you clearly weren't wrong but don't you find it difficult to get into such a corrupt game? ❞ while edie couldn't fully agree that it was all scripted like some people claimed, she had noticed how blatant the referees were ruling the games. ❝ i'm not sure i'll be able to act surprised or celebrate when argentina wins it all. ❞

harley had worn the same smug grin all evening , the kind that usually meant he was either about to do something stupid or had already done it and was waiting to see who noticed first. he was sprawled across a picnic bench, one boot hooked beneath the seat, absently picking at the label of a beer bottle when something shifted beneath the collar of his white t-shirt. a tiny leopard gecko poked its head out from the neckline. harley caught the inevitable double take and immediately lifted a hand in surrender. “ whoa, whoa — don't freak out! ” as if on cue, the little lizard climbed a little farther onto his shoulder, blinking at the world with complete indifference. harley grinned. " he's friendly. promise. " he reached up to let the gecko crawl onto his fingers before holding him up with unmistakable pride. “ this is my son , beau jr. ” the name was delivered with a perfectly straight face , as though introducing a family member at a backyard barbecue was the most normal thing in the world.
❝ why would i freak out? ❞ she's hoping her eyes aren't as wide as saucers. ❝ clearly you're comfortable and ok with that... ❞ winter hadn't been suspecting that the little reptile was a pet, so her mouth parts a little when his fingers reach up for the tiny gecko to climb onto. at the introduction, she laughs a little, a sound that's a mix of her confusion and amusement. ❝ wait... did you name him after your brother? how does the jr part work? ❞
briefly, winter looks around, takes in the people and the food on grills, then lets her attention land back onto harley. ❝ aren't you worried about losing him out here? ❞
★ ˖ ⊹ 𝑜𝑝𝑒𝑛 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑟 | character selection: russell boone.
↳ 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 … the hideaway, evening.
rust sat at the far end of the bar , where the lights gave up trying to reach and the shadows settled in easy. his fingers drummed a slow , absent rhythm against the side of his glass , the amber whiskey inside barely disturbed. he'd ordered it nearly twenty minutes ago , yet only a sip had gone missing. the low murmur of conversation , the occasional burst of laughter , the clink of bottles behind the counter — they all blurred into distant noise , leaving him alone with whatever thoughts had followed him through the door.
then came that familiar feeling. the subtle shift in the room. the quiet certainty that someone had stopped just behind him. rust didn't look up right away. instead , his thumb traced the rim of the glass , rough calluses scraping softly against the crystal as though the answer might be waiting there. only after a beat did his voice break the silence , low and gravel-worn. “ you plannin' on standin' there all night , or you gonna sit down ? ” he finally glanced over his shoulder , one brow lifting with the faintest hint of dry amusement. “ ain't much point in lurkin' when the bar's got plenty of empty seats. ”
call her old fashioned, edie washed her hands before she makes her way out of the bathroom and before she secures herself a seat at the bar. usually she enjoys her drinks, maybe a cigar, on her back patio. along with a sunset and then the starry, moonlit sky where the sounds of the night took over. tonight, after working late and just departed from the office, the ambiance and bustle of a place like the hideaway calls to her more than the crickets just beyond where the light doesn't reach. the buzzing phone in her bag prompts her to pull it free and peer at the screen. it's bright in the mood lighting and she squints at it as she quietly sighs and declines the call.
❝ i'm waiting on your manners and you pulling a chair for me. ❞ light and airy, a hint of teasing, edie moves closer to the bar, a few seats away so that her eyes can wander the labels of the good spirits without retrieving her glasses and so she's not crowding someone giving off every indication he wants to be alone. a look russell's way, she doesn't scrutinize him, edie focuses on his drink. ❝ is that just for show, or are you waiting for someone to buy you something better? ❞
" listen . i think i'm probably the local expert on this , just so you know . n' my mom used to read tea leaves , which i feel is a bit more subjective than tarot ! just trust me ." having felt a sudden stroke of inspiration , silver has pulled out the tarot deck she keeps at the ready in her overfilled purse . call it generosity , call it delusion , but she's decided the person in front of her needs a reading now , on the house . " . . . oh . . . i see . . . hm , that's interesting . . . "
whether they're into it or not , silver doesn't care — she's too busy chewing upon her lower lip , brow furrowed slightly as she takes in the spread of three cards before her . “ five of cups . . . queen of wands . . . oh ! the devil . my oh my , ” silver's eyes flick up to meet theirs , brow raised , waiting as though they both know what this means .
” . . . okay , let me ask you this . maybe tmi , but the cards are saying it , not me . " silver leans forward towards them , speaks softly , " are you , like . . . gettin' it on ? got a ticket to pound town ? getting cracked , as the kids say ? like . . . the cards are saying either you're having really good sex these days , or you're about to . " she finds herself intrigued , hands reaching to shuffle the deck again . . . lord knows she could use some tlc herself . " hm . very curious , indeed ! "
in the midst of emptying a raw sugar packet into her latte, winter glances over with a curious gaze. full lips shift into amusement as her eyes follow each card set down face up. ❝ i never understood reading tea leaves. ❞ words light, without judgement or negativity, a shoulder rises and falls as she makes conversation. not well versed in tarot yet knowing some leaves her skeptical while still entertaining it.
something humorless nearly snorts out of her. the five of cups? yeah, that absolutely tracks. then she's lost on the second card and even shakes her head at it. that can't be right. the devil card rounding the reading out at the end is when she decides this likely isn't for her. ❝ maybe you're picking up on someone else's energy, or... the cards are. i can't see how this is for me. ❞
blending in the sugar with a few circular motions of her wrist, her cheeks dust a darker shade of pink. she tosses the wooden stirrer in the nearby bin and shakes her head at what's being insinuated. apparently by her spirit guides coming through on these tarot cards. ❝ yeah, not me... you're definitely reading someone else. ❞ looking around winter tips her chin at another young woman openly flirting with a male shopping around at the mugs on display. ❝ probably her... ❞
✦ after a relaxing morning swim in the pool mackenna had one plan left before she had to think about the content she'd be posting for the ranch that day. and that line of thought brought her to the door of the steam room. a love that she had always had, stepping into the steam filled room relieved the youngest whitney girl of any stress that plagued her body. if she could have she would have spent a far longer time than one should in a steam room. as her hand reaches for the door she spots the other in the corner of her eye. " will you be joining me in the steam room this morning? "
some days edie considered she might have actually found the key to staying youthful and feeling her best and most refreshed. cold plunge and sauna. at least once a week. the scandinavians really knew how to take care of body and mind, she'd give them that.
at the voice she glanced up from her phone, screw driver cocktail in the other hand. ❝ absolutely. i just came from a swim and this is always the best way to finish it off. ❞ though, her hair wasn't wet, under her robe she did adorn a one piece suit.
❝ after you, ms whitney. ❞ iphone slipped into the pocket of her robe, edie gestured to the door. ❝ unless you want the room to yourself... i could find another. ❞
⋆ ⭒˚。 [ ashley moore, woman, she/her, russell boone's youngest daughter wc. ] was that winter boone i just saw over at amber lounge? you know, the twenty six year old clerk at old fox books + university student that’s been around willow glen for 25 years. people around town say they can somehow both be avoidant and perceptive, but if you were to ask them they’d probably say they’re more like a paradox in motion, trauma carried around like her shadow and grief as if made of her bones, a thin rim of candle wax clinging to the bottom of the jar, untamed curls, faded denim, and scuffed boots. the town sure has been rumbling about them lately, apparently they have denied contact with her birth mother … but who knows if that’s true, i guess i’ll just have to stop by willow heights and find out!
trigger warnings: adoption, foster care, cancer, death, age gap relationship
there's been an ache; a ribbon of loneliness through her chest that's always felt undefinable. sat there without permission or true reason. winter grew up loved and provided for, in a home with two parents and older siblings, yet something always felt slightly out of reach. up until she opened her adoption file winter knew nothing of where she'd come from or her ethnicity, why she was such a stark contrast to the beautiful family that took her in when her mother had given her up. the agency asked if she wanted to track down her mother, told her it was completely normal to seek out her identity, and some six years after asking for the file winter has still said no.
adopted before she'd turned a year old, winter has no memories of her birth mother or the foster care she spent time in when she'd been abandoned by an older teenager in a hospital. all she's known is the warmth rosemary offered, more love and affection that she never had to beg for, and the protection and stability russell provided. as a child she'd been quiet with want, innately knowing she'd been taken in by the boones by the grace of god. she played, she read, she wrote, she explored, feeling safe and secure enough to do so. even if she didn't carry the resemblance of her family, winter knew she belonged there.
on the outside, more like her father, russell, than not — stoic, stubborn, reticent, guarded — winter always had a special bond with him. maybe it was a quiet understanding between dispositions that recognized like, or he had finally learned the ins and outs of fatherhood by his fourth child. she too shutdown when her mother, rosie, became sick with cancer. the fast progression of it ripping her heart out of her chest, and perhaps the first realization of winter understanding that her life may be marked by loss. at the time she'd been at north texas university, a good student, apart of a few clubs, and left before ever finishing her degree. though, that wasn't permanent.
loss broke something loose inside of winter. the rebellion was quiet, secret almost, as she put on a brave face of managing grief and what she unfairly felt as abandonment. a wound she'd maybe been born with being pressed upon. everything had become uncertain for her following that. losing her mother felt like losing her center of gravity, and she couldn't fathom burdening her father who she could see was in the depths of hell with his own grief. while she closed out most of the world, winter opened up to the person who was doing the same. seeing her father simply go through the motions of life made her think she could save him herself by simply moving.
for her, the way through it had been turning her father's ear into something of a confessional. maybe a sounding board. which classes should she try at university? what was the path for a writer? should she think of publishing? and maybe the scariest and most raw of should she meet her birth mother. the agency, after she'd inquired years ago, had reached out that she was being sought after. winter had never really felt the need or that she had the space or capacity to have those questions answered. would her parents think her ungrateful or that she hadn't been given enough?
working in old fox books since she had started university, she's poured over pages that delve into that topic. fiction or non, seeking whether anyone was ever the better for it or came out feeling more fulfilled. though, it's not just that. being surrounded by brilliance and creativity has encouraged winter into her own drafts and ideas. the confidence to be a writer aiming for publishing isn't there yet, so she daydreams about being the person to help others with their literary goals.
life marred by loss has shaped her, made her fear deep connections, given that they're things she cares too deeply for that she could lose some day.

⋆ ⭒˚。[ michelle pfeiffer, woman, she/her, muse i. ] was that meredith "edie" morgan i just saw over at canyon valley country club? you know, the sixty five year old real estate developer that’s been around willow glen for her entire life. people around town say they can somehow both be reticent and pragmatic, but if you were to ask them, they’d probably say they’re more like taillights disappearing over the horizon, perfume on pulse points, the dregs of whiskey at the bottom of a glass, an ashtray filled with red stained cigarette butts, holding on far longer than sanity can afford. the town sure has been rumbling about them lately, apparently they were never officially married to their late husband … but who knows if that’s true, i guess i’ll just have to stop by redbud manor and find out!
there's no real freedom when born into a legacy. the future and trajectory of your life is already set out for you. that was somehow understood by meredith morgan at a young age. the first born of the five total children her parents would have, both blood and adopted, her father let her know this would all rest on her one day. edie, as she was affectionately called, was given this responsibility and burden when she was just a child. from then on her life carried on to shape and mold her into hands capable of holding an empire.
what that meant was very little childhood. there were chores, responsibilities, looking after younger siblings, all while obtaining excellence in school and any extracurriculars her parents had loaded onto a too full social calendar. as the heir to the morgan throne she had to be seen as the embodiment of her mother's class and her father's sharp business acumen. it meant her childhood and formative years were structured and incredibly lonely.
the only time edie left the morgan's ivory tower in willow glen for an extended period of time was to earn three degrees from yale. business, history, and comparative literature. eventually those undergraduate degrees led to a law degree and she returned home from new england to impress her father, working under him until he passed and the empire became her duty and onus. it was around that time there was a wedding between edie and her "husband", a man she'd met and had a relationship with since her junior year of university.
on the outside the marriage appeared completely legitimate, but what no one knew was that there was no actual marriage certificate signed. there were legal documents, a contract, sure, but edie never took his last name for more reason than one. despite it being something of a business transaction, a move on a giant chess board, there was love between edie and the man regarded as her spouse. they even had two sons together and both work for the conglomerate that is the morgan imperium.
nearly two years ago her ten years older "husband", aleksandr, passed away from heart disease. his extramarital affairs came to light privately, something she'd purposefully remained ignorant to through the years yet had to face when her sons were confronted with the reality of who their father really was. it's just another thing to add to new concerns as edie comes to terms with aging, with legacy, those vying for succession, and what all matters in the end. desperate for rest and for finally finding herself, edie largely doesn't care and sometimes thinks of throwing it all away.
