✦  it's  not  missed  as  mackenna  makes  her  way  around  the  lake  on  a  paddle  board.  the  sound  of  the  water  splashing  as  someone  near  her  goes  overboard  from  their  vessel  and  into  the  water.  watching  the  other  struggle  is  something  that  she  knows  she  should  not  be  doing,  but  it's  hard  to  not  look  at  the  commotion  happening  just  a  mere  few  feet  away  from  her.  as  she  makes  her  way  closer  to  the  other  in  the  water  she  could  not  have  expected  the  snap  from  the  other.  "  i  was  going  to  offer  you  a  hand,  but  if  you  really  want  me  to  leave  i  can  leave  you  be.  "  she  admits  as  she  averts  her  eyes  from  the  other.  "  i  don't  know  if  you'll  be  able  to  get  back  in  the  canoe  from  the  water,  but  i  could  tow  it  back  to  shore.  "

" oh, i'm not rooting for anyone. " a poor, old sap sat at the bar in frank's, still the same place where they had their first drink seven years ago. teddy hasn't focused on the game for the last thirty minutes, instead cheering when everyone else in the restaurant would and booed when they did too. " i'm more of a contact sport kinda person, " he chuckles quietly at his own words while taking a sip of heineken and turning their full attention to the person next to him. ✦  sports  wasn't  something  that  mackenna  admittedly  went  out  of  her  way  to  watch.  apart  from  the  sport  of  showing  horses,  that  was  the  only  one  that  she  followed  religiously.  yet  the  youngest  of  the  whitney  family  had  found  herself  sitting  at  the  bar  in  franks  with  a  glass  while  the  rest  of  the  patrons  were  cheering  on  the  games  broadcasted  on  the  screens.  "  if  you're  not  cheering  for  anyone  then  who  exactly  are  you  cheering  for  when  you're  joining  everyone  else  cheering?  "  she  poses  the  question  to  the  other  after  hearing  them  cheer  with  the  crowd  in  the  bar.  "  admittedly  the  only  sport  i  have  followed  is  the  sport  of  horse  shows,  if  that  even  counts.  "  she  replies  before  taking  a  sip  of  the  cocktail  in  her  glass.  "  who's  even  playing?  i  wouldn't  even  know  who  to  bet  for.  "

               ★    there's   a   softness   to   his   eyes   that   isn't   usually   there   and   the   faintest   of   smiles   on   his   face   as   he   runs   his   hand   along   the   shoulder   blade   of   the   bull   —   affectionately   named   venom   the   day   he   showed   up   to   the   ranch   as   a   calf   .   leon's   inside   the   bull   pen   ,   free   of   the   fear   and   inhibitions   that   should   be   telling   him   to   stay   on   the   other   side   of   the   fence   .   “   if   anyone's   in   danger   here   ,   it's   me   .   ”   he   says   ,   head   turning   towards   the   person   standing   an   amusing   distance   away   from   the   pen   .   “   you   can   even   pet   him   ,   just   .   .   .   make   sure   he   can   see   me   when   you   do   .   ”

✦  large  animals  on  a  ranch  were  not  something  that  mackenna  had  ever  been  afraid  of,  but  the  idea  of  climbing  into  the  pen  of  a  bull  was  not  her  ideal  way  to  relax.  it  wasn't  hard  to  see  the  way  that  the  other  melted  being  that  close  to  an  animal  that  can  be  entirely  dangerous.  "  i  wasn't  arguing  that  you  were  any  safer  than  i.  "  the  female  replies  with  a  shake  of  her  head.  the  urge  to  reach  out  and  run  her  hand  across  the  expanse  of  sleek  hairs  on  the  bulls  skin  is  something  that  she  fights.  "  i  think  i  will  survive  without  petting  him.  i  have  plenty  of  animals  that  i  can  turn  to  that  i  have  built  relationships  with.  "
