What I notice in a lot of modern books I read (and DNF) is the lack of attention to small details.
Before smartphones and social media, authors were more attentive. Thatâs why their worlds and characters felt real, because they were watching the real world around them.
Authorsâput your phone down. Sit still. Watch.
Watch the shadow of a bird sweep across a building as it flies past. The way a beam of light bends into perfect circles on the glass. The dried splatter of a drink on the floor.
And then write. Because the world is already writing poetry, you just have to listen.
Iâve been thinking this for a while in the back of my mind but seeing formed into words I am baffled. Iâll definitely start doing more of that, thank you so much
he would not fucking say that, but with disability.. he would not fucking be able bodied. sick n tired of characters walking away from multiple life changing injuries without a scratch. letâs get some natural consequences in here.
give that knife/sword fight survivor nerve damage. give the character who was shot in the gut a stoma. give that fire survivor lung damage and an oxygen cannula. give that leg injury survivor a cane. give that starvation survivor gastroparesis. give that spinal injury survivor a manual chair or powerchair.
while weâre at it, give your characters congenital disabilities too, just because. give them intellectual and development disabilities. give them acquired and postviral illnesses. dare to make somebody bedbound. for me.
You have the power to shape worlds, and the monsters are scared of you.

Write it badly or it'll never be written
Write it badly or it'll never be written
Write it badly or it'll never be written
Write it badly or it'll never be written
Write it badly or it'll never be written
the worst thing about writing or any kind of craft is having an idea you're really excited to make a reality but then you sit down and realize how much work it's going to take to get to that point and suddenly you feel like those two little gay guys in the mountain in the lord of the rings
do you remember how good it was in our head mr frodo
what they don't tell you about writing is that you're gonna spend way more time moving those guys across a room than you ever thought you would
my toxic trait as a writer is that Iâll be like âI have free time. I am going to write right nowâ and then I. donât

It's a pain in the ass, but it's my pain in the ass!

Absolutnie kocham tÄ wizjÄ, ktoĹ powinien to kiedyĹ napisaÄ
My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.
I don't remember where I saw this piece of advice so I can't credit it, unfortunately
But it was along the lines of "instead of asking whether something is out of character, ask 'what would it take for this character to do this'"
Which I think fits really nicely with this advice of making the actual action itself also feel in character
writer brain is like âwhat if this story was a metaphor for griefâ
no babes what if this story was finished first
What if the real grief was the writing we didn't do along the way

A recent cartoon for Guardian Books.
TRUTH. What you need is imagination, and you donât need to go anywhere to use it.
Yeah, sure, seeing new things is helpful as a fantasy writer. But. Donât make the mistake of assuming that exposure to new things is the same as traveling. You know what else exposes you to new things? The internet. Documentaries. Books. Freaking Youtube. So when youâre bored of cats and cooking tutorials, go on an adventure!
You wanna write create some fantasy creatures but donât know where to start? Go check out some videos The Weird Creatures Earth has Had.
Want some inspiration for your Super Evil Villainâs Villanous Deeds?
Or maybe you want some weird locations to kick start your Fantasy World Terraforming?
Or maybe you need knowledge of bunches of historical places and cities and cultures?
But maybe youâre basing fantasy on the modern world?
Okay but lets say you want to start from the same inspiration as GRRM? (and part two!)
Thatâs just the stuff I could quickly grab. Things Iâm subscribed to, that I know offhand. There is So. Much. Stuff. Online.
The best thing about the internet is that it means its not just the fortunate sons that get to learn, and explore and imagine and write. We get to see stories from all over the place, from all sorts of people, who bring All Kinds of New Ideas.
I like you.
