I would like to be pithy on tumblr but I have decided to write three chapters of a webfic today. They are short, but they will use up all my words.
One done. Two to go. (Let's not talk about how long this is taking. This day just gets to be more than 24 hours, oK?? 😭)
Hello and welcome to day 2 of one day of writing. 🤡
Okay so they were not short. They are 2, not 3.
But they are done, and edited, and I can go nap now.
A chapter a day is a pretty good weekend! 🥳
If you are feeling lost, write.
If you are feeling uninspired, read.
If you are feeling alone, step out and listen. A voice out there is waiting for you.
Sometimes, when for whatever reason, there's no motivation or interest in continuing to write an ongoing story, the only solution is to literally just get back into it and write.
Sometimes the only way is to push passed the dread, the anxiety, the irritation and immerse yourself into that au again.
A lot of the time this actually helps me fall back in love with a story I've lost interest in writing.
Oh no, I've found another annotated book. Oh no, it has the captured heart and hopes of another reader. Oh no, it's mangled and loved and worn from use. Oh no it's clinging to my hand... it's following me to the checkout queue... oh noooooo.....

Step 1: Log out of tumblr
Step 2: Write
Ok, but do I have to??
Step 1: Log out of tumblr
Step 2: Write
Half of this can be solved with chocolate.
listen i may take 4 weeks to write a 3k word chapter, and i may take 45 minutes to decide whether i should use “laugh” or “chuckle”, but at least i don’t use ai and whatever you’re getting is pure chaos from a human brain
For all the readers/writers out there who enjoy both, any tips on how to enjoy reading books without comparing them to the one you’re writing?
I don’t mean writing level because I’m confident in how I write and remember “don’t compare someone’s last draft to your first.” But I’m currently writing a fantasy/romance, and when I read that genre, I can’t help but feel inferior to the magic systems, plots, world building, and characters that I’m reading about. Kind of like “why would anyone read my simplified world when there’s others like this out there?”
I find it hard to enjoy well written fantasy/romance books because I’m jealous of them, which sucks cause I love them.
How do y’all balance reading and writing the same genre?
I have an ugly answer which may very well not work for you (or may work better on future projects).
I never stop comparing myself. I compare my writing to everything I read and consume, and I let it fuel me.
When I feel a work is better than my own, I sit in that bitter pool of jealousy and I examine the reasons for it like a bug. Why am I jealous? Why do I think this writing is better? Is it the dialogue, characterization, worldbuilding, marketing etc? I find the things I like better in their work, and then I try to replicate them. I practice dialogue when I think I'm bad at it (this was the one most recently) or change the pacing of what I'm working on... the list goes on. I treat the jealously like the want it is. I want my work to be as clever, or complex, or what-have-you as what I'm reading, so I use the negative emotion to force myself to practice it.
When the writing is worse I let myself feel superior (momentarily). I look at how much I have improved, how I used to be this terrible/boring too and mwahaha I am now slightly better! I'm growing! If the work is still more popular/valued/profitable than my own, I try to evaluate why (is it luck? is it reach? what is this author doing right?) and remember that if even this nonsense can do well, I can too!
The key is reading both. Give yourself a broad range of material, both "good" and "bad." When there's too much good in the reading list, you start feeling small. When there's too much bad, you start losing the drive to grow. It's like balancing your diet - too much of any one thing becomes a hard time, but a little of everything makes life better.

Daily reminder for historical writers:
Every time you see a post about what people "actually" did in 1805, or 1428, or 624 they're talking about rich people.
Every time a post tells you people were not hooking up, or having children outside of marriage, or getting married but only for a bit they're talking about rich people.
Every time a post tells you about some arbitrary social custom that "everyone did" THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT RICH PEOPLE.
I don't know about you, but my life looks very different than the life of yacht people. Use this information as you will.
I used to wish the love I found in books was real. Then I realized it is. I gift it to myself every time I pick up my own pen.
