1. Dreams of a Life (2011)

This documentary tells the story of Joyce Carol Vincent, whose body was found in January 2006, decomposing in her bed in Wood Green, North London. She apparently died unnoticed in December 2003, surrounded by unopened Christmas presents with her TV still turned on. The film interviews various friends, acquaintances, and former partners to try to tell the story of Joyce.

2. The Cheshire Murders (2013)

This film studies the murder-robbery case that occurred on July 23, 2007. Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters were raped and murdered, while her husband, Dr. William Petit, was injured during a home invasion in Cheshire, Connecticut. This case was referred to as “possibly the most widely publicized crime in the state’s history.”

3. Child of Rage (1992)

The film is based on the true story of Beth Thomas, who suffered from severe behavioral problems as a result of being sexually abused as a child. Beth was adopted after it was found that she was being sexually abused by a family member. During her stay with the family, she tried to kill her brother several times and even attempted to sexually abuse him. The film was shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. 

4. The Imposter (2012)

This documentary is about the 1997 case of the French confidence trickster Frédéric Bourdin, who impersonated Nicholas Barclay, a Texas boy who disappeared at the age of 13 in 1994. The film includes interviews with Bourdin and members of Barclay’s family, as well as actual television news footage

5. Cropsey (2009)   

This film initially begins as an examination of “Cropsey”, a boogeyman-like figure from the New York urban legend, before segueing into the story of Andre Rand, a convicted child kidnapper from Staten Island.

6. The Bridge (2006)

This film covers the depressing truth about the Golden Gate Bridge, capturing a large number of suicides during the documentary.The film also features interviews with family and friends of some of the identified people who had thrown themselves from the bridge that year. The Golden Gate Bridge, which first opened in May 1937, was the most popular suicide site in the world during the documentary’s filming, with approximately 1,200 deaths by 2003

7. There’s Something Wrong With Aunt Diane (2011)

This documentary discusses the traffic collision that occurred on July 26, 2009,  where eight people were killed when a minivan driven by 36-year-old Diane Schuler, after traveling 1.7 miles in the wrong direction on the parkway, collided head-on with an oncoming SUV. The deaths included Schuler, her daughter and three nieces, and the three passengers in the SUV. The crash was the worst fatal motor vehicle accident to occur in Westchester County, New York. 

8. Capturing the Friedmans (2003)

This film focuses on the 1980s investigation of Arnold Friedman and his son Jesse for child molestation of several of their students. They held computer classes in their home where many children attended. During police interviews, some of the children that the Friedman’s taught reported experiencing bizarre sex games during their computer classes. Arnold Friedman committed suicide in prison in 1995, leaving a $250,000 life insurance benefit to his son. Jesse Friedman was released from New York’s Clinton Correctional Facility in 2001 after serving 13 years of his sentence.

9. Night & Fog (1955)

This documentary depicts the cruel reality of the Nazi Concentration camps. The film features footage from the liberation of camps in 1945 where malnourished humans are seen emerging out of the camps, voicing the life left in their lungs on to the camera.

10. Brothers Keeper (1992)

This documentary follows the case of Delbert Ward, an illiterate 59-year-old dairy farmer who was accused of murdering his brother Bill, in the bed that they shared for 50 years. The Ward brothers were four bachelors ranging between 59-71 and living in extreme poverty. One theory suggests that the slain brother, Bill, suffered the consequence of a sexual act gone wrong. What’s more disturbing is the fact that he was later acquitted of the crime after it was found out that the New York State Police coerced a confession out of him as he was illiterate.

My 2 brain cells:

Columbiner's are basically a subculture of the Internet at this point, and to some people it's not bothersome, but to some it is. I'm going to go through both sides of the story, including my own biased side and opinion (woohoo I know, but hear me out). We're going to look at the "good" influence, the bad influence and the other "pro's and con's" you could unprofessionally say.

Columbine has seemingly had a weird impact on kids born in the 2000's, to the point where it's almost fiction for us. I was born in 2003, and sometimes I even forget the reality of the situation. It really isn't the event, but more about the perpetrators, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Many people don't really have a clue about the victims, or the time it took for the rampage to end, and usually just focus on the minds of Harris and Kebold. Albeit very interesting, sometimes it can have some negative affects on those who get too deep into their minds, and how they functioned.

First, let's look at the side that makes it.... A bit sketchy.... First and foremost, let me remind you I am NOT pointing fingers or saying that every Columbiner does these things. One of the things many of these people do is condone the actions of these sprees, and the violence behind it. The "age demographic" behind these events are usally early teens to twenty (20) years old (except Lynn Ann-). Young minds are susceptible to engrossing themselves in something to the point where it could make them think "well it isn't all that bad." I, unfortunately am one of these people. Of course, I don't condone violence, but to some extent I look at events like that and say to myself "this is tragic, but to what extent?" "If this were to happen to me, would I really care?" When it got to that point, I started to question whether or not I should participate in the research I do and try to put another case in place, oe find something entirely new. A second point is most people who are interested in (or more into) Columbine are teenagers with depression and/or anxiety disorders. It's easy to look at Harris and Klebold and realise the psychological problems they had, and relate them to your own, as they were both teenagers suffering from suicidal depression (we'll get back to this later, too). In some cases, "mentally unfit" teens are easily pushed off the edge, and if they see someone they've idolized do something that they are possibly capable of, they might do it (i.e: Kurt Cobain's "suicide" caused many teenagers/young adults to commit suicide). If these people have that certain "idolization" mindset on these two, it could cause someone to go off the wall, committing suicide or committing harm to another person. Sol Pais is an example of a mentally disturbed person who idolized Eric, and committed suicide to (allegedly) be with him. Another example is Vladislov Roslakav, who shot up his college, which people speculated (or well known now) was heavily inspired by the Columbine Massacre, and moreEric Harris than anything else. Also, during adolescents, ideals* are very easily grasped onto with really no final thought. (*i.e: religion, government, and many others) The ideals that Dylan had are very appealing, and show a sense of comfort by making your own heaven, called a "halcyon." Where the ideals of Eric are very robust, since he was a neo-nazi, and into survival of the fittest, or "Natural Selection." Both waver in concepts, but to a young mind wanting to be more like the one they idolize, they could not know what they're getting themselves into. Now if I told you what I believed in, it'd be a mouthful, and very contradicting. No one knows who or what they are as teenagers, and that's normal. Ideals can be plastered on like a label, and sometimes that's what happens.

Now, onto the other side, or the more "positive" side to all of this. Some Columbiner's have done their research and stepped foot into what actually happened rather than the two, though this is a bit rare, some are able to grasp the concept that this is a reality. Many can keep it on the downlow, and that's usually what happens unless you purposely dig down in the depths of the tcc and try and find those people.Now sliding to a point that I made earlier, it's a natural human response to empathize with someone that had the same "traits" as you. Many people find great comfort in the fact that Dylan and Eric may share the same mental illness and feelings as them, it also shows them that they really aren't alone in this stance, and make them feel better mentally. Though it's not a good example, people find it better than nothing to realise what they have is also what another may have. Some people have said that it boosts the way they feel about themselves, and makes them less suicidal. I am one of these people. In a way, it also helps people understand their own brain better, and may lead to them seaking help and speaking with a professional about how they feel. Someone like Lynn Ann or Sol Pais find a comfort in these two, and if that makes them happy then so be it. Though, those aren't very good examples, try to realise that many people don't want to cause any harm or make someone feel scared or like they'll attack them. Personal preference is personal preference, and if they aren't hurting anyone, it shouldn't be that big of a deal. Another point to add is many people take time to consider the victims on the anniversaries, whether they condone or not, people come together on 4/20 to commemorate the victims.

Now on to the huge debate that really makes people mad at "Columbiner's." Sexualization and romanticization. These two are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from glorification, idolization, and condoning behavior. Psychiatrists have said, and even my psychiatrist has said that there is nothing wrong with sexualizing or romanticizing people, whether they are a murderer or not. It's human nature. You cannot help whether you find someone attractive or even sexually attractive. The biggest problem people seem to have is with the romanticizing aspect of these people, when in reality it is teenage hormones, not a mental problem.

The disappearance of Anthonette Cayedito has ‘’tragedy’’ written all over it, due to the fact that she had tried to reach out for help years after her abduction, but, alas, nobody was able to rescue her from captivity. Anthonette was only 9-years-old when she went missing from her home in Gallup, New Mexico, where she lived with her mother and younger sister. On April 6, 1986, at approximately 3AM, there was a sudden knock on the door. The girls were still awake, although their mother was asleep. Anthonette, initially cautious, approached the entrance and inquired who was on the other side. The mysterious visitor identified themselves as ‘’Uncle Joe’’. Anthonette may have thought that this person was actually her Uncle Joe, the man married to her aunt, but when she opened the door, she was immediately seized by two unknown men. Anthonette’s younger sister watched in horror as her older sister kicked about and screamed to be let go, but she was unable to get a good enough glimpse at the captors’ faces. Anthonette was loaded into a brown van and never seen again. The following morning, when her mother went to wake up her two children for Bible school, she was alarmed to find her daughter missing and called the police. 

It would take a year until Anthonette was heard from again. The first time was when the Gallup Police Department received a call from a girl who identified herself as none other than Anthonette Cayedito. She told them that she was currently located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Before she could give them more information about her exact whereabouts, a grown man’s voice could be heard in the background yelling, ‘’Who said you could use the phone?’’ The girl screamed in terror, and sounds consistent with a scuffle was audible on the other line before the call was terminated. 

The second attempt for help would be made four years later at a restaurant in Carson City, Nevada. A waitress spotted a teenage girl who matched Anthonette’s description in the company of an unkempt couple. The girl appeared to be trying to get the waitress’ attention, such as by repeatedly knocking her utensils to the floor and tightly squeezing her hand everytime the waitress handed them back to her. When the trio left the restaurant, the waitress found a napkin under the girl’s plate which had two spine-chilling messages scrawled across it: Help me and Call the police.
