Y'ALL I finally found a reasoned argument against being able to bring e-bikes into the forest. I am unreasonably happy about it.
Image ID: A bluesky post by Robert Event @iwriteok:
"one of the most dangerous truths of the modern era is this:
all evidence-backed "wellness" and "life-extension" tactics are just basic diet and exercise. Most people have very little they can do to impact their longevity besides regularly go to the doctor and get vaccinated, etc
you have almost nothing to gain from spending money on self-help or body optimization books and courses. most supplements and health topics are bogus. but universal healthcare would meaningfully extend your probably lifespan.
some people react really violently to this idea. this is generally because they take offense at the prospect of being out of control in their lives."
The key to this, though, is the "basic diet and exercise." Wider wellness culture is bullshit. You cant optimize your health. You can, however, engage in healthy habits that can address some health concerns.
Eat whole foods
Do cardio
Lift weights
And there are things that can be done to address community health, as well, including walkable cities, adjusted grocery stores, things of that nature. What is being said in these tweets is not "there is nothing you can do to benefit your health" but that there are limited things you can do that will address your health, but optimization will not happen.
Stop saying "eating disorders" when you mean *restrictive* eating disorders. Not all eating disorders are restrictive.
Stop forgetting about binge eating disorder, night eating syndrome, pica disorder, and gourmand syndrome. They are eating disorders too.
Also, PLEASE start including orthorexia amongst restrictive eating disorders. Orthorexia is a HIGHLY neglected condition in psychology BECAUSE IT DIRECTLY CALLS OUT DIET CULTURE, and how diets are bullshit.*
Orthorexia Nervosa causes a person to become obsessed with eating "healthy" food. What they consider to be "healthy" can vary between each person, and they treat certain foods as "clean" and "dirty."
Their diets either consist of eating far too little food (ie; only eating one meal a day, or eating meals that are so small that they don't sustain them), or leaving out important food groups (ie; lacking food that has protein.)
*(Disclaimer: Diets to cut out allergens/food triggers, to be more environmentally friendly, for religious beliefs, or for body building are fine ONLY if they include REPLACEMENTS for whatever food groups you're cutting out. Example: If you're cutting out meat, you need to add a new protein in to make up for it. Diets should never be about cutting out entire nutritional groups!)
i think fat liberation conversations and arguments that centre themselve on how fattness is "healthy actually" are ultimately misguided.
Skinny people often use the arguement that they have the right to be fatphobic towards people wjo are overweight because they are trying to encourage them to 'be healthy". so it's understandable that the kneejerk reaction is to disprove that, but that's not the point. the point is bodily autonomy. point is that being overweight shouldn't get you killed the medical industry. the point is that fattness shouldn't get individuals ostrisised from communities, or being forced to expain themselves. fat people should be allowed to be happy with their bodies without being fetishised or demeaned or treated as mentally ill.
originally i was going to end this with a smokers metaphor, we wouldn't slap a lit fag from the lips of a smoker because everyone has the right to bodily autonomy. but I don't want to paint fattness as either inherently ill or healthy because it detracts from my point

I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
I'm out of the disorder and maintaining a good weight, sometimes playing with it as I do different things with my build.
Which I had to put up front because, for all the things that I've changed, I still lowkey think I can survive on protein powder.
Something to keep in mindβ¦. building muscle is so hard people compete to see who can do it best. If youβre a woman worried about βgetting bulkyβ, i promise you that you cannot achieve that physique by accident. Now go lift weights to increase your bone density & protect yourself from osteoporosis and improve your insulin resistence and eat a fiber + protein dense meal with some carbs to refuel and fat for satiety + energy π«΅
MAHA is so funny to me because it's basically, "If you get super healthy, eat the right things, and do the right exercises, you won't need doctors!" And that idea bleeds into fitness/weight loss/health spaces.
I know Western culture has a long history of equating health with morality, but this seems like such a distinctly American idea. The idea that you as an individual can personally defeat cancer, broken bones, dental problems, poor eyesight, and all the medical issues that come from just living long enough.
Even if somebody does eat only junk food, never exercises, and gains so much weight that it destroys their health, you know what that is? A fucking health problem for which someone needs medical intervention. Not a moral failing, not a statement of someone's worthiness as a person.
Keep writing to your representatives about the need for universal healthcare.
If I don't lose weight, then I hate how I look. If I do, then I'm "conforming to the pressure of society."
If I can't, then it's totally okay to be fat, regardless of whether or not that statement is even relevant to the conversation of what I want to be, and if I can't on my own and then use some medicine, then some pretentious pseudointellectual college grad writes a think-piece on how I'm a fucking tragedy for using the tools at my disposal to look how I want to look, pretending that painting me as a victim isn't the same as shaming me.
Body modding in all its forms is in and of itself a human right, being encompassed by bodily autonomy. TREAT IT AS ONE, YOU FUCKS!

They need to invent a type of exercise that doesn't absolutely fucking suck to do.
Is it the exercise that sucks, or is it the way you've been taught to exercise that sucks?
Do you really hate weight training? Or do you hate doing pushups and sit-ups and squats?
Do you really hate cardio? Or do you hate trying to run as fast as you can for as long as you can?
I used to think I hated exercise too. Then I learned that every movement in the world can be modified to suit my level. I can also just not do exercises I hate. I haven't done a sit up in literally ten years. I never go for runs.
I walk and I play and I move heavy objects or manipulate my body weight in ways that feel easy and accessible to my body. I take really long rests and rarely work hard enough to break into a real sweat, and I'm still getting all the benefits. I'm getting way more benefits actually.
When I used to think that exercise had to equal suffering, I rarely ever did it. And there are no benefits in the exercise I won't actually do.
Now I train 3-4 days a week. Gleefully. Because I want to. Because I like it. Because I don't have to do a single exercise I don't enjoy and for every muscle there is to train, there's a ton of options.
Training doesn't have to be intense. Exercise doesn't have to feel like a punishment. There are so many more ways to joyfully move my body than I ever realized, because my grade school PE class taught me that exercise is always misery.
Because it focused on basically five, high level skills that I never learned the foundation to do.
Push-up, pull up, sit up, toe touch, and run
That was my entire "physical education."
And unsurprisingly I walked away believing that exercise is miserable and I just hate it.
Both things turned out to be wildly incorrect, and if you couldn't tell I'm really bitter about it.
*shaking head, chuckling* there goes ol albert stuck in the duality again
fucking hate that fat people feel judged at the gym. reblog if you see a fat person at the gym and think yay! congratulations!! good job! hurray! don't give up! enjoy your life! good vibes to you!!!
i think ive said it before on this blog but god damn
swapping from the sedentary nerd build to the jock build has really highlighted how big the gap in ability between myself and my friends group/past self is
its kind of depressing in multiple ways although im def coming at it from motivated reasoning
i want to invite my friends out to see the cool new stuff that im out there doing but most of them cant even participate at a basic level and then the ones who can are having to pick and choose based on their ability
and it isnt that im upset at them for like "curbing my cool style" or "ruining my fun" or whatever lmao if im on a bike then im having a good time no matter what AND i like to see other people having fun on bikes by any means possible
i still love the rides i can get with some of my friends
but the coolest most fun stuff is the most inaccessible! the coolest trail in the woods where i live is nearly two miles of downhill singletrack and it is so SO fun...
...but nobody i know could even GET to it because the easiest way to reach it is a five mile climb that hangs out around a 5% grade and will spike upwards of 15% at one point
it is literally lonely at the top
i know that like none of these people are gonna read this
but if you were one of the people allllll the way back in the early aughts who was decrying microsoft
you were right the whole time and deserve a giant collective Told You So
