There's a thing in Classics studies where you'll read surviving descriptions of Ancient Greek automata which attribute all manner of near-lifelike behaviour to them – then you look at the reconstructed plans for the automaton in question, and it's a device with roughly the sophistication of a wind-up mouse.

The broad consensus seems to be that the authors of such descriptions are exaggerating for clout. For my part, I look at all the people in the year 2026 who've managed to genuinely convince themselves that LLMs are not only sapient, but smarter than they are, and I think: hmm.

Somehow I keep giving Santi not enough credit on the smartness scale. He speaks at least four languages, is a competent captain in the High Garda (Elite?) with a lifetime contract and, in his own words, is employed as a tactician. Can't be that accomplished if you're stupid.

Unfortunately for Santi he is surrounded by Wolfe (speed-ran postulancy and publishing, should have been Artifex), Khalila (Miss Perfect Entrance Score) and Thomas (builds hugely, world-changingly complicated shit quite casually and understands maths like other people breathe). 😅 Not good company if you want to remind people that you are extremely fucking clever in your own right.

Oh that is such a cruel question!

In no particular order:

A - The Winter Soldier. Even if it didn't have Bucky, it's just a damn good thriller film. But it has Bucky.

B - I'm cheating, the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films. As I said to my friend the other day, they're my greasy pizza films, the ones I watch when I need something that's just fun.

C - Can I cheat again? Spirit and/or Anastasia. My love of musicals started early, once a horse girl always a horse girl, and Dmitri is the best.

I'm currently watching the new series of Daredevil, and Wilson Fisk is played so well.

Hannibal kind of counts as the villain? Either way I love Mads Mikkelson.

And finally Elias Bouchard/Jonah Magnus from The Magnus Archives is a dick and I adore him.
