The thing is that sex scenes actually are incredible ways to explore character. People are at their most vulnerable during sex! The way they have sex says a lot of very interesting things about their desires, obviously, but also their psychology, their vulnerabilities, their hopes and fears, etc. It is completely insane to me to think that sex scenes have no value other than to sexually excite the audience. And even if their only value is to sexual excite the audience - SO WHAT?? A movie is supposed to excite and entertain you! Grow up!!!
It is always so funny to me how people claim that sex scenes do not add anything. When literally half of the shows and movies I can think of have a bunch of action scenes that do not add anything and are clearly only there because of studio mandate. But somehow having a fully unnecessary fight scene is fine. But anything sexual you have to like really defend to be there.
Don't get me wrong: I do love my unnecessary action scenes that are there because it looks cool. I am a simple man.
I just find it so hypocritical that you can have a movie that on 2 hours run time has like 50 minutes of action scenes that move neither the plot or the character arcs along and are the narrative equivalent of jangling keys in front of an easily distracted audience. But if there is like a 3 minute intimate scene that - let's face it - is not even explicit. Then people will go on about how it was "unnecessary".
Honestly thinking of how my own sex life reflects my own character, I can conclusively say that an anime of my own life should include at least one sex scene cuz it gets to show me doing shit like domming people into making positive affirmations about themselves or writing praise all over my girlfriend's body and making her look at herself in the mirror and read out all the compliments I wrote all over her.
I should totally commission someone to make that shit into a comic.
