Sexual orientation - sexuelle Orientierung:
Gay - schwul (is only used for men)
Homosexual - homosexuell (this can be used for men and women)
The prefixes stay the same in German (bi, panā¦) and you simply add āsexuellā or you can use the prefix only - just like you would do in english! So, you could say bisexuell or simply bi, pansexuell or pan etc.
Same-sex - gleichgeschlechtlich
Gender identity - GeschlechtsidentitƤt:
Transgender- transgender (we simply use the english word!)
Nonbinary - nichtbinƤr (or: nicht binƤr)
Hormone therapy - HormontherapieĀ
If we talk about surgery in this context, many people say āGeschlechtsumwandlungā (Gender transformation) orĀ āgeschlechtsangleichende Operationā (gender adjusting surgery).Ā
Intersex - intersexuell (or simply the english word)
Our newly introduced third option on legal documents is called ādiversā (different). Thatās, however, not a word many intersex people would use to identify themselves. Some consider ādiversā a rather offensive choice and would have prefered āintersexuellā. (Nonbinary people are currently not allowed to use this option as you need to prove that your body is not binary).Ā
Pronouns and names - Pronomen und NamenĀ
What about genderneutral pronouns? Sadly, the singularĀ ātheyā doesnāt work in German. Some people switch between Er and Sie, use Es (It) or use neopronouns (like Sier - a combination of Sie and Er). All of these options are rather uncommon and will likely cause a lot of questions by cis german people.Ā
