The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension was released on 10 August 1984.

Earl Mac Rauch had been working on scripts for a character named Buckaroo Bandy since the mid-1970s, but could never complete one. He abandoned the idea and wrote (with Mardik Martin) New York, New York (1977) for Martin Scorsese, which led to a development deal for the newly named character Buckaroo Banzai.

The film (an intelligent, goofy, blend of science fiction, comedy, action-adventure, and music videos) perplexed the studio, who did little to promote it, and released it in a small number of theaters to compete with the likes of Ghostbusters and Star Trek III. It failed to find an audience, despite some good reviews ("hard to top for pure, nutty fun," NY Times).
