"  shit  ,  watch  it  !  "  the  words  toppled  from  her  lips  a  second  too  late  ,  and  for  a  brief  moment  lily  was  sure  this  would  be  fine  —  that  was  ,  of  course  ,  until  the  wand  she'd  pulled  out  in  a  panic  was  bumped  right  out  of  her  hand  ,  flying  into  a  mess  of  rushing  people  and  swirling  robes  .  this  was  .  .  .  this  was  bad  .  oh  ,  fuck  ,  this  was  bad  —  she  was  alone  ,  defenseless  ,  her  wand  was  merlin  knew  where  and  if  this  was  an  attack  ?  she  was  a  sitting  duck  .  people  nudged  and  pushed  ,  and  for  a  moment  the  redhead  simply  stood  there  :  options  rushing  through  her  mind  like  a  frantic  rolodex  .  help  .  she  needed  to  find  someone  who  seemed  trustworthy  and  ask  for  help  .  she  weaved  through  the  crowd  of  wix  ,  the  other  redhead  catching  her  eye  and  instinct  nudging  her  forward  .  "  merlin  ,  sorry  ,  i  —  my  wand's  lost  in  the  crowd  ,  would  you  mind  if  i  stuck  close  to  you  ?  "

"  please  do  ,  and  take  your  time  ,  we  close  at  three  .  well  ,  i've  seen  clothes  hangers  do  it  better  but  alas  ,  who  can  really  compare  to  those  ?  "  a  brow  raised  as  she  rested  her  elbow  on  the  box  ,  the  smile  she  splattered  on  her  face  just  a  tad  ironic  —  she  might  be  more  inclined  to  speak  to  one  sirius  black  ,  but  it  hardly  meant  she'd  let  him  win  .  not  that  they  were  playing  any  sort  of  game  ,  but  as  far  as  lily  evans  was  aware  ?  the  marauders  wouldn't  out  -  quip  her  .  the  day  they  did  ,  would  be  the  day  she  was  dead  on  the  ground  .  "  pays  the  bills  ,  and  tips  well  .  less  chaos  too  ,  which  is  appreciated  .  "  nails  tapped  against  the  cardboard  box  for  a  moment  as  she  studied  the  other  gryffindor  ,  humming  for  a  second  as  she  took  him  in  —  as  well  as  his  offer  .  she  was  here  alone  ,  and  it  was  a  relatively  quiet  night  .  it  helped  that  her  boss  didn't  quite  care  what  she  did  as  long  as  money  was  made  and  patrons  were  happy  ,  so  the  split  decision  she  made  (  and  prayed  wouldn't  regret  immediately  )  was  settled  ,  shrugging  and  pointing  a  thumb  to  the  back  room  .  "  sure  .  there's  more  in  the  back  ,  i'll  buy  you  a  drink  if  y'make  yourself  useful  .  "

"  i've  been  told  .  "  the  even  ,  deadpan  tone  of  voice  was  often  reserved  just  for  him  ,  and  while  usually  lily  wouldn't  stick  around  to  chat  with  one  james  potter  ,  at  the  moment  she  found  herself  without  options  —  she  let  him  talk  ,  just  moving  to  get  the  man  his  pint  and  accidentally  (  well  ,  at  least  it  was  her  excuse  )  spill  some  over  his  sleeve  when  the  glass  was  pushed  his  way  .  "  first  off  ,  i  can't  kick  you  out  —  unfortunately  for  both  of  us  —  and  second  of  all  i  truly  do  appreciate  your  .  .  .  concern  ,  but  i'm  quite  sure  you  can't  surprise  me  anymore  .  your  stupidity  reached  its  peak  a  while  back  ,  now  it's  just  sad  ,  y'know  ?  "  a  raised  brow  punctuated  her  words  and  the  wix  settled  against  the  counter  ,  moving  to  grab  her  discarded  cigarette  and  taking  a  deep  drag  ,  nearly  choking  at  the  mention  of  money  .  of  course  ,  out  of  all  people  in  the  world  ,  he  would  be  the  one  who  would  waltz  in  here  and  offer  her  what  she  could  only  imagine  was  an  idiotic  amount  of  money  to  put  up  with  him  .  it  made  her  gaze  turn  to  james'  face  again  ,  just  a  hint  of  fire  behind  her  eyes  that  she  attempted  to  quiet  with  a  long  exhale  ,  the  urge  to  put  her  cigarette  out  on  him  a  little  too  overwhelming  for  comfort  .  "  don't  you  have  someone  else  to  torture  with  your  presence  ,  potter  ?  or  maybe  someone  else  to  throw  money  at  —  instead  of  coming  over  to  remind  me  just  how  much  of  an  overinflated  chucklefuck  you  are  ?  "

while  the  hog's  head  wasn't  necessarily  lily's  first  choice  of  place  to  frequent  ,  the  night  off  had  urged  her  to  get  out  of  the  house  and  do  something  —  she  should've  owled  someone  ,  most  likely  ,  maybe  tried  to  see  if  one  of  her  friends  fancied  a  night  out  ,  but  the  urge  to  be  alone  for  a  few  hours  won  the  silent  argument  she'd  had  with  herself  .  walking  had  done  her  some  good  ,  gotten  her  thoughts  clear  and  allowed  the  girl  to  relax  a  bit  —  window  shopping  and  the  night's  breeze  on  her  face  ,  as  well  as  the  sight  of  families  walking  down  cobblestone  roads  had  done  wonders  to  keep  her  mind  from  spiraling  ,  from  going  places  she  knew  would  only  keep  her  up  at  night  .  the  idea  of  popping  inside  the  pub  and  seeing  if  teddy  was  working  was  as  much  of  a  distraction  as  it  was  a  disguised  want  to  check  on  him  :  to  make  sure  he  was  alright  ,  because  merlin  only  knew  they  were  in  the  same  boat  ,  and  that  boat  was  full  of  holes  .  still  ,  she  plastered  a  grin  on  her  face  ,  making  her  way  inside  and  plopping  herself  down  on  the  precariously  balanced  stool  ,  nails  tapping  over  the  counter  for  a  moment  in  a  playful  tune  as  she  spoke  .  "  good  sir  ,  i'd  like  a  glass  of  your  cheapest  firewhiskey  .  "
