the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

Orpheus is a very relatable protagonist. I too would burst out into a song capable of swaying the hearts and minds of gods if Eurydice was playfully teasing me while also flashing her shoulder.

The thing about Hadestown is the line “To know how it ends. And still begin to sing it again. As if it might turn out this time” is an incredible way to describe most of life. We try because we have to believe that even when the ending is set in stone, it’s still worth trying. It’s still better to be a person who tried.

I love all the little costuming details you can see in the proshot. Hade's having snakeskin arm bands. Eurydice wearing a snake ring on her fingers and a feather in her hair. The coal covering the souls in hadestown. The lace at the end of Eurydices dress, making it look almost tattered. Hermes wing pins, of course. Just so many things you could never catch from the stage

"the Hadestown proshot exceeds box office expectations" truly, who could have predicted fans going repeated times, to see the musical whose entire concept is about the musical repeating

the “sexy lamp test” but for disabled folks: if you can replace your disabled character with a beloved pet dog that needs an expensive surgery to survive then you have to throw out your manuscript 

I just feel like we're not talking enough about the pro-labor, pro-union, themes in Hadestown. My boy Orpheus is literally wearing a red bandana. He said you simply have to stand up, together, even when it's terrifying and you have never done it before. There are more of us than them. Even if it seems impossible we have hope, because we are standing in solidarity. You can only make demands of gods if you have your union behind you. And then you realise they aren't gods, and you can bargain.

excited about the hadestown proshot (i haven't seen it because it's not in the uk yet) but it does mean i've had to see some absolutely dogshit takes. 'orpheus is toxic because he didn't trust eurydice' 'stop projecting hope onto this story it's a tragedy' 'people gasping as he turns around is a sign of the literacy crisis' for fuck's sake

This makes me feel like such a boomer, but I hate it how all media has been TikTok-ified and algorithm primed. Songs are shorter, designed for short viral clips rather than a full listening experience. TV shows and movies are sloppier, dragging on and on, assuming you’ll be on your phone and have it only in the background. Even books have been chewed up and spat back out as easily consumable tropes, with bite-sized chapters and mannequins for characters. This late stage capitalism hellscape we’re in has made art into something you snack on rather than savor.
