a collection of my playlists highlighting black artists in multiple genres of music. a little late for BHM but better late than never <3 enjoy! suggestions and additions are always welcome.

black people created rock: a forever growing playlist of various sub - genres of rock made by black artists and musicians; from classic rock, pop punk, rock rap, metal, post hardcore, etc. from underground bands, popular artists experimenting with their sound, artists from other genres collaborating with rock stars, and more!

a southern gothic tale: country / folk / blues / bluegrass; there are some rap / pop songs that include country elements in them but for the most part it's what you think.

black alternative: black artists that make music outside of the expectation. alt [rnb/pop], hyperpop, indie [pop/rock], dream - pop, bedroom pop; you name it, it's probably in here.

black g!rl pvnk !: similar to my black people created rock playlist, except it's just black women. this playlist also includes rap that takes heavy inspiration from alternative subculture.

juicy fruit, certified bubble yum: [bubblegum] pop by black artists. oftentimes our music gets categorized as rnb / urban / hip hop even when it's clearly not! there's been a historical record of black music being put in the wrong categories by reviewers and the academy trying to box black music into a box. while some songs may have rnb elements, it's clear that they're classic, well-made, and respected pop songs!

Say what you want about the 2023 Shakespeare in The Park production of Hamlet, but the choices made in that play WORKED. Having Hamlet wear a black hoodie and camo pants and him dramatically putting his hood up when he was pissed off was inspired. Having Horatio video tape Claudius on an iPhone camera from the side of the stage during the play within the play was hilarious. Having the play within the play be a hip hop dance number that represented the murder!?! Fantastic. Having Ophelia be a singer before she went mad and having a beautiful voice that everyone loved to listen to and then seeing her singing get worse and worse as she got nearer to death?!?! Hamlet pulling out his iphone after killing Polonius to show his mom a picture of his dad compared to a picture of Claudius and angrily swiping back and forth between the two as he said “What judgement would step from this… to this?” The crowd fucking lost it every time. Horatio singing to Hamlet as he died made me fully sob every time. The way they did the ghost on stage was so chilling and I can’t even accurately describe it, you just had to be there. Hamlet being deeply exasperated the entire time was just perfect. Hamlet and Horatio had a secret handshake. Laertes inexplicably carried an acoustic guitar case for much of the play which was very funny but also hit you with the heartbreaking implication that he had used to play while Ophelia sang and he stopped carrying it after she died. It was peak teenage-angst-hamlet and it was so dear to me. PLEASE if anyone has a recording, send it to me.

Aphrodite or Venus sexy sketch (kinda)

I wanted to make her look like Katy Perry or something (like a cupcake or a lollipop, I mean), but it ended up this way. She seems like an evil sea fairy so I guess it’s not so bad. Aphrodite is the goddess of love, beauty, desire and passion. She was never one of my favourites but her stories are fun because she’s pretty cruel sometimes and the other times she doesn’t give a shit. She’s usually making out with Ares (Mars), the god of war and violence, a real idiot (but he’s handsome).

...The most pushback I ever had from an editor on a book was on Deep Wizardry—the scene where Nita and Kit tell Nita’s parents that they have to [DO A REDACTED THING] and her parents forbid them to do it, and Nita shouts at them “Don’t you know there are more important things in the world than doing what you tell me?”

There was significant fuss over that. My editor said, “You’d be sending the message that it’s good for children to disobey their parents!” ...And I said, “Yep, that’s about right.” We went back and forth over this issue for a couple of letters’ worth of notes. Finally my editor dropped the subject (though she still had concerns) and the book went to press as it was.

There was never any trouble about that, as far as I can tell. But over the years I’ve gotten a lot of mail saying, in essence, THANK YOU FOR SETTING ME FREE.

...It’s so gratifying. :)
