The time has come to share with the world my first DND character for my first DND campaign, worth 3 months of work! I and my DM are extremely excited to see how my character and her secrets will play out during the campaign. Everyone, meet Muse!
Character Overview
True Name: Muse
Age: 19 years old
Primary Alias: Aria Daffodil, human female
Race: Changeling
Sexuality: Pansexual
Class: Bard (College of Eloquence)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Wayfarer
Core Motivation: Combating systemic injustice and government corruption.
Core Flaw: Severe fear of abandonment and rejection, leading her to hide her true identity from everyone, including her allies.
Secondary Flaws: She has trouble accepting help because she's survived alone for so long; She lies even when she doesn't need to because it is easier/safer than being vulnerable; She always assumes authority figures are corrupt because of her skewed perspective and awful childhood.
Signature Equipment: A lute featuring a long, thin hidden compartment in the neck of the instrument
Backstory
Muse was born in the Patchwork Agricultural estates to two changeling parents. At age 4, the people discovered their changeling identities, leading them to form a mob. Her parents resisted the townspeople to allow Muse to escape and were killed in front of her. Muse fled to the lower city of Calimport and began living on the streets, adopting the human persona “Zuzu Featherflight” and hiding her changeling identity to survive. “Zuzu” was a nickname her parents had given her.
Living as an urchin, she joined a group of human street children who accepted her under the assumption that she was human. (More details to be added about their names, backstories, and future relevance to the campaign, if any). At age 9, the group discovered she was a changeling and cast her out. She subsequently adopted a new human persona, "Aria Daffodil.” She chose the name Aria due to her love for music. In the months that she was alone, she gained possession of her special lute, which she used to aid her in stealing food.
Alone and in danger on the streets, she was very nearly kidnapped by a group of slavers. However, she was rescued by a 14-year-old human boy, a young rogue orphan named Sedrick whom she came to see as an older brother figure. He became the one of the only people she has ever truly trusted. Expecting immediate rejection, Muse immediately confessed her changeling identity to him, pushing the boundaries to see how far she could go before he left her too. The boy accepted her regardless and took care of her. While Sedrick genuinely accepted her and acted with her best intentions at heart, he continuously emphasized that she must strictly hide her true identity from the rest of the world to stay safe. Though intended as protective advice, this warning reinforced her traumatic past experiences, deeply feeding her insecurities and solidifying her belief that her true self is inherently dangerous and must always be concealed.
Their separation was sudden and traumatic. Sedrick was arrested for stealing, taking full credit for the crime specifically to ensure that Muse walked free. He was imprisoned at age 17, when Muse was 12, leaving him in a high-danger situation (being a child in a jail) that Muse was entirely powerless to prevent. This event deeply reinforced her belief that anyone she loves or connects with will ultimately be taken away from her. She spent the next few years on her own, using her changeling powers and her music to do whatever it takes to survive, and refusing to let anyone else become close to her.
At age 15, motivated by the systemic injustices she witnessed, Muse began using her changeling abilities to strike back against corrupt political structures. She uses her hidden lute compartment to assist in her operations, storing tools, contraband, or stolen paperwork. Rather than infiltrating systems gradually, Muse executes high-risk, single-day operations. She steals the identity of a politician or world leader for exactly one day, uses their authority to pass a few immediate laws, steals critical documents, and thoroughly disrupts their operations before abandoning the guise. She limits these takeovers to a single day to prevent her cover from being blown. This chaotic, fast-paced method of hit-and-run political sabotage is what has earned her a widespread reputation as an anonymous, anti-hero vigilante. People are blind to her true age, gender, identity, species, etc, and so know her only as The Shooting Star, a folk hero and urban legend.
At age 18, she joined the Adventurer's Guild where she met and began dating her girlfriend, Seraphina Goldenrose. (Seraphina is a player character, not an npc) Seraphina is a Tiefling, and the two of them bonded over their shared issues with identity and rejection. They gradually earned each other's trust as they grew closer, leading the two of them to eventually reveal their secrets to each other. The two of them continue to date for about a year, when at 19, they are both assigned to a mission with the campaign's adventuring party by the Adventurer's Guild. Muse maintains her "Aria Daffodil" persona, keeping her true changeling identity, Sedrick's imprisonment, and her vigilante background a strict secret from the group due to her deeply ingrained fear of rejection and her belief that total concealment is her only protection. At some point during the campaign, she hopes she may be able to embark on a side quest to free Sedrick (once she opens up to the party about her secrets).
Here is the curated identity for "Aria Daffodil" that the party is privy to, composed half-truths and white lies. It is basically a condensed version of Muse's real backstory with a few key details removed and a few supplementary lies added in.
Character Overview
Name: Aria Daffodil
Age: 19 years old
Race: Human
Sexuality: Pansexual
Class: Bard (College of Eloquence)
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Background: Wayfarer
Core Motivation: Proving herself in a world that has never believed in her; Proving that despite being just a human orphan, she is intelligent and capable.
Core Flaw: Feeling like an outcast, leading to self-alienation, which thereby leads to feeling like even more of an outcast; Being unwilling to open up to and trust others.
Signature Equipment: A lute featuring a hidden compartment.
Backstory
Aria was abandoned at an orphanage in the lower city of Calimport as an infant child, leaving her with no memory of her birth parents. Her name was unknown, but people called her “Aria” because she was always singing, even before she could talk. She chose the last name “Daffodil” when she was 4 because they were the only flower that grew in the yard of the orphanage. At age 6 she ran away from the overcrowded orphanage and bad conditions, leaving her to the streets. (Anything was better than that.) She was a loner. She bounced between groups, but never truly found a place where she belonged. As she got older, her instincts sharpened, and she learned to rely on no one but herself. She felt determined to prove herself strong, despite her outward appearance of simply a scrawny and scrappy human girl. By 9 years old, she got her hands on a lute, and taught herself the instrument, writing her own songs. She sang and stole to survive, accompanying herself in performances. She wandered between cities, never truly belonging anywhere and never actually wanting to. At age 18, she joined the Adventurer's Guild where she met and started dating her girlfriend, Seraphina Goldenrose. Finally, at age 19, she was assigned to a mission with the adventuring party.

Guys a week out from starting my first DND campaign and my delusion is being fueled by the fact that my best friend, my crush, proposed (in a very flirtatious way) to have our characters be sapphic together. We now have a set time to spend an afternoon drawing them all coupled up both in domestic settings and in combat. I'm sick
England won the world cup match against France. I, although I played soccer as a kid and referee recreational games, I don't keep very up to date on the international matches - but I do know that when England wins the world cup, domestic abuse rises by 26%. The percentage would have been 38% had they lost.
Although the study that gave us this statistic was specific to England, domestic abuse rates drastically increase during all major sporting events internationally, an event caused mostly by an increase in the consumption of alcohol and the intense emotional investment (Sports Hysteria) many men have in the outcome of sports matches.
My heart goes out to anyone in the world who experiences domestic abuse - be it emotional or physical. I hope that the women and children in violent households are able to stay safe.
I work as a barista at a local small business smoothie shop, and today the two CUTEST little girls of all time came into the store. They were hanging around because their mom was selling flowering at a booth outside, and they, with their stuffed animals as big as them, happily greeted me at the counter and tiped me with a ripped hippo squishy and two pink ribbon bows. Guys I think I'm dead because I just about melted right there on the spot.
They came in again and offered me a pot of wildflowers in a mason jar to display on the counter. I can't please help me they are too adorable.

Ah, yes. Last night I had a dream. And let me just say that it is just like my brain to dream an entire 2 season animated young adult historical fantasy show with revolutions, oppressive governments, nuance, and morally gray characters, without providing me with the time, energy, money, or ability to animate to actually make it exist. Ah, well. It'll have to either be a novel or die in my brain.
Happy Pride Month to all!!

People always talk about how Vi and Caitlyn's lesbian situationship breakup resulted in Vi becoming an underground fighter and Caitlyn becoming a dictator. It is a really common, really funny meme. But I never actually see anyone talk about the way that Vi's whole life has been leading to this mental breakdown, because it is actually a really interesting aspect of her character to explore.
Her entire life, Vi has never had someone that she could depend on, that she could lean on. She's always been the person that people are leaning on. Vander tells her, presumably more often than just the one moment we saw on screen: "If anything happens to those kids, it's on you." She leaned on Vander to a certain extent, but he put so much pressure on her. Vi's life was defined by the people that she fought for. She had Powder, then she had Mylo and Clagger, and then she was in prison and she could only focus on herself. She doesn't trust anybody else. And just in general, she has learned that she cannot rely on anybody except for herself.
Then along came Caitlyn and got her out of that prison where she spent seven years rotting since she was sixteen years old, which is such a hellscape of a situation to be in. Obviously, Vi does not trust her at first, but Caitlyn earns that trust. Caitlyn is then with her for the rest of Season 1 and the beginning of Season 2, the grounding or stable factor in her life that "won't change." Caitlyn is the sole thing that stays the same, which makes her the sole thing keeping Vi sane. Vi trusted her, even though she has never had someone that she can rely on. Vi has never leaned on someone, and it took so much for her to get to that moment where she could trust someone, anyone.
When Vi and Caitlyn break up, Vi is watching that grounding, stable, reliable relationship shatter, and that is the straw that breaks the camel's back. Caitlyn tries to shoot Jinx, even if it means risking shooting a child. This is the beginning of the end because these are Vi's own people. She already didn't like that they were using the Gray against them, which is even beyond the enforcer brutality that she had always feared as a child. Vi had been able to ignore it up until that point, but the fact that her girlfriend was willing to go that far meant that from that point on, Vi could never look at her the same way.
I think even when they reunite in Season 2, when they mutually apologize, there is always going to be that level of mistrust that stems from a childhood of evading the same corrupt enforcers that Caitlyn nearly became. Caitlyn says, "I keep telling myself that you're different... but you're not. It's her blood in your veins." Caitlyn is talking about Jinx's blood, but this statement extends to all people from the Undercity. So when Caitlyn turns against Vi, when she hits her, that trust is instantly broken.
This leaves Vi in an uncertain state where, for the first time in her life, she has no purpose. First, her purpose was to be a kid and obviously survive the Undercity, but to be a kid. Then her parents died, and her purpose was to keep Powder safe. Then her purpose was to keep Mylo and Clagger safe. Then Mylo and Clagger died, and she was sent to prison, and her purpose was getting out of prison to go find her sister. And then she found out that Powder became Jinx. Then her purpose was to be Cait's girlfriend, and to help her through the loss of her mother, and to find Jinx and bring her to justice.
After the breakup, however, her sister is out there alone, and Cait's abandoned her, and she is completely lost. Nobody is relying on her, and she doesn't know what to do with that. So she breaks. Vi spent her entire life fighting to protect other people. Without someone else to fight for, she fights to self-destruct. Because isn’t fighting all she's good for?
Just food for thought beyond the toxic yuri breakup stereotypes. (By the way, I don't hate Caitlyn at all! This post may make it seem that way, but it is written entirely from Vi's perspective, which makes it skewed towards her.)
Pretty sure I'm burned out but also I can't tell if I'm just tired as my sleep schedule is nonexistent so what if I'm being dramatic but what if i am actually burned out but I'm functioning so it's probably fine it's definitely not fine but I still tell people it's fine because if people know that I'm not fine the world will end because I have people that will be worried about me and so I will become a burden and the world will end-

I dissapeared but I'm alive I promise It's just that free time doesn't exist tbh
There's nothing like finally meeting up with a really close friend who lives far away, talking to them for hours, and then parting, knowing that you won't see them again for 6 months to a year.
Life is like cold pizza. Some people like it, but I genuinely can't understand why.

Writer culture is realizing that the characters are suddenly being able to do whatever they want, and instead if I, their creator, controlling them, all I can do is write about their actions and pray it turns out okay. And then the comments are like, "I'm so scared for how this will end! Any hints?" I DON'T KNOW I AM JUST AS SCARED AS YOU😭

Writer culture is listening to a song and then writing a whole-ass novel because the song gave you a vibe (and currating far too many playlists in the meantime)
.
Writer culture is saying that the fic isn't beta read because it technically isn't, but you have shown the chapter to like five of your friends before you published it. They didn't beta read or edit, but they did tell you it was good to increase your motivation and give you the dopamine to finally finish the update!
