It was always something happening with Ghost. First was him needing his seal companion—you, then it was him going into mourning after the two of you were separated, and now it was him starting to get aggressive with his pod-mates over you.
Their interactions with you started somewhat innocently: Gaz rolling up next to you on the articial shore in order to sunbathe with you (Ghost, of course, just a few feet away on a rock), Price making sure you got first pick of fish at feeding time, and Soap giving you some of the treasures he had collected over the years in the aquarium (a employee badge, a ring, a dropped earbud that a teenage volunteer had lost). You had started to grow close to them, and Ghost was glad that his sweet seal was transitioning into the group…until Soap went and messed it all up.
Soap, being the fool he was and only thinking of mating, not-so-subtly began courting you just a few weeks into your placement with the pod. It started with more treasures, then more food…then he tried to snuggle up against you one night as you slept against Ghost.
Researchers couldn’t get answers from either Soap or Ghost as to why the former suddenly had a large bruise blooming over his cheek.
But it wasn’t only Soap, Gaz had decided to court you too. He had been more…subtle than his eager pod-mate. He drifted and napped beside you during the day, kept his distance during nights, and never gave you a single gift. Instead, he relied on his warmth.
Gaz was a long fin Mako shark mer, and as such, possessed an ability that no one else in the pod had: warming up specific parts of his body. So whenever he napped alongside you, he warmed himself up enough to where you started to scoot closer to him. And it got to the point where you ventured over to his sleeping area for warmth in the night. The first morning Ghost woke up to you having abandoned his side for Gaz, he put a stop to his attempts at whisking you away.
Since both the mers attempts were discovered and halted, they only got bolder.
And Ghost only got more agitated.
And you, as a result, began getting more stressed.
Which fed into Ghost’s frustration, which then made the pair hammer home their courting efforts; it was an endless feedback loop.
“I can’t make him be less territorial over her,” Price sighed out to Laswell on the dock above the aquarium while she documented the healing of his right fin.
“Could you not at least try to get them to see reason?” Laswell sighed. “He tried to rip apart Soap yesterday for feeding her.”
“Ghost views her as a mate and the other two view her as ’up for grabs’—what could I do?” Price grunted, his hands reaching down to massage the tender, scaled flesh around the side of his fin.
“You’re the pod leader aren’t you? They don’t question you’re authority.” Laswell gave Price a look that told him exactly what she was thinking.
“Ghost’ll take my head clean off,” Price said, but he knew she was right.
That night, right before sleep, Price made a change to the sleeping arrangements. You had already settled into your spot in the sand, strewn out comfortably while Ghost was looking around for any remaining scurrying shrimp from feeding time to give to you. Price swam up to you, and you peered up at him curiously.
"You'll sleep alongside me from now on, how does that sound?" Price asked, carving out a space for himself beside you in the sand. You reached up one of your clawed hands to poke at his rather fatty stomach.
"Okay," you said, snuggling up to him quickly.
When Ghost returned with Soap and Gaz in tow (as the two started racing each other to find the most shrimp for you) to find Price engulfing your plush form, he was close to ripping the pod leader apart. But, pod hierarchy was etched into his DNA, and the look of sheer comfort as you snuggled up to Price, forbid him from doing so.
So instead, he settled just a little bit away, watching over her before falling into a restless sleep.
