The enhanced homophobia of the general audience was to be expected—the rejection of a queer ship by canon always attracts people who claim the ship never held any merit at all. They assume queer people cannot assess media clearly, that their judgement is clouded by their own “agendas.”

Less expected, was the horrible ableism of the general audience. Psychosis, mass delusion, hysteria; in their homophobia, people have assigned many names to the feelings and thoughts of the queer members of the ST community. (It bothers me less when byler fans refer to byler psychosis, since it is done without malice, but there is something to be said about the “quirkification” of mental illness.) Truthfully, most of the people who claim byler fans to be suffering these symptoms know not even what they mean. What is psychosis? They don’t know, and they don’t care, because it’s just another label for behaviours they dislike. Just as they assume queer people cannot make judgements, they assume mentally ill people cannot either. “Psychosis” is their excuse not to engage with the arguments of people they disagree with. “Psychosis” is their excuse to disregard ideas they disagree with. This speaks to a larger societal issue regarding the treatment of mentally ill individuals—are people mad, or simply different? I digress, members of the ST GA use homophobia and ableism in tandem to spout rhetoric claiming the people they dislike should be commit to asylums—that queer people are simply mad, that mad people deserve to be imprisoned.

The heart of this behaviour is that these people are bigots who have never believed in or hoped for anything at all, and they therefore assume that anyone who possesses hope or belief is a faggot, a hysteric, or an insane person. And the answer to that, is who cares? I’m a crazy faggot, and I’m fine. Queer people and mentally ill people are capable of making judgements and analyzing media. Queer and mentally ill people are normal. Queer and mentally ill people don’t deserve to have their identities used as excuses to criticize and disregard opinions you disagree with.
