ho-ho-hochiminh replied to your post: I’m only five minutes into the Canada-themed…
Do a fact checking post bc i refuse to watch it
An unofficial list of things that the Patriot Act episode about Canada got wrong:
“[Trudeau has] welcomed over 100,000 refugees to Canada with open arms…”
I think it’s fair to say that a large proportion of the refugees who’ve been shuffled between shelters and university dorms, left to fend for themselves, and harassed by Sue-Ann Levy’s xenophobic fanboys would disagree with this sentiment. We took in a grand total of 11 refugees since 2016 from a UN program designed to aid Central American refugees; Canadian mining companies have had a brutal impact on countries like Honduras and Guatemala. Beyond that, Trudeau’s government also tried to deport Abdoul Abdi and Abdilahi Elmi, who came to Canada as child refugees and whose Canadian guardians in the child welfare system never bothered to apply for citizenship for them.
“[Trudeau’s] economic policies have lifted more than 2% of Canada’s population out of poverty.”
A government statistic is cited here, but other measures of poverty from other sources are less favourable. Trudeau’s Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, is literally the MP for the child poverty capital of Toronto.
“[Trudeau] was the dream politician for the left.”
“Officially, Trudeau got a yellow card for the [SNC-Lavalin] scandal, but politically, his approval rating has been cut in half, from 65% to 32%.”
Cherry-picking Trudeau’s all-time highest rating of 65% three years ago falsely implies that SNC-Lavalin tanked his approval rating. Trudeau’s approval rating was 35% in December 2018, before the scandal, and 33% in March 2019, shortly after the scandal first broke.
“A Canadian prime minister got the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957 for literally inventing UN peacekeeping.”
Lester B. Pearson did suggest using UN personnel as neutral observers in conflict zones, something that had essentially already happened in Egypt. However, it’s not like we have much to brag about here given that we sent a bunch of racists and a former KKK recruiter, Matt McKay, on a so-called peacekeeping mission to Somalia, where McKay complained that he wasn’t ready to leave because “we ain’t killed enough n*****s yet.”
“The Conservatives say that the [Trans Mountain] pipeline will create tens of thousands of jobs in Canada.”
Zero pushback here on a claim that has been widely debunked.
“Canada is still a progressive country and a proving ground for whether progressive policies can work.”
“You guys are this society that has cracked…healthcare [and] immigration.”
We absolutely have not cracked either of these issues.
“I know there are a lot of Canadians watching this thinking ‘…Trudeau isn’t perfect, but if you care about the environment, you know he’s the only realistic option in this election.’ And look, I understand that…”
Hasan Minhaj mentions in his introduction that Canada has a multi-party system, but then gives us this garbage.
