"Take your life in your own hands, and what happens? A terrible thing: no one to blame."
-Erica Jong
Life is so hard!!! But you know what? My friend walked me home when I had a migraine even though it meant missing part of a party. My partner brought containers of soup across town to give to our friends. My classmate took the time to email me when I missed class to ask how I was doing. No one judged me during my presentation for stumbling over my words. My coworker told me to take off early because itβs a beautiful day. A stranger in line for the bakery was the first person to celebrate with me when I submitted an important application. The barista at the cafe where I study remembers me and always asks how Iβm doing or where Iβve been if I havenβt come around.
These kinds of interactions used to feel mythical to me, like something that only happened to especially lovely and deserving people. But the truth is we are all equally deserving of love. It wasnβt because of who I am that I wasnβt receiving this kindness, it was because of where I was planted. I had to change my circumstances, and I had to be brave enough to place myself in the position to receive this kindness. If we are willing to take the risk of being honest that we need and want loveβ we have created a path for those who want to offer it.
"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."
-Anais Nin
I thought about just tagging this 'nuff said, but it's not.
I want to say something to all of the women under 50 on this site. Ready? You do not have to be over 50 to start taking up space.
Can I make that blink? Is that a thing Tumblr can do? Because, seriously. The sooner you believe you are allowed to take up space, the better life will be.

every other week, my mom would make a giant pot of vegetable soup. she'd pack half of it in a tupperware and take it to her best friend's house. they both had three kids whose ages aligned. they'd lock us out of the house and go through each room, finding every piece of dirty laundry and then spend the afternoon keeping the washer and dryer running, folding and putting away each load while gossiping.
every alternate week, her best friend would come to our house with a tupperware full of chicken spaghetti. they'd stick us in front of a tv with a stack of disney vhs tapes and go through each room, finding every dirty dish, and then spend the afternoon at the kitchen sink, washing each dish by hand while gossiping.
it wasn't always soup and spaghetti and laundry and dishes. but it was almost always a meal and a chore. here is a night you don't have to cook dinner. here is a chore you can cross off your list. and here is a day you don't have to spend alone. because really food and friendship and a feeling of accomplishment are what we all need most.
βDo it scaredβ βdo it aloneβ are all great tips, but my biggest takeaway from therapy is do it messy. This is especially true if youβre getting out of a burnout, which I experience often. Literally just do it messy. You donβt need to pick the perfect trail to walk, the perfect playlist to listen to, whatever the fuck it is. You donβt need to have a meticulous to do list and wake up at the exact time you planned and drink the exact amount of water you planned to drink. Like the biggest thing for people like me to remember is sometimes itβs okay to do it messy. Put on a random yt workout and just get it done in sweats. Do 5 minutes of a daunting task and go from there. Sometimes just getting up is a win during intense burnouts or depressive funks. Literally just do it messy.
For the sake of your mental health, stop downplaying your growth. Your younger self is so proud of how far you've come.
