give that character who is usually so stoic a fever. make them softly beg for contact. Make them whimper and sob and plead for someone, anyone to stay. Stay with them— they don’t… Everything feels weird, and it’s safer with you, please—
I love a dazed, out-of-it, purely broken whumpee. One who is so gone and dead to the real world, they don’t notice a single thing going on. Perhaps it’s a learned coping mechanism to get through the torture. Whumpee, who is pliant to whumper’s will and clocked out to the pain not because they want to, but because it’s the only way they get through it all. Perhaps it’s what whumper was waiting for—finally breaking them into an impossible, unrecognizable shred of a being doing barely more than living despite it all.
Whumpee, so mentally broken and having physically given up so completely that they are numb to anything happening to or around them. They see and hear and feel nothing.
Not whumper.
Not whumper’s continued torture.
Not even caretaker who’d only just rushed in, ready to fight for whumpee, hoping and praying that whumpee hadn’t yet perished, only to see them doing little more than staring up at nothing, eyes dull and unseeing, with their head rolled back, barely reacting more than the involuntary flinches of their body’s nervous system and not because the feel anything happening to them. Looking more dead than caretaker ever thought a still living being could be.
Dazed. Unresponsive. Gone.
And make sure a friend or loved one sees how broken they’ve become.
Yeah. Do that to your whumpees.

Whumpee who, before being held in captivity by Whumper, was someone with a lot of potential. They were great at what they did and on track to do amazing things. Their life wasn't perfect by any means, but it was what most people would consider pretty damn good. But after finally being rescued after years under Whumper's thumb, they're a shell of their former self who can do very little of what they used to. They feel like they have to start their life all over again and have no idea how long it will take to rebuild, but at least they have Caretaker by their side to help.
oh that’s good, that’s really good.
hits especially hard, I think, if caretaker is someone who was involved in their former life and activity. they were in the same field, colleagues. or teammates. or they competed against each other. or they were friends who met in the same program for their thing. caretaker has always admired and respected them and their skill and dedication - and them personally, too.
and now they aren’t the same. they’re disabled by what whumper did to them - physically or as a result of psychological trauma. they’re not the same person, not the same professional. not the same prodigy.
but caretaker is still there. their relationship survives the lack of whumpee’s talent and accolades. caretaker’s affection, caretaker’s good opinion, caretaker’s respect is not contingent on that thing that used to make whumpee so special. it seems too good to be true. but there caretaker is, holding their hand in the dark, still looking at them with the same warmth as ever.

hero comes home and immediately goes into their room and strips out of their clothes. they stare at themself in the mirror.
tears spring into their eyes and they trace over their bruises. there's a knock on the door and they sniffle, "i'll be out in a minute!"
"are you okay?" the voice from the other side of the door asks. "you've been in there for a while."
"yeah," hero says, pulling a shirt over their head, "everything's fine. just...give me a minute."
A character is having heated words with another, getting increasingly agitated, until their ill or injured companion reaches weakly for them from where they're lying, whereupon the angry character abandons the escalating fight and switches demeanour entirely, no argument more important than not distressing their companion further, as they catch up the feeble hand in both of theirs and hurriedly obey the summons to reassure them.
Hear me out...... what if.... a character got hurt... and another character.... comforted them afterwards.....

☑️ imagining blorbo from my show getting beaten within an inch of their life and crying in the arms of the one they love
whumpee who insists that they're fine, they're fine, they're fine. help the others, they got it a lot worse than they did. they're fine.
and they can keep it up until caretaker, the only person who can really get through to them, pushes the medics away and stands in front of whumpee, strong enough for the both of them, and whumpee breaks
they fall against caretaker, face buried in their chest and sob.

Guy who never feels like his problems are “bad enough” to be taken seriously: what if I hurt the character so horrifically that everyone around them could not possibly deny the severity of their pain even if the character themself tries to downplay it.
Whumpee waking up in a bed and trying to get up, but as soon as they move they feel a hand appearing on their shoulder, gently pushing them back down.
A character so exhausted or sunk into their own misery of pain that they're stumbling along by rote without any real awareness of their surroundings until they essentially collide with another character who steps into their path and catches hold of them.
waking up a sick or hurt character... hesitating by their sleeping form, because maybe for once they're almost peaceful, or maybe they've taken so long to reach sleep in the first place. but in the end they have to do it, to help them drink water or take medicine, or maybe to move them from their place to somewhere safer or more comfortable. so they regretfully, gently shake their shoulder or run a hand over their sweat-slick forehead, speaking in a soft voice, soothing them in their dazed drowsy confusion. it's all right, just a moment, I'll let you rest again in a moment.
as much as I love whumpees who are just absolutely knocked out by their illness, there's something equally great about whumpees who are just barely there. their eyes are still open a sliver, and when caretaker moves across the room they track their movements lazily. they don't have the energy to speak but they don't need to- the pained look in their eyes and the weak groans they're able to make tell the story well enough.
they're not conscious, but they're not unconscious either. they're just... in between. drifting. too sick to be alert but also too sick to fall asleep comfortably.
all caretaker can do is sit by their side with a washcloth to gently wipe the sheen of sweat from their forehead and soothe them with reassurances that, judging by that glazed look in their eyes, caretaker isn't quite sure they can even understand.

“Take It Easy” Caretaker Vibes 🫂
1. “You’re done. You hear me? You did enough.”
2. “Hey—stop. You don’t have to prove anything right now.”
3. “Breathe. Just… breathe, okay? That’s all you need to do.”
4. “You’re shaking. Sit down before you fall down.”
5. “Don’t make me hold you down just to make you rest.”
6. “You don’t have to keep fighting, kid. It’s over.”
7. “Look at me. You’re safe. That’s it—just stay here.”
8. “You’re allowed to fall apart now.”
9. “Hey, hero—nobody’s watching. You can stop pretending you’re fine.”
10. “I know you want to move. I’m telling you—don’t. Let your body calm down.”
11. “You’ve been through hell. Let it process, go slow.”
12. “If you stand up again, I swear I’ll knock you back down myself.” (half-joking, half-terrified)
13. “You don’t have to burn yourself out to prove you’re still alive.”
14. “You’re not weak. You’re wrecked. There’s a difference.”
15. “Just let me carry it for a minute, yeah?”
16. “I’ve got you. That’s not negotiable.”
17. “It’s over. You survived. Just breathe... That’s the only thing you need to do now.”
18. “You’re bleeding through the tough act, sweetheart.”
19. “You don’t have to talk. Just stay breathe.”
20. “Rest. That’s an order.”
Just. The whole "strangers rescue a freezing and half drowned whumpee after they fell into the sea/a river/lake" thing. An isolated village scavenging a shipwreck only to find a lone survivor, limp and pale and barely alive. Carrying them inside and wrapping them up warmly by a fire, bandaging any injuries and keeping a close watch on them until they've started shivering again; spooning helpings of warm broth and tea into their mouth as they gradually regain consciousness, letting them rest for hours after. Waiting for them to be well enough to tell their story.
And of course, caring for them as instead of getting better, they slide from an exhausted sleep into a feverish doze as their body battles infection -- from a wound, from water in their lungs etc
