there’s just something so awesome about a character you love getting really badly hurt
my human vaporizing machine continues to mistify people
Musician whumpee’s bandmate, whumper, forces them to perform in terrible conditions despite an illness, thereby making their illness far worse and potentially life-threatening.

caretaker finally gets to whumpee to rescue them, but whumpee is just in so much pain from their injuries. they can barely speak. whumpee is screaming, sobbing, whimpering, begging for relief, but there's only such much caretaker can do.
caretaker tries to comfort them while also trying to free them/tend to their injuries/etc. whumpee being at least somewhat aware that caretaker is doing their best, they're just in agony.
“I closed my eyes and pretended nothing was wrong,” whumpee whispers. “But it hurt. It hurt so badly...”
(Depending on who whumpee is talking to, the responses to this confession can vary.)
“Oh whumpee, I am so, so sorry.”
“Why didn't you say anything?”
“Shh, it's okay now. You don't have to pretend anymore. You're safe.”
“I understand. It hurt me, too.”
“You should know better than to keep secrets from me, whumpee. Next time, you tell me- or else.”
“This is what was weighing on you? Poor, foolish whumpee. You weren't tricking me. I knew you hated it. I just did it anyway.”
“You knew you had to be strong. And you were right. The more you practice, the easier that will be.”
"I got you out of that place, and I can put you back in."
that incoherent babbling stage of pleading when the pain is too much but they just have to keep asking for it to stop or they aren't even aware that what they're saying isn't words so all that's coming out is half-words and mumbles and gasps >>>>>
give it up for voice breaks everyone. round of applause for shaky whimpers, pained cries, distressed whining, keening in the back of the throat, that moment when a character tries so hard to keep talking but their voice cracks into a fluttery, weak little plea for help

a friendly reminder that even a light fever, a few hours of missed meals, or even a little bit of dehydration can become a huge problem with the right kind of physical activity. if you want to make your kind-of-sick whumpee pass out from exhaustion, have them carry heavy things for a bit. like groceries, or laundry, or cleaning that requires them to move through the house a lot. you don't need a serious problem to make serious symptoms :)
when they survive the first blow and you get to watch them realize whats about to happen to them *again*
I love it when Whumpee is leaning on things. They're dizzy, nauseous, in too much pain to stand, or just plain tired, and they can't get by without some kind of support.
Leaning on cabinets and against walls in people's houses. Propping their head up with their hands at the dining table. Steadying themself against a banister on the stairs. Holding on to the post of the traffic light for dear life while they wait to cross the road because if they stand still unsupported they will fall to the ground.
It's such a small display of I am not feeling good, but once another character notices it becomes so obvious. This person is weak and vulnerable. Either I can help them, or I can hurt them further. It's not like they're in any position to stop me.
“Take It Easy” Caretaker Vibes 🫂
1. “You’re done. You hear me? You did enough.”
2. “Hey—stop. You don’t have to prove anything right now.”
3. “Breathe. Just… breathe, okay? That’s all you need to do.”
4. “You’re shaking. Sit down before you fall down.”
5. “Don’t make me hold you down just to make you rest.”
6. “You don’t have to keep fighting, kid. It’s over.”
7. “Look at me. You’re safe. That’s it—just stay here.”
8. “You’re allowed to fall apart now.”
9. “Hey, hero—nobody’s watching. You can stop pretending you’re fine.”
10. “I know you want to move. I’m telling you—don’t. Let your body calm down.”
11. “You’ve been through hell. Let it process, go slow.”
12. “If you stand up again, I swear I’ll knock you back down myself.” (half-joking, half-terrified)
13. “You don’t have to burn yourself out to prove you’re still alive.”
14. “You’re not weak. You’re wrecked. There’s a difference.”
15. “Just let me carry it for a minute, yeah?”
16. “I’ve got you. That’s not negotiable.”
17. “It’s over. You survived. Just breathe... That’s the only thing you need to do now.”
18. “You’re bleeding through the tough act, sweetheart.”
19. “You don’t have to talk. Just stay breathe.”
20. “Rest. That’s an order.”

writing is just sitting in front of a computer and making up problems for imaginary people while ignoring your own. fun and casual hobby.
