oh dear wise pepper, how do you fight procrastination :(
hi anon!! here is my advice, based on the common causes of procrastination and what helps for each :)
break the task down into very smaller, specific steps (don't think of it as “write essay”, instead “think about question” → “make a rough plan” -> "write first draft" -> "edit", etc.)
make a checklist so you can see progress
focus only on the next step, not the entire task
💭 i don't know how to start
do the easiest possible first action (title page, outline, random bullet points)
look at a model answer/example
ask a teacher or classmate for clarification early
💭 i’m scared it won’t be good
adopt the "done is better than perfect" mindset
remind yourself that editing exists, you’re not submitting your first attempt
give yourself a fixed amount of time (e.g. 1 hour for an essay draft, and when time is up, move on. this trains you to prioritise efficiency over unnecessary over-polishing
💭 i’m too tired/burnt out
be honest about whether you need rest first
switch to a lower-effort version of studying (reviewing notes, flashcards, light tasks)
reduce your expectations for the day. doing something small still counts and it's better than nothing
💭 i keep getting distracted
remove easy distractions (put your phone in a different room, block websites)
change your study environment (clean your desk, go to the library, different room)
use short, focused work sprints
💭 there's no immediate pressure
set earlier personal deadlines
tell someone your plan so there’s some accountability
work in small amounts consistently instead of waiting for urgency
i hope this helps, and ofc feel free to send another ask if you need some more tips!
