in defense of lord of the flies' "deus ex machina" ending
a lot of criticism i've seen of lotf actually stems from the fact that the ending is a deus ex machina type
deus ex machina translates in latin to "god from the machine" and originates from ancient greek theatre, when playwrights would write themselves into a corner and had a plot so messy or tragic that the human characters couldn't fix it
they used a literal machine - a crane (the machine) would lower an actor dressed as a greek god (the god) who would use supernatural powers to end the story!
in terms of modern literary context, this is a storytelling term for a sudden, unexpected event, character, or object that appears out of nowhere to instantly solve a hopeless situation
we see this in lord of the flies, when ralph is about to get tortured and murdered by jack's tribe when the naval officer appears and solves their situation (rescue)
a lot of critics have called this a lazy ending on golding's behalf, with even golding himself calling the ending a "gimmick"
however, i actually really disagree with that, and i think there are two really good points as to what makes it so damn perfect
#1: the fall from grace
the boys are faced with the undeniable fact that they have disappointed the adults who they tried to imitate
we see this through the naval officer's telling them off, with him saying "i should have thought that a pack of british boys - you're all british, aren't you?- would be able to put up a better show than that"
the fact the naval officer even questions their british heritage highlights the depravity of their appearances and actions, as in the 50s englishness was percieved as the peak of civility, seen in the fact jack merridew himself says "we're english" as a means to correlate good behaviour with nationality
ralph and the other boys begin to cry, instantly this makes the naval officer feel awkward and embarrassed as he turns away. this also highlights the fact they have lost "decorum" - to cry as a boy in 50s stiff upper lip society really emphasises the fact they have lost all they have to be prideful of
especially with the hunters, considering they were originally choirboys, a universal sign of innocence and gentleness, covered in lots of heavy robes and stiff posture now they stand as "savages", holding spears and covered in paint and naked, this serves to create a dissonance between where they started versus where they ended up
#2: the bitter irony
there is something so satisfyingly ironic about the fact that ralph has spent the entire novel stressing and worrying about the signal fire, only for the fire that alerts rescue to be the one that is intended to smoke him out
it also makes an interesting suggestion, that even the civilised savagery (war, naval officers..) are attracted to primitive violence on the island.
the irony of course also lies in the innocence of the choirboys and the depravity of the hunters in jack's tribe, almost juxtaposing where they have ended up, possibly suggesting that despite as many neat little restrictions and rules you give, even the most innocent and appeasing of roles in society will give way to their innate evil within if prompted
there is also a very tragic irony in the fact that a naval officer rescues ralph, who has been dreaming of and thinking about his own father for the entirety of the novel, who is also a naval officer. linking back to the fall from grace, it is plausible ralph must feel genuine embarrassment being seen in such a state by a man who he correlates with his father
but overall, i personally think having the naval officer rescue ralph last minute really really works for it, and i dont agree that it's a lazy ending
can u draw jack with hamster im collecting lotf befriending hamster...
jack merridew and his posh hamster that he lowkey loves a lot. probably has some fancy ass name and a massive expensive enclosure. hamster is his status symbol and prized possession
momo is allowed to kill me because i kept saying iβd draw this one for like a week oops

Told a beautiful alt woman that I thought she was pretty, today when I was out with my girl bsf. She replied with, βI was gonna say, you guys are cute!β WE ARE NOT TOGETHER QUEEN, YOU CAN WIFE ME UP! PLEASEEEE
this might be my silly inconsequential take about this but I think you should support your friends' art endeavours in whatever ways you can and very vehemently
say nice shit about their art. fangirl about it, compliment the art fundamentals or the vibe or the color whatever. share their posts online
it used to be so easy to create an art community online in the past and now it's hellish. fight the algorithms. spam your friends art. they will either rlly appreciate the attention or straight up need it.
theres something slightly heartbreaking about the thought that the people around you don't care about your creations. by all means, you should create art for yourself but also, sometimes that art is a direct window into your inner world and when friends and loved ones ignore that it can sting pretty bad
that's it folks be nice to each other out there and fight to create meaningful communities
oh what just because im ugly and unskilled and untalented and incapable and emotionally closed off and weird and uncomfortable you donβt want to be my friend . Wowww
