Nathalie is NOT Papillon

#1. She is a girl and Papillon is a guy. Can I make this any more obvious?

Okay, we don’t hear them say their genders right out, but their physical appearances are very different (are they???):

a) Papillon has a longer face than Nathalie

b) His chin is much wider than her’s.

c) Papillon is much more broad shouldered than Nathalie.

d) Height? Nathalie is actually quite tall, so it’s very possible that they are the same height. So that doesn’t rule anything out.

e) Voices; they have two very difference voices. In fact, Papillon is voiced by the same actor as Gabriel Agreste.

#2. In the Jackady episode, Nathalie is in the hallway with Nino when the scene changes to that of Papillon alone in his observatory place. How could she be in two places at once, especially when she is with someone else?

#3.?? That’s pretty much it for why Nathalie can’t be Papillon. Any other reasons are the same as why Gabriel can’t be Papillon: Papillon does not have glasses, Nathalie does; the Agreste Manor is located very close to the Eiffel Tower, and Papillon’s hideout is farther away.

Nathalie IS Papillon

And now some evidence for why Nathalie could be Papillon:

#1. Nathalie is never captured by an enemy (or at least we don’t see it), and other than that scene in Jackady (and maybe another scene where she’s in a car with Adrien and Gorilla while Papillon is attacking, is that a thing that happens?) we never see the two together. So it’s pretty possible that Nathalie could be Papillon.EDIT: We noticed in a rewatch, what might be Nathalie captured:

It very much looks like her, so there’s that. It’s looking less likely like she might be Papillon, sadly.

#2. But, you say, they don’t look anything alike? Neither do Gabriel and Papillon, and people still think they are the same person. The answer is easy: The Miraculous changes Papillon’s features. I mean, it is the Butterfly Miraculous. If Adrien’s can give him cat ears, a tail, and change the way his eyes and hair look, then it’s completely possible for the Butterfly Miraculous to change the way it’s user looks.

#3. But, Nathalie and Papillon don’t look all that different, if you really think about it. Have a closer look at their faces:

Hm, hm, not really all that different. Maybe the chin is a bit different? But you can’t deny that they have the same eyes. Still not convinced, then how about this?

Convincing, no? Oh, still not satisfied, alright then. Have some not so good not-photoshop:

She’s beautiful. This is Papillon’s face, with some of Nathalie’s features. ;;) I only added flesh, and modified her jaw just a bit (because without his mask he has a freakishly long jaw), oh and I gave him ears, and Nathalie’s hair and clothes.

She rather does look a bit like Papillon, and it’s possible that the Miraculous gives her more masculine features when she uses it. 

#4. She has no heart, or well at least that’s her name. But does she have a heart? Maybe? Anyway, her last name means no heart which is like an evil thing to have, so maybe she’s evil like Papillon. Also when Papillon sends out the akuma butterflies, he tells them to “darken their heart” or “something something san coeur.” I’m not French, so I can’t transcribe it but yes. He does say that. Or something like that.

#5. Papillon and Nathalie have basically the same suit:

Both are a dark purple, both have that collar, and her turtleneck is red, but if it were black it’d be just like Papillon’s just, you know, minus that black flared thing. 

#6. Her facial expressions.

Stone. Cold. (I love her.)

#7. He just looks like Nathalie so much!

Conclusion

Well, that’s all folks. Some evidence (can this really be called evidence?) that Nathalie might be Papillon, and some evidence for why she can’t.

What’s the right answer? Well, we’ll see soon enough.

Gabriel Agreste IS Papillon

In the origin episodes, we saw not only the origins of Ladybug and Chat Noir, but possibly the first villainous act of Papillon. We also saw him transform, from someone to Papillon. Let’s look at some of that stuff. ::)

#1. The Picture in the Locket One of the things we see before he transforms is this locket in his hand, and a picture of a woman. We learn that this woman is Adrien’s mother, and so Gabriel’s wife. He even has a Klimt inspired artwork on his office wall. (Which is super cute and super stylish.)

Why would Papillon have a locket of Mrs. Agreste if Papillon was not related to her? So unless Papillon is some unknown brother, or other family member, it’s a safe bet (at this point) to say that maybe this guy is Gabriel.

#2. The Ring Directly in the next scene, we see a ringed hand close the locket (and we learn that the locket looks just like the top of Papillon’s staff). Although Papillon himself does not have a ring when he is transformed, his untransformed self does. And who else has a very similar ring, on the same exact finger? Gabriel Agreste. (He also has white, shimmer nail polish. Very stylish, Papillon; I approve) So, it looks like maybe this guy really is Papillon.

But wait, there’s more!

#3. The No-Lips Profile Pre-transformation, Papillon has no lips, and who else has no lips? Gabriel Agreste. We see the similarities in their profile: that jaw, the nose, the mouth, and the no lips.

#4. The Silhouette In the next scene we get a silhouette of pre-transformation Papillon, and if we compare it to Gabriel’s silhouette, we can also see some similarities: the ears, the line of his face, that brow point, those cheekbones. You get it. So, it really does look like good ol’ Gabby is Papillon.

#6. Never Seen Together There’s also the fact that we hardly see Gabriel at all, and the only time we see him and Papillon is in the Jackady (Simonsayz) episode. And whenever we see Papillon, in the previous scene Gabriel was alone in his office.

#7. The Same Voice Then there’s the fact that they have the same voice actor (at least in the English Version).

And now some evidence for why Gabriel is not Papillon.

#1. His face.

Papillon and Gabriel Agreste do not have the same facial features.

a) The lips. Papillon has lips, Gabriel does not. So unless the transformation comes with lip plumping technology, they are not the same person.

b) The nose. The two seem to have different noses, with Papillon’s being more pointed and Gabriel’s being more rounded.

c) The eyes. Papillon’s eyes sweep upward dramatically; Gabriel’s are less sweepy up, you know?

d) Eyebrows. Papillon has just that one crease, while Gabriel has two.

e) The jawline. Wow, jawlines, just look at them! They look nothing alike. Papillon’s is more square and wide; Gabriel’s is round and narrow.

f) EARS! lol Papillon has no ears! just kidding, well sort of. Where do his ears go? they just squish into his magic mask? and does he even have hair???

#2. In Jackady why would, if Papillon was Gabriel, he let himself get captured by his Akuma guy, if his endgame is to get Ladybug’s and Chat Noir’s Miraculouses? Shouldn’t he have made it more important to get the Miraculouses, and not capture himself? Seems like a dumb thing to do; his whole plan of getting the Miraculouses in that episode was non-existent. He probably should’ve thought things more over if he was Gabriel.

UNLESS! It was just a cover, so that he could say “How could I be Papillon? Why would I capture myself and almost have my Akuma guy kill me?” And then Chat and Ladybug would be like, “hm hm, he has a point.’

#3. If Gabriel was Papillon, why didn’t he just take Chat’s ring when he shakes his hand?

Seems like a pretty easy thing to do, just slip it right off. Then with the power of the ring and his own Miraculous, it’d be pretty easy to take Ladybug’s, especially since she’d be so surprised that Chat was Adrien and that Gabriel was Papillon. One, two, and bam he’d have both their Miraculouses. Sure, they’d know his identity but what would he care with ultimate power? You know?

#4. Two Places At Once?? In the Jackady Episode, we get to see both Papillon and Gabriel on screen in the same episode. Here’s a preview:

In this scene, Gabriel is behind his computer in his office, staring at a beautiful picture of his beautiful wife. Ladybug and Nathalie have just left to get Nino and Adrien, and Chat Noir is giving Gabriel a piece of his mind.

Then we see Papillon in his observatory hideout, having a chat with Jackady. Ladybug thinks Adrien is showering, (what a cute scene!), and Nathalie and Nino are headed toward Gabriel’s office.

Nathalie and Nino make it back, and we see Gabriel again, in the same exact spot where we last saw him. Two different people? Most likely.

#5. And, now this one is maybe a stretch, but when Gabriel see’s that Adrien has a ring on the same hand and finger as Chat, to us, he looks more concerned than anything else.

So either he’s concerned and surprised and startled, because whoa, maybe his son is Char Noir and he’s been fighting him all this time because he’s secretly Papillon, OR he’s concerned because he’s not Papillon but maybe he’s seen this sort of thing before, and he knows what it means. Who knows? I don’t, because I’m not Gabriel Agreste.

#6. Thomas Astruc, the creator of the series, said, somewhere, that Gabriel Agreste is not evil. (My sister found this somewhere, I have no source so you’ll just gonna have to believe me). So, since Gabriel is not evil, and Papillon is obviously evil (?), therefore, they are not the same person. 

#7. His Hideout Papillon’s hideout is somewhere high up, and apparently (according to this pic) far away from the Eiffel Tower. However, the Agreste Mansion is located very close to the Tower. How can Gabriel (if he is Papillon) go from one hideout, miles away, and be back in his office in a split second? Seems kind of fishy to me.  

Here we see the Tower as the little butterfly leaves Papillon; you see it’s far in the distance. However, the Tower is located very close to Agreste Manor.

So, yeah.

#8 Papillon does not wear glasses?

In the silhouette we see in the Origins episode, we see that Papillon does not wear glasses, however Gabriel does. Did Papillon just take them off, does he wear contacts, or does he plain o’ not have any?

#9. The Shoes? We also see that Papillon wears shoes with laces, but unfortunately I couldn’t find a clear picture of Gabriel’s shoes. So I don’t know if his shoes have laces or not. (My sister says that Gabriel’s shoes do not have laces, so who knows)

In Conclusion

There’s good evidence that Gabriel Agreste is Papillon, but there’s also some evidence that he is not.

Only time and more episodes will tell us which is which.
