One thing I haven't seen mentioned about Lae'zel is the way that she is trying. In Act One, she will command you to "speak" when you initiate a conversation. With high enough approval, you can then ask her why she is still rude to you, despite the fact that you've earned her respect. She will then explain that she was raised to know "only blood red and death black" and that she must say what she must be the way she is in order to "endure every wound I must bare".

Lae'zel here is acknowledging the fact that she was raised to fight - in other dialogues with her you can find out that it was expected that the weak would be culled from the ranks by those around them. She was not taught to be anything but the way she is, doesn't know it, she's a soldier and she's strong and that's who she is.

And YET by act 2, if you have high approval with her, she is LEARNING. My girl no longer demands that you "speak" but instead says "speak your mind, I am listening". She is slowly, but surely, bettering herself and trying to treat those around her better. All this while being ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED and quite possibly going against everything she's known and her own god. At a time when you would expect someone to fall back on old trauma responses, when I would certainly understand why she would need to be rude to endure the wounds she is baring she IS ACTIVELY TRYING TO SPEAK TO THE PLAYER CHARACTER NICELY.

I just. Fuck me. I love this woman.
