The Bear isn’t going after awards anymore. It’s the last season and they don’t give a fuck (as well they shouldn’t). Ebon gave an interview recently and spoke about The Bear and talked about how the path to psychological wellness doesn’t make great entertainment. This show is first and foremost about Carmy’s healing journey (read: his journey unlearning white supremacist capitalist patriarchy). And we have years of analysis on here establishing that Claire is antithetical to Carmy’s healing.

They want to see the same kind of storytelling they’re used to where a talented white guy gets to abuse everyone around him and some white woman rolls over for him as the definition of “romance”.

It’s too late for that. The show said Syd is The Bear and that she’s more talented than Carmy is and that he couldn’t force himself to love Claire.

Showing white men escaping from toxic masculinity is actually a great thing at this moment in time and part of that is to stop getting in their own way by getting out of other people’s way and lifting others up.

Syd is one of the most important characters in tv in decades but this is an extremely racist country and entertainment industry who has worked hard to diminish her importance.

I’m also happy for Ayo to get the recognition she deserves on Broadway and be surrounded by support from all corners.

…is the main reason I am so fascinated by this show. Because there is almost ZERO western media that does this or is WILLING to do this - portray the white heartthrob as a fucking mess and both perpetrator and victim of white supremacy - bc folks don’t want to tank and lose their coin.

Storer devoted a whole season (the third one) to paying homage to director William Friedkin who famously made movies that unsettled (let’s be honest, mostly white) audiences bc they turned a mirror on them. Not a coincidence that it was also the season that folks say turned them off the show.

It’s white America* that voted in the current fascist regime and I reckon The Bear might be more important for them to consume than it is for us BIPOC folks.

The same goes for Jimmy who is set up like some gangland mafioso the entire show but when it comes time to open that box/unveil “the mission” he sent Mikey and Richie on, it turns out it’s just a bunch of plastic parts - one literal, disconnected set of cogs in a larger supply chain that Jimmy is capitalising on. Point being, Jimmy - like Mikey - isn’t what he seems. He isn’t some gangster, he’s a middle class businessman running multiple grifts and in this case, using his nephews to circumvent a strike action so he can keep getting paid.
