real writers
one of my most controversial art opinions, but i do not think you need to finish a book to be an author. lots of talk on 'WHEN do you become a REAL writer? 10000 words? 1000 word?' personally i think it takes ZERO words to be a valid writer. john cage would still be a musician if he only wrote 4'33
music is just as much about the notes you dont play as it is the notes you do. writing is just as much about the words you dont use as it is the ones you do. to be a REAL WRITER is a matter of perception not volume. zero words required. you are one when youre ready to be one
i mean this very literally, if someone comes to me and says 'when will i be a valid author? so far i have written no words' it is my opinion that they already are
the funny thing about this is folks get RILED UP sayin things like 'if this is true then a painter would be a painter if they never picked up a brush' or 'an actor would be an actor if they never had a role'. YES that is the point. in art the empty space also has meaning. NOT doing also has a shape
then youll see folks say 'well you are not going to have an audience for your no word book' buckaroo who ever said anything about an audience?' if john cage only wrote 4'33 its very likely nobody would know who he was. it wouldnt be popular. why is POPULARITY the arbiter of 'real' writing to you?
at bare minimum we all have an audience of ONE. yourself. this is still a valid audience. a zero minute and zero seconds film, a movementless dance, a wordless speech. to stand in front of a crowd and say absolutely nothing carries weight too. ABSENCE has artistic power.
thinking about it this way REALLY bothers some people and upsets them. that is okay. we all have our choice in what we accept as 'real' art, and the dichotomy of these beliefs helps us trot forward and prove love
Shout out to the autistic who’s abilities have regressed as they’ve gotten older.
“You didn’t used to be like this when you were a kid.” I know please don’t remind me
"This never bothered you when you were a kid."
Yes it did. I just let it slide because I was taught that I'm "too sensitive" anytime something bothered me. But now I'm finally standing up for myself.
"You never struggled with this when you were a kid."
Yes I did. I just burned myself out in order to do it so I wouldn't be punished. But now I'm accepting myself enough to not force myself to do what I was never meant to do.
"You didn't have these problems when you were younger."
Yes, I did. I just spent my child/teen years with structured institutions like school while not having to worry about whether I had a roof over my head or food to eat and spent my early adult years using up every bit of adrenaline I will ever have to ignore the fact that I've been chronically burnt out my whole life.

i CANNOT express how much more lovable my friends are to me at their most annoying. i'd rather hear the same story 3 times than not at all. i'd rather read a 22 message text rant about something totally inconsequential than not hear from you all day. i'd rather you tag me in the stupidest post i've ever seen than not know that it made you think of a conversation we had a month ago. BE ANNOYING AT ME. I LOVE YOU
Im listening to a podcast ep about AI usage and the guest is saying he completely understands why people refuse to use it out of fear because he shares the same fears, and it's just so weird to me that it's never ever acknowledged that some people don't use it not because they're afraid but because it just holds no appeal. There are things I'm sure learning models are very useful for but none of them have anything to do with me. Yes I'm a bit of a ludite but I completely failed to resist the lure of the phone, or social media, I've never used chatgpt because I have just never wanted to. I feel like the entire debate is instantly reframed once you acknowledge that it's not a necessary service that people either work to resist or avoid out of fear. For most people it's just an online tool, and for me and I know for lots of others too it's just not that important.
It's not that interesting or useful to me, it's holds no appeal, I am resisting nothing. I could already do everything I wanted I don't need a new tool. It really is that simple and I would feel this way even if it wasn't worrying and evil in various ways. We HAVE to resist this narrative that AI is everywhere because people want it, because it's necessary, because it's an improvement, because people can't live without it. AI is everywhere because tech CEOs and investors want to make something from their massive investments. It is incredibly resistable to me. Just don't have an interest in it. This needs to be part of the AI conversation if we have any hope of saving ourselves from the data mining clutches of big tech (AI specifics aside)
