I think people often underestimate the potential educational value of senseless memes. For example, thanks to Spiders Georg, literally every teenager on Tumblr has a reasonable grasp of what a statistical outlier is and the sorts of problems that outliers can introduce into a naïve analysis. There are grown adults who don’t get that - I deal with them on a daily basis.

My cousin is an asst psych professor. Her new boss brought up how male students sometimes challenge female professors. He asked how she handles that: she says ‘hold on: let me take notes’, grabs a pen & paper, and proceeds to take no notes. If he asks why, she says ‘Tell me something I don’t know & I’ll have something to write’; no student has tried twice. Her boss laughed and asked her to mention it at the next staff meeting.

LAUGHING BUT CRYING INSIDE

Every time I watch the siege at Helm’s Deep I get so annoyed. Yes, arm ten-year old boys who can’t see over the battlements or through a helmet, and old men who struggle to lift a sword. Meanwhile you have a cave full of brawny abled bodied adult women who’ve been lifting barrels of mead, wrestling animals on farms, and chopping wood all their lives, relegated to cowering in a cave waiting to be slaughtered.
