There’s something about having Kora and Jiaying in S7 and their roles in Daisy’s final character arc that I am deeply enamoured by. Because as devastating as it is to find out that the mother who couldn’t love you how you had hoped (and only did at a time you’ll never remember) had a daughter before you that she loved like it was second nature, it also contextualizes her relationship with May in a way. She sees Kora, and what a lifetime being loved by Jiaying makes of her, and still, there’s a level of surrender in Daisy. This acceptance that she might never spend a lifetime loved by Jiaying, but that she has spent a near decade being loved by May. And that’s enough for her. Because her story started on the bus, she says so in S1, and despite the oddities and non-linear concepts of growth and family, Daisy has, allegorically, grown up being loved by May. She HAS spent a lifetime being loved. It takes her experiences, her training, the precarity of life throughout, the implicit nature of her relationship with May, everything, and goes: here is how you “grew up’”, unconventional and likely not how Jiaying or Cal had wanted her to, and Daisy, despite the manifestation of everything she could have had standing right in front of her, accepts it. Content and proud, in some ways, of how May loves her.

May spending season 1 so calm and stoic, in total emotional control even when holding a magical staff that makes you uncontrollably angry, losing it when Sky is shot and dying.
